Here's my problem. I installed TIE Fighter on my PC (the Win98-compatible rerelease) and when I try to run it, it asks if I want to install DirectX 5.2. I already have 9.0 installed. When I tell it "no", the launcher closes.
How can I get around this? Or, can I safely tell it "yes" without fear of it installing 5.2 in place of 9.0?
I hope someone can answer this for you. I've been thinking about picking up the game as well.
If there isn't any known workaround for this that someone can provide you, send me the exe. I can kill a few minutes to have a look at it for you. It might be as simple as it checking the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectX\Version" registry key and wanting the value for DirectX 5.2 only. So a possible workaround would involve saving the existing key in a reg file, making another reg file that sets the key to 5.2 before you wanna play the game. Then you would merge back the old key file to restore the correct version value when you're done playing. Anyway, I'd have to examine to the exe to know for sure if that would work.
(I assume you already checked whatever support site the company that made this has for patches or for a troubleshooting guide.)

I got both Xwing and Tie Fighter for DOS, and never had a machine they would run on.
I believe the Tie-Fighter CD that came with Lucasarts Archive volume 2 works in Windows, I'll have to try it out. It might no longer work in XP, which is sadness.Quote:

Well, I found their support page that had some patches, but nothing related to this (If that's even the right site & game. Is it?). Attach or pm me the exe if you want and I'll take a look at it in my leisurely if you find no other workaround. Before that though, I would go ahead and hit yes to see what it does. It's not likely to do this silently. Might just to try to launch the MS DirectX setup exe for this which you could cancel afterwards.Quote:

DirectX is backwardly compatible. If you try to install an older version the DX installer wont overwrite the newer files. You cant really uninstall or roll back DirectX. I say just go with the installer.
