Who's Living In The Present?

This isn't really meant as a criticism, per se, but I wanted to find out who else on TNL is living life in the 21st century. The question is sparked by the fact that I went to the grocery store today to purchase a gallon of milk and every person in front of me at the express line paid by check. Twenty minutes in line for a gallon of milk. (Probably five minutes less than waiting in the regular line would have been.)

So my question is, who is making the most of technology and how are you doing it?

For example, I haven't mailed anything to anyone in over a year. That means I haven't purchased stamps in over a year (have the prices gone up?). Any time I need to correspond with other people, I use my cell phone or the internet or I just plain meet them in person. I pay all of my bills using my bank's free bill pay feature where they mail the payment out for me after I tell them how much to send or the company's online payment site.

I rarely carry cash because I can go to an ATM with my debit card or use it for purchases since it's effectively a Visa card. I don't use checks for anything; haven't done so for about a year and for two years before that I only used them for bills I couldn't pay online.

What about everyone else?

The store has those suggestion cards you can mail to them free of postage so I took a stack of them and I'm going to mail them all with the following on the comments line:

STOP TAKING CHECKS AND EBT IN THE EXPRESS LANE, ASSHOLES!

I wouldn't use checks under normal circumstances, but my bank isn't open on Saturdays and so therefore if I want to apply for a debit card, I have to take off from work. Fuck that, I never do that.

If I use a check, though, I at least have the decency to write everything but the total in while I'm waiting in line.

I've had a debit card since 1994. Anyone that doesn't have one is either lazy or stupid (no offense.) On the flip side, I have never balanced a check book .. so I guess that makes me even worse than people who still use checks everyday.

I refuse to get a cell phone. I hate contracts, hate additional charges, and hate that people can get a hold of me whenever. It's like a social leash. People that have them on thier ears all the time are lonely people who use the phone to quell the voices in thier heads.

So yea, i have issues. But at least i'm not pissing in my sink.

I live in an alternate dimension where I can have just as much fun hanging out and BS'ing with my friends as I can with an iPod or "online bill paying".

P.S. Checks suck

Well, I still use a little of both. My DirectV and ISP bill is directly charged to my CC. The electric bill I can just walk up to the bank and pay it cash. For others, I usually just mail a personal check. When I make expensive purchases, I use either my regular MasterCard or the Check Debit/MasterCard combo card my bank forced their customers to upgrade to.

My main thing is security. I have more protection from fraud with my regular CC, as opposed to the Check Debit Card which gets funds withdrawn directly from my checking account. Otherwise, I'd gladly fully switch to using that for simplicity and to stop having to buy shitty stamps to mail a check to the CC company. But hell, I can't believe anyone sits there in front of a cashier writing a check for groceries. I would think stores wouldn't be very trusting of that practice nowadays. I usually have enough cash for that, but if I come up short, I use my Debit. (Oh, had to give up my cell phone awhile back to save money.)
