Supreme Court Makes Ruling on Eminent Domain Issue

So a case in the Supreme Court was about a city's use of eminent domain. In the past, the jurisdiction would take land for (properly compensated for) schools, roads, etc. But in the past few years cities have begun to take people's homes and turn it over to corporations to build office complexes and other private, for-profit use.

And the Supremes said this is okay.

Quite frankly, Im worried about some jurisdiction taking my home and giving it to some guy who knows people in city hall and using it to build an office complex and a fortune.

Also, that's completely bogus. No one's property should be taken away. I can see future problems and many unhappy families forced to move out of their homes.

The past few years? The government has been letting states and cities use eminent domain for various sundry economic reasons for decades. There has been rulings that go either way in the past (I did a report on this for Urban Sociology, so I can dig up cases if you want), but essentially the government hasn't stood in the way of big business when it uses its local political power to snatch land from private citizens and give it cheaply to the corporate America.

Okay the big cases to look at are Berman v. Parker and the 1981 Poletown case.

Ahh, okay. This is something that really every American should be against, as its a matter of strictly enforcing and protecting property rights (Republicans should be for that) and not letting powerful corporations run over powerless individuals (Democrats should be for that).

I understand the desire to generate tax revenue through more lucrative developments but come on, this is the type of shit tyrants would do to get more money. Yea, those guys would just take it whereas the cities have to fairly compensate the owners but come on.

"Just compensation" is just a term, I assure you the cities and states have a million ways to get around paying the true value. In fact, there are OTHER cases I can show you where they used some real underhanded ones; constantly reassessing the property to drive up taxes until the owners wanted to move, then bringing them down to rock bottom so the government could buy it cheap from them.
