First PSP game to force firmware update via UMD game

How can they force you to get the update on your own? I can see if the update is built into the game, but not allowing you to play the game if you dont have it? Bullshit. Considering the PSP doesnt come with a USB cable and most people dont have WIFI, Sony tech support is fucked come X-mas.

It comes with the game.

Okay, let's say this nice, clear, and slow:

Future games, depending on the game, may come with a firmware update on the actual UMD that the game is on.

When you put it into your PSP, it will tell you that the game cannot be played without updating the firmware. From there, you can decide to update the firmware either via the firmware update on that UMD, or via the "old" way, or you can decide not to update your firmware and not play the game.

In order to update the firmware, you PSP much be plugged into the wall, so there will be no problem of the battery dying while doing so.

Wait, are you trying to tell me that to play games, I have to buy Coded Arms to get the upgrade or else I won't be able to play Wipeout Pure anymore?

I am sure every single game will come with whatever firmware version it requires on the game disc. Like how every PC game comes with the Direct X required to use it.

If anything else occurs then Sony are a bunch of ape asses. But I don't see them being that dumb.


edit: and I am not so sure hacking it to report a different firmware version will work, because what if the game uses features added in the new firmware?

It doesnt automatically update. It tells you that you need to update the firmware inorder for you to play.

The update is on the UMD itself. If you look at picture #3, there is a section for the firmware.

Welcome to my job. Fortunately it's just for our local IP and I get to watch cable, download crap and post or play games in between calls. But oh man, when the people are stupid, man they make my head hurt.

One thing I do not get is, 99% of the time when I tell someone to shut down their computer (so we can reset the modem before we try a ton of other things), even if I word it "Please shut your computer down, sir/ma'am and leave it off" they ALWAYS ask "Do you want me to shut it down and then restart it?" ahhhhhhh

Does this mean that you will have to update firmware each time you play a game? Or, once you have the most recent firmware, all games will work? (Eg, if you have 2.0, games that require 1.5 and 1.51 will work.) If it's the latter, it doesn't seem like a big deal.

I get the impression that this makes it hard to use emulation. Why is that? Do the emulators not work with the newer firmware?
