The "What's Coming Out For PSP?" Thread

Games worth mentioning, listed as coming out by the end of 2005:

....and that's it. There's also a bunch of movies that all cost twice as much as the dvd versions. I think there are like two things on there I'd even consider buying. Please tell me there's more, that there's tons of awesome things in the pipeline in Japan I don't know about. Because I like the hardware, but right now if I'd dropped the $ on a PSP I'd find that list kind of appalling.

I'm so glad i resisted the temptation. Just three days ago i saw some at Target but i'm over it already. Getting through the first 2 weeks without blowing the cash was the hard part.

Check out the actual gameplay footage they have on Gamespot - not the edited trailer. It looks dark, framey and the visuals are hyper-1997. These are the only games that would interest me if I had a PSP. I would buy the GTA. But why not just wait for Burnout 4? And Viewtiful Joe is being whored out too frequently by Capcom right now. There was no need for a second one, but atleast this one is portable. Still, nobody needs or should want that much Joe.

What? Most new DVD's north of the boarder are over 20 bucks. Still, they're usually under 25 so what's the incentive to buy the UMD over the DVD? You'll probably get more use out of a DVD.

I'm just going by what's listed on EB's website. But I don't think something being on sale somewhere changes the price - I mean, nobody talks about PS2 games only costing $5 even though you can get them at Circuit City for that. A $20 price doesn't justify the scaled down nature of the product either.

Some other interesting games with no specified release date:

Tenchi No Mon looks like your above average Japanese action rpg. It may also be the same game as Tenken Chimon, and Ten no Kaji, Chi no mo. The listings are unclear, and the video for Tenchi looks alot like an earlier build of Tenken. It moves pretty fast -

And in the "one day we'll probably make games in these series so we'll throw the name out there 3 years before the games' actual release" file: Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, which is an action rpg starring some character you never heard of on which production may or may not have started. It is not to be confused with Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, which is the PSP CG movie.

I'm expecting (hoping) for a lot of PSP stuff to be shown at TGS. The reason PSP's lineup seems so weak is that there are tons of titles announced, yet there is no media and/or very little information released for them, like Devil May Cry, GT Mobile, FFVII: Crisis Core, etc. Other titles you missed that do have info/media available:

Pursuit Force (One of the few really original titles that looks very promising)
Infected (Dawn of the Dead-style action game from Planet Moon)
Tales of Eternia (PS1 port, but it looks great. Should be out here some time this year)
Ape Escape Academy (Wario Ware-style game in Ape Escape universe. Apparently the import was quite good)
Taiko no Tetsujin
Virtua Tennis (Sure, it's Virtua Tennis on PSP. But fuck, it's Virtua Tennis on PSP)
Medievil (I think it's a remake compilation of the first two titles)
Namco Museum (I normally wouldn't include something like this, but this seems to be one of the best, if not the best retro comp ever)
Popolocrois (JRPG, first time the series has come to US)
Con (Original game from Sony, might be interesting)
GripShift (Looks like shit to me, but it's an original title from Sony, that may turn out to be.. something)

Coded Arms (6/23 Asian)- FPS from Konami.
Star Soldier (7/28 Japan) JPN - A tad iffy, since this is a portable version of GameCube Star Soldier with a higher $50 price. It will have an Internet Ranking mode. Don't go with Lik-Sang here, since their price is $60.

Popolocrois, Infected, Death Jr. Probably GTA too, but that's about it unelss there are a lot of surprises in the works. I'll also import Songoku Cannon if nobody brings it here, but with the complete drought of titles I'd be shocked if anything remained Japan-only.

Gamespot has a couple of movies up. The trailer was pretty uninspiring, but the actual gameplay footage looks better.

It's the reverse of Coded Arms, where the trailer looked like scaled down Halo, but the gameplay video is alot more Duke Nukem 64.

Infected has a very interesting concept, at the least. You can play online and infect other players with your character, stats, etc. making it so they have to deal with you on their one-player campaign. So idealistically people would play other people to get bragging rights and spread their avatar all over other PSPs.

Neast ideas mean nothing though if the game plays bad. So I've got my fingers crossed.

I dont know why anyone is surprised we have no info on GT for PSP. They fucking showed GT3 (as GT2000), in early 1999 I think but that shit didnt come out until 6 months after the system launched. Expect GT PSP around Christmas.

Apparently a Breath of Fire 3 remake and a Mega Man Dash (Legends) game are coming to the PSP.

Most of you probably won't care, but I'm definitely picking up both, if this is true. I adored the original MM Legends, so even if it's an upgraded port of the original it's a must buy to me, and I like the BoF series a lot.

Walmart is listing Katamari Damacy for PSP as well, though I'm sure we all can agree that Walmart is the golden standard for breaking videogame news.

I'm good with the Popolocrois remake coming up from Agetec. It's all new to me, having never gotten to play it before. :)

I'll pass on BoF3, though. I played it all the way through but just didn't like it that much, finding it kind of dull. If they do BoF4, however, I'm all over it. I never got around to playing it and it looks substantially better than 3.

Same for Megaman Legends, actually, but only because I'm really waiting for Tronne Bonne. I think that's one of the few remaining PS1 games I regret never getting around to playing.

I don't know about all the games talked about so far. The only games I want are games I'd rather play on a console anyway. Like, why the hell would I wanna play SSX or Ark of Nap on portable? Maybe if Metal Gear Acid were a real Metal Gear game...

Heck yes we need some new, unique games. I want that konami RPG (is that Rockman in one of the pics?) and here's hoping NA also gets Tokobot.

After all the lukewarm-poor reviews I decided to skip Coded Arms and am getting Kirby DS today, glad I own both systems.

I afforded one, but I still don't play it, even with the homebrew stuff. But that's mostly because I don't have any place I need to use it at besides on long trips. I'm not complaining though, because the next car trip or flight I go on, my PSP will be in my hands ready to play, and just for that I know it was worth the purchase.

BoFIII? I'd rather BoFIV, which has a better battle system, more interesting characters, and less children, but whatever.

Man, the 2d is just godly on the PSP. The more 2d goodness the better. Now I just hope this is good (it was developed by Falcom, and not Bandai, thankfully, which is a good sign).

True that. If PSP was a 2D devoted system, I'd buy one in a heartbeat. If Konami developed a 2D Castlevania for the system, I'd probably have to buy it. This and Twelve both look great, visually.

Whatever. The fact that Sony is actually allowing developers to do 2D games freely on the PSP is nice to know (and what's been seen so far looks great), and Falcom developing on a current-generation system (unedited, the PS2 Ys game doesn't count) is... odd.

Why was not any of this announced at E3? Did it get all lost in the face of other happenings? (Except there wasn't anything happening!)

Quit being a prick. 2D is appealing anywhere because it's not common and typically delivers gameplay that's different from 3D games. The GBA has had some amazing 2D games that play differently than anything on consoles. Neither 2D nor 3D is inherently better than the other (though they fit certain genres better), but it's nice to have a source of 2D games.

I will say that I prefer 2D graphics to 3D (for characters especially).

The 2D games Ive played on GBA have not been as good as the 2D games from the 16-bit era. I think nowadays 2D primarily sells on novelty, and people are willing to accept lesser games because its 2D.
