There are many styles of games that could be played with just the remotes dpad and buttons, and not use the motion sensors at all, and to be honest, I'm glad there are so few buttons.
I hate how most modern games force you to use 8+ buttons when, with a little thought and ingenuity, they could be controlled with just 3 or 4.
There are no limitations on the Revolution's controller, it works exactly like the standard controllers of today in addition to all its new bells and whistles. That's what the "shell" thing they keep going on about is for.
It's also still early to go on about software, which is why Nintendo's been hyping the controller. This time last year we had very little on 360 stuff, and right now there's not a lot out there on PS3 games either.
Basically, Nintendo has one big thing setting them apart from the competition, and they're hyping it for all it's worth. The reason I'm cutting them a break is because I thought the DS touch-screen was a gimmick, but it's turned out to be a really nice control tool in the games that used it well, especially Meteos and Trauma Center. Their success with the DS has earned them, from me, a shot at the Revolution.
Besides, everyone who's actually played with the wand has claimed to had a blast. I can look at it and dismiss it or I can listen to those who've used it. Until E3, when I can play it myself (assuming I want to wait in lines that long) I'll listen to people with direct hands-on experience.

I wonder if that "shell" for a normal controller is going to come with the system. With all the extra shit you'll be able to get for thing I wonder which company will make the Revolution Accesory Storage Cubby Hole first.
IAWTP. Nintendo's right about the fight over graphics, but there was a similar fight over buttons. It was one button on the 2600, two on the NES and SMS, three on the Genny (then six for SF2), six on the SNES, etc. A d-pad and two buttons would be sufficient for most games. Just look at vibration. The "vibrate" function is a relatively small additional feature that was just a good idea. The amount it augmented immersiveness in games can't really be understated.
So the Revolution isn't a truly "Revolutionary" form of control, I think it'll wind up sort of like the vibration thing in the long run. It will make for a more immersive experience, and that's always good.
If some truly unique gameplay ideas come out of it (here's hoping) then even better. The DS has already proven that a break from "standard" control can make for a uniquely satisfying experience you can't get elsewhere. Twin sticks are getting boring.
Well Katamari would be possible with only two analog sticks. I bet this katamari developer would agree with that statement (the d-pad/two button) say, 7 years ago. "You don't need fancy sticks, man. You just need to be unique in your software design!" That guy is an idiot. Newer control styles have made a host of new gameplay experiences possible.Quote:

Some games make good use of all of the buttons on standard controllers, there's no doubt about that, but many games just use every button for the sake of using every button.
A lot of developers are just lazy, too.
If the player character can do 5 different things, they just map them to five different buttons, even if some of those things can only be done under certain circumstances, or aren't done often enough to justify a dedicated button.
I don't need a seperate button to pick things up in a beatemup, for example. I can just press punch, or even punch+jump.

Saying that games would work better with only 2 buttons may be true for a lot of games out there, but if you wanted to play a FPS where thats all you have to input, well that would just plain suck. In that regard I have to ask what kind of storage is used for the Virtual Console? Surely the game can't be gone when the system is turned off.
$5 for an NES game sounds good to me. It'll take something major to make me go over that amount, though.

well if you looked through this thread or any website that has info on the Wii you would see that it has 512 megs of flash memory built in to store things like a VC game or your game saves. The system also has SD card ports so you can buy a nice 1 or 2 gig SD card to save VC games or game saves to. The system also has 2 USB 2.0 ports on it which in theory should mean it can support external hard drives but theres no official word from Nintendo on that.Quote:

I hope they allow you to connect the Wii with a regular wired router. I don't want to go through the horseshit of setting up a wireless network.
Has anything been reported about the Wii being able to wirelessly synch with other Wiis for lan play ala the DS? Be nice if you could have Wii multiplayer without having to use a router at all.

That would be slick but nobody is going to spend $250 to play DS games online when a $50 PC adapter will do. It's not a selling point, but it is the sort of inspired thinking that Nintendo has not been doing since about 1995.
Thought I read on Wiki that the Wii will be used as a DL station for demos for the DS, but won't enable you to play games online with the DS.

True, the PS3 will be hyped to the heavens, but you're neglecting supply and its effects. Current estimations say that the PS3 supply will make the 360 launch look like a product bonanza. Also, Nintendo has traditionally owned the Christmas season for years. Combine those two and I don't see the Wii having a bad holiday at all, no matter when it launches.
