My subscription is almost up and I want to change my gamertag. What is the best way to do this? Do I have to call them and cancel my existing one? I don't want them to automatically bill my existing one. Creating a new one isn't a problem.

Yes, a call is the best way to do this. If you let your subscription run out, they'll just charge your credit card for an automatic renewal. Your best bet is to purchase a new 1-year subscription card, then call Microsoft Xbox Live Customer Service. They won't let you change your current Gamertag, so you'll have to cancel that one, and start a new one with the 1-year card you bought.
That sucks, it's like having a perm ID number marked on your forehead. I have till the end of the year to renew mine and I'm thinking of doing a name change right now, but if what you say really is true.... damn.
Yeah, I kind of thought it was going to be that way. Kind of blows since they are only opened Monday through Friday. I have a new card just waiting and my current sub is up on the 7th of July. Looks like I'll have to take care of this during the week.
They let me change mine. I think it depends on who you talk to.
