I recently had a discussion with friends about how much we should tip or whether or not one should tip at all given the situation. So, how much do you usually tip a waiter/waitress? Or do you never tip? Personally, I'm not a fan of tipping, for a couple of reasons, but I do it anyway.

And here's one that I never really thought about, but after reading this site I've changed my opinion on tipping pizza delivery boys, I think they actually deserve it, moreso than a waiter/waitress.

I hate when people don't tip at a sit down restaurant.

Tipping is a signifigant amount of income for waiters and waitresses. My tip is dependent upon:

a) How much money I've actually got, and have got to spare. I know they need the money but if I need it more I'll leave a small tip and apologize.

b) The actual service. Terrible service does not deserve a tip in any situation. The tips are their payment, but if they don't do their jobs I don't pay them. That's that. It's rare that I leave no tip at all, but since tips are the primary source of income I don't think a shitty server should be automatically rewarded by some semi-arbitrary system.

No tips are like when I have to go to the kitchen to ask for my food, and when I get there the orders are all wrong, and they never come back to check on us.

As a personal observation, I tend to tip more to people who are friendly. I sort of try to engage the servers in light conversation and I tend to get better service that way. Making a dumb joke and getting them laughing or smiling is just better for everyone, I think, especially since I'm likely to tip more if I'm in a good mood myself. I understand waiters have shitty days and a bad attitude doesn't usually garner a bad tip unless they're really rude. Only bad service does.

I don't treat the servers like they're tools, I treat them like people. I see a lot of people come in and demand their shit laundered and jerk around the waiters and just be rude to them, and that's not right. If I need special service I am patient and polite about asking for it. If I get a wrong dish I don't browbeat the server. That shit's unnecessary.

A is the most important thing though. I'm pretty generous when I've got money to spare, which isn't often, but I try to meet the standard if the service was standard.

i never know if i should tip at a buffet. especially a chinese buffet. sure they bring you drinks......but thats it. you get the food yourself.

That's a good question...are the wages different for employees at dedicated buffet style restaurants? I'm pretty sure I've never left a tip at one..unless I had to ask the server to go out of their way for something.

Its not customary to tip in Australia, so any amount is appreciated, and no tip usually isn't a problem.

Me and my family are good tippers if it is worth it. As fair as pizza guys and the such go I generally give a buck whatever. More if they are very quick or it is a large order. Less if it takes fucking forever. I think those guys deserve their tips, but not as much as a waiter/whatever. Its a single transaction that does not require nearly as much as a sit-down situation.

Some states have a law that waiters and watresses get paid less per hour than the states Minimum Hourly Wage because they get tips. And I don't live in one of those states, so they get like 7.10 an hour plus tips, unlike neighboring Wisconsin where they get like 3.00 plus tips because they have the law intact.

But I pay based on how good the server was, if they suck they don't get a tip. If they do what they are supposed to do I just kind of rough out a 15%-20% tip I guess.

i tip all the time, and over tip friendly waiters and pizza delivery guys, i have friends who do those gigs and I dont wanna be a jerkstore. Plus pizza dudes/chicks are usually pretty cool people and I've never had a service problem with them.

I've had some dickheads before. One time we ordered from pizza hut (what the fuck were we thinking) and my mom didn't have any cash on her so I paid. I only tipped the guy a buck. He fucking calls my parents up and said that I didn't tip him. My mom asks him why the fuck does she care. He says "well, some kids keep the money for themselves". My mom precedes to bitch his ass out and we get lots of free pizza. In the spring once the snow melted we found that dollar. Dumbass dropped it.

Tipping is out of control. The pizza guy gets a tip from me if he drives through a F5 tornado and still gets to my house on time. Pizza is already a rip-off, and then they charge you for gas but don't tell you.

You know what fucking sucks? Gratuity charges.

You get shit service and you're still forced to tip.

Yeah, they do suck. My aunt used to be a waitress and now has quite a lot of money. There has been numerous times where we have gone out to eat at VERY nice places and had wonderful service but they threw on the gratuity charge and it was actually less than what she would have tipped so the waitress gets screwed over.

I was at a bar once with my girlfriend. There was about 5 people sitting down at the bar. The bartender spent all his time talking to this whore who was there to score free drinks (we saw her flirting with the bartender at another place nearby earlier in the night). We had empty drinks in our hand for 5-10 minutes before he walked by. The bill came out to $29.01. I tipped him 99 cents and he acted like I was the worst person in the world.

Is this the fault of the pizza guy that gets a job like this because he needs a job and you're part of his paycheck, or is this your fault for already knowing that tips are customary and still complaining about it instead of just getting carry-out?

As the Australian said, other countries already include the tip in the check. In America, tips are customary, and if you don't leave it, you're a cock. You can either pay the tip here in America in whatever amount you'd like, or you can go ahead and move somewhere else where they'll add a five dollar tip for you and make you pay it.

I tip like crazy because I know personally how awful it is for waiters from friends and family members. You have no idea the type of bullshit they deal with consistently. They should be paid twice as much as they currently make. As Cowutopia said, people will boss them around like dicks and basically humiliate them in front of everyone for the ridiculous service they demand, as if they were the only people in the restaurant, and the waitress has to do it for the tip and also so her boss doesn't get complaints, all the while still doing just as much work on her other tables. They get this dozens of times a night.

Tipping is karma. If you're not going to leave a tip, don't order delivery, and don't go to a restaurant. It's not the waiter's fault you showed up.

I used to work at Pizza Hut during high school and the first bit of college. Pakistani families brought in their entire families, ordered over one hundred dollars worth of food, were rude and treated their servers like shit and left a two dollar tip.

That sucks.

I usually give 10% for regular service, no tip for bad and 15 - 20% for great service.

P.S. If you don't tip your drivers they don't do you any favours. Drivers usually go into the kitchen and ask the cooks to rush a pizza ahead of the line if they know they're getting something extra at your door.

Buffets have pretty fast turnover. 5% is pretty common. I tip them the same as other restaurants.

They deserve more than your waiter. They're literally driving their own cars to your house to give you your food while the waiter just walks it to you from the kitchen.

Absolutely. You're paying them to drive a car so you don't have to. If you don't tip them, you're a huge cock, and you need to get your ass out and do carry-out. Delivery drivers put their lives on the line with every delivery, in terms of possible car troubles and getting robbed, which happens far more often than your best guess. They pay all of their own gas and car repairs (though the owner will usually put in for most of the gas), and it's a fuck of a lot harder for them to drive through crowded traffic at night to find your house in the dark than it is for you to find the pizza place.

I always tip 15-20% in most cases.

Most waitresses make below minimum wage. They have to bust thier asses and work on thier feet for most of the thier shift. There have been cases, where I've left nothing for a tip. When that happens, I usually leave a penny on the table, to show my disgust of the service that was provided.

I don't tip if more than two people take my order, deliver my drinks, deliver my food, and clean off our table because I know the waitress or waiter will take all of them even thlough they didn't earn it.

I really don't care if it makes me a bad person.

Generally I have a $5 minimum I tip, for meals where 15%-20% comes to next to nothing. Above that, usually 20% I guess. If the meal is extremely expensive, like in the $85 to $100 range, I usually double the tax which comes out to around 15%.

It's very rare that I don't leave a tip, in fact I can only remember doing it once. I took my girlfriend to an Interior Mexican food restaurant (that means food served in the interior of Mexico as opposed to Tex-Mex or Southwestern fare). The restaurant wasn't all that busy, as you could see most tables empty, but we stood there for about ten minutes waiting for anyone to come seat us. Nobody did, so I went to the bar at the back and asked if we could please have a table.

After we sat down, it took ten or more minutes for our waitress to come to the table to take our drink order, which didn't get brought back to us for about another 10 minutes, by someone other than our waitress, so we couldn't order even appetizers at this point.

Our waitress finally showed up again and we ordered our appetizers and meals. The appetizers didn't take too long, but she didn't bring us any plates to eat them on and they were extremely messy, so really, really required plates; we waited probably ten minutes for her to come back so we could ask for plates.

My girlfriend could not eat spicy foods, so she made it a point not to order anything marked even slightly spicy. After waiting for quite a while, our food was brought to the table. There was this tiny bowl on my girlfriend's plate, from which she took a bite. I could tell by her face that she could nearly die right there. Now, I LOVE spicy foods, but who the hell puts a bowl of fresh jullienne sliced habanero peppers on a meal that is not indicated spicy on the menu??? I took a bite and it was awful how hot those peppers were; I couldn't even handle it. My girlfriend's meal was ruined because she seriously couldn't eat anything after that. I was pissed.

It was yet another eternity before our waitress came back... No, wait... she never came back. After 20 or 30 minutes sitting there waiting for her, I got up and went to the bar and asked for my check. On the tip line, I made sure to put a very large $0. I do realize it wasn't her fault we weren't seated swiftly, and it wasn't her fault my girlfriend ended up with habanero peppers to eat, but still. The funny thing is, I was extremely nice the entire time we were at the restaurant, even when I filled out the big fat zero on the tip line of the receipt; I said thanks and we were off.

This restaurant came highly recommended by one of Austin's premiere Restaurant Reviewers. I never took his advice again, the fat fuck.

You're also being ignorant to the fact that over half of restaurants put all their tips in a tip jar to evenly distribute at the end of the night.

Its assholes like you who made me hate my pizza delivery job. We bust our asses and our cars to bring you your goddamn food for minimum wage, and then you asshats dont even have the courtesy to leave a tip. As for the gas charge, you should expect it. Gas costs money.

Actually, out of all of my jobs, that one was the one I liked the most. Hell, I loved it.

Also, you know the stories about how if you dont tip the delivery guy, he'll spit in your food the next time you order? Its true. We remember good and bad tippers. :)

No they don't. They drive to lots and lots of houses in one night. I am one stop, I see him one time. A waiter comes to my table numerous time and establishes an actual relationship with us and can make a dinning experience something special. A guy bringing me a pizza does none of that.

My father wouldn't have paid for the MEAL if it was that bad. He'd get the manager, bitch him out, and either allow a proper dish to be delivered to him or leave without paying.

He was/is sort of in the business so I guess he feels empowered by that, but I don't feel right being such a dick. I just wouldn't give that place any return service.

I usually just double the tax. I remember going to the now-defunt WWE Restaurant in Times Square with AshnVictor and Shingo. At the time I guess neither of us knew what gratituity was, so we gave that, plus the cost of the meal PLUS tip. So we pretty much tipped them twice. We felt so robbed because not only was it expensive, the food was cheap looking and cheesy. A chicken pizza was like $10. The weight of the chicken would fall off due to the very very VERY thin breading of the pizza. The burger was like $8 for a plain burger and it was small too.

The delivery driver is actually putting his own investment into giving you a meal. The waiter or waitresses won't remember you in five minutes.

When I waited tables, I made $2.15 an hour, so I totally depended on tips. As a result I always tip, even at a buffet(they clean up after you, after all). Sometimes it depends on what kind of shit the waiter/tress is having to deal with, like being over or understaffed. It's important to bear in mind what is the server's fault as opposed to the kitchen staff(who are usually at war in most establishments), etc. I generally only tip bartenders well if they really deserve it. I tip the pizza guy depending on the time frame and weather. Never do I tip the hotel people. I always tip the tattoo artist or piercer, and if I didn't shave my own head, I'd tip the barber. The tow truck guy and locksmith also get it if they've done a good job and I scammed triple AAA.
Ironically, I NEVER tip a stripper.

I constantly need refills on my beverages at resturants and if the waiter/waitress can stay on the ball I'll hook 'em up with a good tip (even more so if it is a hot waitress, I think I laid down $10 once which was about 50% of my bill). I shouldn't have to ask for refill which I do half the time it seems.

My bills usually come out to about $21 for my gf and I the minimum I leave is $3 ($2 at buffets)

It's fine if its justified. There isn't some universal waiter/waitress talk that they all say. My friend Sean used to be a waiter at Pizza Hut. He'd come into the kitchen and say: "That guy left me a bad tip!" I'd say: "Oh that sucks." Then he'd say: "No it's fine. It was a small order and I didn't pay that much attention to him." He was rational.

Then another friend of mine used to flip out, as if she expected a 5 dollar tip on every 20 dollar bill. Waiters and waitresses make a lot of money on tips. More than minimum wage even with their tips reduced. Drivers in my area do well too (150 - 200 bucks a night).

When I watch my watriess only take our order then do everything for another table and pocket tips, I for sure don't feel like rewarding her for shit service, even if it's not her fault.

To be fair though, I tip about 20% everytime I get devent service and usually 25% when I get great service. I'm not stingy, I just don't see why shitty service deserves a reward.

If I'm sitting at a table and my drink is empty, I'm looking towards where my waiter is at. If he/she is busy talking to another co-worker, instead of taking care of the customer, then I have a problem.

I dont tip because the person was kissing my ass or will remember me next week. I tip based on how convenient it was for me, which is usually inversely proportional to how convenient it was for them. Being on the ball with refills at a TGIF or whatever is great for me. Sitting around and telling me their specials and trying to be friendly is not. If you make my life easy, I tip well. If you make me wait while my mouth is dry, I do not.

Delivery guys, then, make my life VERY easy because I dont have to go get the food. They deserve a good tip.

I automatically assume the worse when they don't write down my order. I constantly say "no onions" for example and they don't write it down the first thing that pops into my head is "great, I'm having onions"

I'm the same way.

Everyone at the Chillis and Applebess is friendly, the good waiters are the ones that give you a new drink before you finish your old one, deliver steak sauce before your meal arrives, and get's your salad out to you during their return trip delivering your order. They deserve the big tips.

Because the delivery guy put more time and actual money (yes his car, and gas which the restaurants don't pay for) into serving you your food in the convenience of your own home.

It's common courtesy to tip him like a waiter or waitress. Put yourself in his shoes for a second, driving around all night with your car and gas with nobody tipping you.

Not only that, but the guy is putting mileage on the his/her vehicle. They have to pay for oil changes and regular maintenance at a more frequent rate.

:lol: But honestly, Ive seen very few waiter/ess' take orders from 5-7 people and not even write a thing down. Come back with drinks without asking who ordered what (even for those who got ice or no ice). Goes back to get the food when its ready and come back out and gives you the food without even asking who got what (even similar dishes but with a little difference such as medium-well vs. medium-rare). Now that is skill and good memorization. Pretty hard considering you have other orders to take and not writing them down either.

hate-charged apathy? This is quite a jump. I actually do pick up food when I can, but I don't have a car. And I do tip them, tip them well actually. All I am saying is that there is a lot more room for a waitress to please me than a driver. Im not tipping because its a dangerous job, Im tipping because of service and there is not much leeway in a delivery. Not to mention, where I live, delivering a pizza is not a dangerous thing. Maybe if I lived in a big traffic filled city, but the guy is driving three blocks filled with houses where I order.

Yes, it is a set service. Time is the only factor that is really variable to which adjust the sliding tipping scale.

A restaurant chain in NYC called "BBQs" specializing in Chicken and Ribs was the first time I ever encountered a gratuity charge.

I tip $2 minimum for delivery, and $3-4 if it's a big order. Andrew, I doubt ANY food service person, delivery or sit-down is going to remember their customers five minutes later. They're all pretty busy, and unless you're a regular, I doubt they'll remember any of their customers.

My parents are regulars at this little diner by us. My mom almost never has to tell them her order and they waitresses know to bring her out a diet coke with the meal. We give them lots of service and try and tip as much as we can.

Oil change specials usually costs about 25 bones. Oil usually costs about $12, oil filter $8. Then you have to figure out what the fuck to do with the old oil. I'll pay someone else to do it in 20 minutes.

You can take the car to Walmart and have them change the oil for little more than it would cost you to buy 5 quarts of oil and a filter. Still, it's $20 that is spent on a more frequent basis, than you would with a regular job. Then you have expenses like gas, brakes and air filters.

I don't tip on how nice they are. I tip on how enjoyable they make the meal. I've been to place where I have not had to ask for anything besides ordering. I think bringing you a freshly made pizza and allowing you to eat it in your home without you having to do anything but pick up a phone is a damn good way that they make your meal enjoyable.

I'm not even saying that drivers always deserve a better tip. Of course speed factors into this issues (which drivers don't control, cooks do), but people shouldn't just write delivery guys off. Give them some extra coin for their troubles too.

eh, I think 10-12% is effecient for a delivery guy on a regular order, thats all. All the delivery guys I have talked to have said that is pretty decent. I guarentee it is more than they get from most houses around here. The locals are fucking dicks and college kids don't usually tip well. I'm always amazed when a delivery guy looks suprised when I actually tip him properly.

10 - 12% is a pretty average tip. They say 15% is an average but the average is probably 10% (easy to calculate).

not while drunk, but i have carried 2 for 5 blocks many times, not being pussy helps.

Not if you buy oil at a discount. As for the old oil, put it in one of those empty containes from like detergent or something and bring it to your local gas station. By law they have to take it. I dont trust anyone doing it because they'll do a quick and rushed job. I rather do it myself and have the satisfaction that its properly done.

I rather have the satisfaction that its done correctly and well. As mentioned before, if you buy your oil on sale, you dont have to worry. As for air filters, you can buy one that isnt one of those one time use ones. Buy one of those lifetime ones where all you do is just clean it and just place it back on. Saves a hell of a lot of money.

frostwolf, I tip my barber. He's a wrestling fan, so we'll shoot the shit for a half hour, and I'll gladly tip him $5 (for a $10 haircut), for an enjoyably haircut. Plus, he deserves as much as possible for being able to get any blade through my hair.

I tip on the expectation of good service - i.e. the service has to be REALLY bad for me to leave less than 15%, though I usually just double ten percent of the before-tax total. The reason I do that is because usually restaurants don't let the waiters and waitresses keep the tips - they divvy them up evenly which isn't fair to that really friendly waiter who made some suggestions that ended up being the best meal ever while the table next to me got the pissy bitch who could barely be bothered to look at her customers. To me, that's no incentive to put any more than 50% effort into the job, knowing that I don't get my fair return.

I tip delivery guys 10-15% with a $3.00 minimum because I doubt any of them get reimbursed on gas mileage and I also highly doubt their company pays them extra for insurance on the car and thus they don't let their insurance company know about the business use on their vehicle. It's gay.

I've thought of that as well, and I've never tipped them before, but, given what they do, they really should be getting a tip. What these guy do can shape how people perceive you, especially on a first impression, and that would seem more important than some one walking food over to my table.

I work at an ice cream place and we have to sing for tips which kind of sucks ass. Then the tips are divided between 4-6 other people which sucks more ass. Then we are taxed on the tips we get, which sucks Rosie O'donald's ass.

I tip my hairdresser $5. One reason you tip the person that cuts your hair is that they usually get 50% or less of the cost of your cut; usually less. That's how they're paid in most places. And it usually depends on what level of hairdresser they are, based by their employers on years since they were licensed. So lower level hairdressers will get 25%, 30%, 40% of the cost of the cut. They aren't getting paid by the hour.

The guy behind the Starbucks counter is not making below minimum wage to be subsidized by tips like a waitperson in many states. You work at a coffee shop counter and move three feet side to side getting the coffee. You don't get a tip. The cost of the cup of coffee is enough.

I was being drastic, but that is what a tip is to me. But I never tip because I never have the chance to tip. Maybe because I am poor or because I never put myself in a situation where I need to tip. If you want to shit in my pizza you will have to come over to my house and stick your bum into my 450 degree oven.

However I do not like the idea because these people are paid to do these jobs. I KNOW they are paid poorly and this is bad, but instead of the problem being fixed by employers, we are forced to "tip"? It isn't even a TIP anymore, it is just expected from people, it doesn't mean anything. They night as well fix the prices in like some places do.

Id agree with you, but Ive had good pizza in Minnesota of all places, and there are some great places around UCLA (though most pizza in California is worthless).

Well I haven't been able to find a really good NYC-style pizza anywhere but around here. I just haven't lucked out I guess: it's totally possible for someone with the knowledge to try to spread it to other areas of the country.

The other thing I can't understand is why I can't find a really good bagel in other areas of our nation. When I lived in Illinois there were places selling nasty, rubbery Rosemary Tomato bagels, and like strawberry kiwi bagels, and I just couldn't wrap my mind around it.

My general theory: The farther you get from the coasts the worse the food gets.
The same with major metropolitan areas. A random italian restaurant in downtown NYC > a random italian restaurant in downtown CHI > a random italian restaurant in a mini mall in Kentucky.

Of course there are exceptions...and big exceptions, like I'm sure a chicken fried steak or a country breakfast along an interstate in Kentucky beats similar meals here. It just seems the quality of the food itself, and not necessarily the preparation, declines the farther inward you get.

That pisses me off too, and I don't play along with it. I was in a resturant in Manhattan last year and the service was fucking abysmal. Then I got the check and noticed a 'gratuity charge' had been included. Screw that. I asked to see the manager, told him how horrible the service was, and refused to pay the gratuity. He took off he charge.

On the other hand, my gf and I went to TGIFriday's the other night. She ordered a cheeseburger, but while waiting for it her stomach started acting up (she was just getting over a virus), so she didn't touch it when it got to the table. I had it wrapped, and naturally expected to pay for it. When the waitress (who was great to begin with) found out the problem she had the burger taken off the bill, which was a nice surprise. The adjusted check ended up being 20 bucks so I tipped her 8.

No, it is just my opinion of what I think a tip is for and what it means. I am fully aware of your thoughts towards it and understand what you are saying. If they fixed prices to pay for these people, I would still tip someone if I felt their service was amazing. Now it is like "Well I have to tip this person even though they just did a normal job, because they get payed poorly."
