Prey

I doubt too many people remember ogling screens of this game back when it was supposed to be a Quake 1 killer in 1996. A few more people might remember its second incarnation, which was canned in 1999, revived, and then canned again in 2001. Well apparently 3D Realms has decided to have yet another crack at this thing. Now they're teaming with human head, and using an upgraded Doom 3 engine, shooting for a 2006 release, 10 years after the game was originally scheduled for release.

Does anyone have any screens of the original incarnation? I think they were on the Duke Nukem Atomic Edition disc or something. Maybe it was even on the first Duke 3D disc. I doubt that game has anything in common with this current incarnation at all, but it would be interesting to see.

Yea, I saw the pictures of this game in the new PC Gamer. It looks okay, like a flashier Doom 3 (there wasnt much of the Indian influence theyre hyping though). The original pics... eh they were a lot like Quake. I dont even think they showed off the portal technology (the shit they were hyping as the second coming... of course, its not, but its in the new game).

I would love to see a game using the Doom 3 engine that DOESN'T look like Doom 3. Prey and Quake 4 look nice and all but if they didn't have names anyone could see those are new expansion packs for Doom 3 (especially Quake 4).

I'm sure that engine is capable of making different types of environment and we'll see different stuff later on.

Diff is right though about the lack of Native American influence. I thought the whole thing was about some Indian folklore stuff with some futuristic stuff thrown in. Maybe I'm thinking too much about Turok (shudder) and expect bow and arrows..etc.

It's actually pretty ill suited to well lit, or outdoor environments. The lighting technology is so complex and demanding it's pretty much limited to dark corridors.

Human Head Studios doesn't seem like a good developer choice(Rune kind of sucked and I hear Dead Man's Hand does too).

Wasn't the original concept of the game almost like a survival horror title? I thought it was supposed to be more like a hunt instead of an all out action title. I thought the idea of facing off against one strong, intelligent enemy per level instead of a ton of drones was slick, but the new interview seems to suggest a new direction.

It will either get canned again, or come out and be a huge flop, so there's really no point in paying attention. It's not going to be anything special, as I didn't even care about it back in '96.

Side note, I liked Rune, but Dead Man's Head DOES suck.

God damn, they might actually have something. Watching this video I can see they have alot of really original gameplay ideas at work. Disorienting as hell though.
