More importantly its no longer looking jagged and shimmery as hell as it did at E3, though maybe the recent screens are from the PC version.
Anyone else playing this? Finally got online today, and up to a whopping level 5!! w00t. I hate story mode.
It's out?
Has it been confirmed that Sega's going to charge a monthly fee for this?
I think it's pretty obvious they will. There are rumors that the fees 360 version will be inclusive to XB Live. I'm fairly certain that version won't be out until 2007 though.
If they charge extra, I'm definitely going to pass. I stayed on PSO for 6 months after they started fees, and they didn't offer anything at all. I'm not going to fall for it twice.
You have to be online to do anything network mode related (although I hear if you get your hands on the closed beta version, you can screw around w/ it there -- check pso-world.com).
Overall, it's good, but it's not like PSO in many ways.
-monsters have levels -- there is no normal, hard, vhard, etc. However, the same mission will have 3 difficulty levels (at least for now). A, B, and C. Basically level 20 monsters are 2x as powerful as level 10 monsters. You should count on them taking twice as many hits, giving twice as much damage, etc. Unfortunately, they only give about 30% more experience. :(
-very little equipment dropped at this point. Some basic weapons. No units or def items. Which means...
-meseta is actually worth something
-Any type of character (human, newman, beast, cast) can be any of the 3 job types (hunter, ranger, force). You can switch jobs in the game as well.
-Only force's can use "techs" but...
-All characters can use photon arts, which are essentially techs that you attach to a weaopn. Thus far, all photon arts are for attacking only... no healing or support. Likely, there won't be.
The final thing that kind of sucks is that the network protocol does not seem to be very effecient. I'm in Hawaii, and it lags pretty bad at times. Admittedly there are tons of network issues, but this is in down times, playing alone. I played PSO:BB both in Japan and Hawaii, and as long as I wasn't simultaneously torrenting some porn, the lag was virtually unnoticeable.
Hopefully it'll come with an initial free month or two. Xbox PSO was good for about that length of time; by the end of two months it was completely busted.
Plus, this on has a 40 hour single player game, so hopefully it's worth getting even if you don't play online.
I'm looking at your avatar and knowing you're going to buy this regardless.
Got BB now, and have this pre-ordered with next day air shipping. Can't wait.
wait, casts can be forces????heresy!!!!!!!!!
1.are there still traps?
2.how many worlds are there online?
3.if any race can be any class, what are the comparative advantages of the races. i recall humans were balanced, casts were stronger, and newms were mages, im assuming beasts are more accurate, just for class spiking balance
4.does your helper robot travel with you like a mag still, or is it only in your room till you get it to the point that it looks like a small cast?
5.are weapon combos still just hard and light swings, with the same animations but faster or slower, or do the combos actually branch with different animations now.
6.how useful are the vehicles? im assuming they mena that the world areas are a lot bigger
7.do shields and armor show now? or do you still look the same forever.
8.and, i know im going to get called a furry, so a pre-emptive fuck you to all of you, but what all can you customize on beasts, do they have things like claws, tails and fangs? in a realated story, how csutomizeable are your characters now, is it still just head, body, and the x/y axis shifting for build or are there a lot more segments to customize. fianlly are there a lot of customization options for casts? sorry but city of heroes has spoiled me, and i want to have a good bit of control over my appearence.
I didn't think they could be either until I got into a room last night, and this donut cast was walking around w/ a cane casting Resta. :/Quote:
wait, casts can be forces????heresy!!!!!!!!!
Yes, although I don't think you get them by default... you buy them in the shop.Quote:
1.are there still traps?
3 planets (only 2 open right now), plus the Guardians Colony space station which can have missions. Each planet has a few different areas to explore. There might be more space stations down the road, but who knows.Quote:
2.how many worlds are there online?
Sounds about right. Humans are the most balanced. Newmans have the most MST. Casts are the strongest. Beasts are somewhere there w/ casts I think. As a bonus, Casts have something called a Nanoblast, which is most comparable to a Photon Blast (with a MUCH cooler motion, which happens real time -- no longer stops everything). Beasts have something, the name of which has escaped me, where they turn into a giant... uh... beast, and kick the shit out of everything.Quote:
3.if any race can be any class, what are the comparative advantages of the races. i recall humans were balanced, casts were stronger, and newms were mages, im assuming beasts are more accurate, just for class spiking balance
At the moment, no, but apparently they do later. Right now, they just hang out in your room and hold items for you. I've been trying to evolve mine, but I've given it a ton of shit and haven't even evolved one of it's 4 attributes yet. You can feed it all day long, but it's not like items are super abundant right now. Also, it's hard to get into your room at the moment, due to some network bullshit. In fact, your lucky if the game doesn't freeze on you if you try to go there now. Hopefully it'll be fixed by the end of the month.Quote:
4.does your helper robot travel with you like a mag still, or is it only in your room till you get it to the point that it looks like a small cast?
Oh, yeah -- you name your Partner Machinery as well.
There are now only attacks, and attack w/ photon arts. There's no light and hard swing. Photon arts are bought in disc form like techs. You use them, then "link" them to a weapon. They get stronger with use. Each one starts off having 1 combo. At level 11, it will gain another combo. Presumably more at levels 21 and 31 (just a hunch). Each time you combo your photon art, it takes X amount of PP off of the weapon. The weapon will autmotically recharge if you have it equipped, but rather slowly. Mind you, one swing is in the area of 15 PP, so right now, my level 13 ones take up 30 PP if I do a full combo. The 2nd part of the combo does about double damage though, so it's very worth it.Quote:
5.are weapon combos still just hard and light swings, with the same animations but faster or slower, or do the combos actually branch with different animations now.
One last thing - unless you want to wait around all day for your weapons to autmotically charge, you can pay to have them charged in any of the towns, or sometimes during the stages. Completing a mission or even logging off and back on will not replenish your PP.
None online yet, and I've only played 3 chapters offline. Offline is pretty weak if you ask me. It's like playing online w/ some really gay characters and story.Quote:
6.how useful are the vehicles? im assuming they mena that the world areas are a lot bigger
Not sure yet. Too early. Although there are no shields AFAIK. Only armor. Each armor can have 4 slots, but not just general slots. It can have a head, body, arm, or extra slot. Only certain units can go in certain slots. No more God/Ability x3.Quote:
7.do shields and armor show now? or do you still look the same forever.
I've only made a human and newman (not even played the newman yet). It's much more customizeable than PSO. You can alter:Quote:
8.and, i know im going to get called a furry, so a pre-emptive fuck you to all of you, but what all can you customize on beasts, do they have things like claws, tails and fangs? in a realated story, how csutomizeable are your characters now, is it still just head, body, and the x/y axis shifting for build or are there a lot more segments to customize. fianlly are there a lot of customization options for casts? sorry but city of heroes has spoiled me, and i want to have a good bit of control over my appearence.
head
face
eyes
eyebrows
lashes
ears
body height
body width
upper body clothes
pants
footwear
Doesn't seem you can change hair color right off, but I believe for a fee (1000 meseta?) you can go to an aesthetic salon and have it changed. You can buy clothes (some cheap, some very pricey) in clothing shops as well. You can change clothes in these shops any time, assuming you have them. You can even get down to your underwear and fight that way, although it's more like a gym suit, so too bad for all you horny fucks.
This thread makes me sad.
Well, it is. I just think the:Quote:
That's a shame. They made a big deal about how it was supposed to be a fully featured singled player game.
-characters are flat
-story and all it's elements are horribly cliche'd
-fluff between the action parts is too long
-point of the game is to pimp out your own character, so why bother with offline?
Yes, just with some "story" thrown in there.Quote:
So it's exactly like online then.
ok thanks for the info. that was what i wanted to know.
How are the aircraft? Are the vehicles integrated into the online game at all?
Online, the aircraft are used to go from planet to planet. There's an animation which you can skip. Other than that, no vehicles online (yet).
Apparently later, there are super classes, where you can get abilities from more than one class (hunter + ranger, ranger + force, etc.). I assume they'd be leaving the casts high and dry if they couldn't participate fully in that system. Just a hunch.
Well, this should hopefully be out in the next month and a half or so in America. Last I heard the PS2 and PC versions share a server and the Xbox 360 is on it's own seperate server. Is this still "the final word?"
Also, which version of this are most of you getting? I'm on the fence between all three versions, although leaning more towards one of the consoles since I'd rather play on there.
So, so true. :p
If I buy it, it will be the 360 version (achievements FTW).
I had a hunch that the single-player game wasn't a deep RPG experience like some people made it out to be. This isn't going to be like any of the original PS games in that aspect at all, and it'd be dumb to expect such. The whole shtick with the series now is the online play, and the offline mode comes off more like a "here, are you happy? Now STFU" by Sega than anything else.
I sincerely, sincerely hope I'm wrong about that, though.
I like what I'm hearing so far, at least is isn't another Diablo 3D clone.
Just what the heck is it with sega on being so simple minded? Last time, they hacked out a good portion of the single player experiance that the jap version had and they have no problem making this one stand along with it in the same manner. This isn't exactly a full investment, but if the game supports offline-play, it better mother-fucking support it.
Does the PS2 version of this benefit from the HDD at all? I too am torn as to which version to get.
I heard it does and it's servers are compatable with PC users.
No HDD support. Apparently the PS2 version sports some slowdown as well. The only thing I can imagine the 360 offering over the PC version is 16:9
Which version of PSU are you playing, GaijinPunch?
I've heard that the 360 version has slow down at different times.
My thoughts are that the game was designed with the PS2 in mind so it's probably going to be more optimized for the PS2. Most of the people I know in real life are also getting either the PC or the PS2 version, so I think that is where I'm going to go as well.
I'm playing the PS2. No way I could play it on the PS2 after playing PSO:BB (on the PC). I'm pretty happy with it, although I've got a middle-line card (I think -- ATI x700 or something) and I've got to put it on medium settings. I might blow the money and get a high end one, but not sure. I should save the money for whores probably.Quote:
Which version of PSU are you playing, GaijinPunch?
This sounds absolutely god aweful.
If they're making this another fake MMORPG, october is gonna be much easier on my wallet.
Honestly, everyone even considering picking this up should buy Guild Wars Nightfall instead. There is zero chance this will be a more polished game than that.
That what you're playing nowadays Yoshi-Kun?
Nah. That one isn't out until 10/26. Honestly, the only thing I am playing online these days is TNL Bitchfest 06.
well yoshi, i do plan on picking that up too, but heres the thing. I want a good sci-fi themed game, like star wars galaxies used to be. guild wars is nice but honestly its the same medevil stuff we got before, and if you really like playing pve, then again guild wars can accomidate you, but only as an afterthought, its pretty much a diversion to set you up for pvp. so while i have pondered the redundency of buying both games in october( and its worse for me, since city of heroes/villians is getting its next issue then and adding a lot of stuff heroside that i have been begging for), they really serve different purposes(besides, whens the last time you actually logged into guild wars:P )
How excatly does Guild Wars play, anyway?
On a PSU note, I've heard "rumors" that the 360 version is on it's own server because 360 users don't have to pay monthly fees to play. I don't know how much I believe this yet, but it would explain alot.
More direct/indirect with the style of Diablo or Dungeon Seige and I like it that way. Only problem, I don't have a way of controlling my NPC's in battle, but they do well enough to do thier job anyway.
I hope MS doesn't allow that double-fee crap they pulled when PSO was given it's own servers. If sega wants money that badly, they should leave access for silver and allow them to work from things indepentent of live cause it's too restrictive when it comes to playing multi-platform.
re: 360 rumors:
Last I read, there will be a $10 fee to play on the 360. Don't take that as the gospel though. I don't keep up w/ 360 news in the least. The SuperGrafx has more games I'm interested in.
re: PSU instead of something else, and it being a fake MMORPG. I don't think Sega's plan was to ever make it like other MMORPGs, or one at all. The franchise has always kind of been on it's own in a weird, addicting way. Sure, it has it's problems, but fuck -- in this day and age of morons that buy any bullshit with blood, I'm quite happy w/ PSO/U, even with it's plethora of issues.
Um, no. It's always been Diablo in 3d. It works exactly like Diablo online except they added lobbies where you can run around with your charater instead of chatrooms. I'm sure someone will argue that this somehow makes PSO unique but how the actual game itself works is obviously bitten.
re: monthly cost, whats the cost for the pc version? any idea?
If that makes you feel better, okay then.Quote:
It's always been Diablo in 3d.
Can you name more than 3 games out in the last 5 years that are not like anything else?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Free DL off the marketplace? I'm there.
I'm down like Charlie Brown.
We need to get a TNL group together Wednesday evening.
$9.99 a month. all systems.
Pray that they learned from the mistakes for the JP release.
Just to be more concise about it:
October 24 will see the long-awaited release of Phantasy Star Universe, the online (and offline) RPG sequel to the immensely popular Phantasy Star Online.
Today Sega revealed the price for gamers to get online.
Beginning October 24, players can purchase via the Sega website a Guardians License for $10. PS2 and PC users can also purchase a bundle license that will cost $50 for 6 months.
Owners of an Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Gold account can partake in a free, downloadable multiplayer open beta version of the game, beginning October 11 and ending on October 18.
PSU will retail for $49.99 for the PC and PS2 and $59.99 for the Xbox 360.
Source: IGN
360 owners get hosed. $10 extra from the get-go, and $10 a month on top of live.
Dubya tee eff, Sega.
We'll see how the beta goes, but it'll have to be really good to get me on board that rape trolley.
I guess I'll play the shit out of it for a week, and then I'm done. No fucking way am I going to pay the extra $10 because it's on 360 plus a monthly fee, not after the shitjob Sega did with PSO's online content.
Fuck you Sega.
Voice chat is worth the ten dollars.
WE NEED DRAGONZORD POWAH!
Very soon, Xbox Live Gold members will be able to download the Phantasy Star Universe beta. Earlier today, Sega announced that the open beta would begin tomorrow, be available to download for until Thursday, and be playable until next Wednesday (October 18). However, that has since been changed to "very soon" with a note from a site admin that the beta will be available "in the coming days."
Sega "highly recommends" that players who join the beta tinker with the plethora of customization options. Not only do they promise fun, but it also helps them work out the kinks ahead of time. Featured in the beta will be three planets (Parum, Neudaiz, and Moatoob), three classes (Hunter, Ranger, and Force), and an unfurnished personal space aptly dubbed "My Room."
We'll let you know when the official date is finalized. Phantasy Star Universe for Xbox 360 will land on store shelves October 24 (meaning any bugs you find will likely require a day-of-purchase online update).
lol very soon. The beta will run from Midnight October 17th to 8am October 18th and will cost 400 ms points.
<3
So don't buy it. Never understood why people continually support something financially that they moan about.Quote:
Fuck you Sega.
Anyways, for those that care, Sega's doing a much better job this time. They're time-releasing quite a bit of content. Be warned though, that the Japanese launch was quite iffy. Released on Thursday, and the servers were down the entire weekend. When they were back up, all data was rolled back. Bottlenecks galore, and all sorts of other shit. The problems were the result of basically too many people buying the fucking game, which kind of makes me laugh.
So has Sega learned their lesson? Sort of. They've fixed a lot of stuff that was wrong w/ PSO, but are making some new errors too.
Next time I'll try to make it more absurd...
However, Yoshi's assumption is not unfounded, this is SEGA.
I haven't bought a Sega game in about a year. I "continually supported" PSO in the hopes that, you know, they'd actually offer something to justify the monthly fee. They fucked up, so I'm not about to offer a free pass on this one. As someone here said earlier, even DOOM offers free four-player online.
If they deliver on this, then it will be worth, it, which wasn't the case with PSO.Quote:

I hope you're right, but then again, this is Sega.Quote:

10 bucks more retail for a game that shows little graophical edge over the other versions?
Personally the online doesn't excite me at all. I'm hoping PSU has a "epic" first player like the genesis games did. Online will just be a pick up and play thing.
I'm not home now, so I'm asking has the beta hit Xbox Live yet?
It's an Xbox 360 game - if it is worth it or not, it's going to be $10 more. It's not like PSU is the only game doing this crap.
If you're going to be looking to this game mainly for the single player (no idea why, but hey, whatever), be ready to be disappointed. This isn't going to be the "epic" PS single player games of old, it's going to be "a much better version of single player compared to PSO."Quote:
Personally the online doesn't excite me at all. I'm hoping PSU has a "epic" first player like the genesis games did. Online will just be a pick up and play thing.
Why the hell do you keep making a big deal out of the "two subscriptions" thing? How many people with a 360 don't have xbox live gold? And more importantly, how many of those people would be interested in this game at all?
Becasue Sega is raping people by charging $10 a month for a game that should be free.
That's not his point. His point is that people keep saying "Well you pay for Live and now you have to pay for this so you get screwed twice!"..but everyone here was paying for Live for other reasons. No one is going to pay for Live just because of this game, so no one is getting screwed twice.
Okay, fine, people are only getting screwed once. Go Sega.
there you go ;p
so, any news of wether the pc is having an open beta too?
360 beta, according to some Sega rep over on their message boards, has been moved to this weekend. Still only available for download for two days, still only open until the 18th. So, at BEST, 4-5 days total playtime available.
Way to go Sega.
How much will you pay me if I save you the time by telling you right now how bad it sucks?Quote:

Beta: Phantasy Star Universe

Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan.
Details from the dashboard:: Thank you for downloading the trial version of Phantasy Star Universe online multiplayer mode. This is a limited time demo which will grant you a temporary GUARDIANS License, which will expire at 12:00AM on Wednesday October 18th (* adjusted for local time). You are required to have a Xbox Live Gold Membership in order to play this demo. Also due to the test nature of this demo, there will be a limited number of concurrent users who will be allowed to play at any given time. For specific dates and restrictions please check out our website at www.phantasystaruniverse.com.
God I've lost almost all interest in this game at this point.
This game fucking sucks. It's needlessly difficult to even join up with people (you can teleport people to your room but you can't form a party in there -- wtf?) And trying to find someone in-game is nigh impossible. Korly and I tried for fifteen minutes to join a party together and we just could not find each other, even though we were in the same lobby on the same server.
Someone really should fire Sonic Team from a cannon at this point, they've been useless for years.
Dipstick has put in the last point, definately not ever gonna get this game.
My interest in this game went from "I never played PSO so I'll get this." to "What else can I spend $60 on?".
Wow... that's exactly NOT what I want to hear.
Come on Sega... don't screw around on me. I just a few days ago installed the trial version of WoW, expecting to have a bit of fun with it and then have my time taken up by PSU. If you aren't careful, I'll just stay over on that side of the fence.
I feel somewhat retarded about the party function. To invite someone to your party, it's just Party -> Form Party -> Pick person from your cardlist. However, you have to have their card to do that, and they have to be on the same server. Good luck finding them in game, though. (at least you can then invite them to your room through XBL and then give them your card in your room).
Don't scare me like that you jerk!
lawl I guess I'll skip the beta. It's like the Keystone Cops over there
Its great to see that Sega got the Dreamcast emulated on the 360. The demo is just more of the same as the last 2 PSOs.
