I was going to mention the Studios at Las Colinas as well. Home to movies JFK, RoboCop and Forest Gump. Walker Texas Ranger was also shot there.

Dallas also has many lakes surrounding the city: Lake Louisville, Lake Ray Hubbard, Joe Pool Lake and Lake Worth.

When visiting Cleveland:

• If you're white be sure to check out lovely East Cleveland, which has quite a lively night-time exercise program provided you're Caucasian.
• If you're black be sure to visit scenic Little Italy, as while they may not be as prejudical as they used to be it's still a great place for darkies.

We've got Gilly's donuts (although that's down in Little Italy) which aren't as good as Presti's which they replaced but it's still nice having a fresh made family donut shop. A lot of people love Tommy's which is mostly known for its vegetarian foods although they make some killer meat sandwiches too. I was about to list Chubby's as they made the best goddamn pastrami sub I've ever had in my life but they closed a while ago. :(

For bars Coventry houses B-Side which is often better left ignored and the excellent Grog Shop which often has good music. They also house the meat markets of Paninis, McNulty's, and Winking Lizard, or you could head down to the Flats for that (not that I can tell you what's down there since I generally avoid the place like the plague). There's the foreign/indie film theaters of the Cinematique and the Cedar Lee, and a block of bars next to the latter with a not-so-neat little underexposed place called Felt on the next block over that I visit anyway because half the staff I either grew up with or lived with. One of those bars is Jimmy O'Neils which serves some awesome fucking nachos.

Except that the IMAX screen is owned by the science center so they only have something worth watching every few years. I've only been there once (when they opened) because they've never made me care. The Cedar Lee, on the other hand, is a beautiful polar opposite of Severance (if you're black) or Shaker Square (if you're white) making a nice balance. There's also a $1.50 second-run theater... somewhere. Nice place to go if you ever want to imagine you're standing on the floor on a porn theater, for an idea of how clean it's kept.

Oh yeah, there's also Severance Center (not the same as the above mentioned Severance, which is a strip mall) for classical presentations, located near University Circle which has museums for art and history and a botanical garden (all of which is next to the Cinematique).

I also recommend Big Fun, just because they have awesome shit like New Kids on the Block stickers and original Tranformers toys and stuff.

Ohio also has the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton.

I've been on that battleship in NC, the USS North Carolina. Was cool. Didn't know it was supposed to be haunted though. The drive there from Myrtle Beach really gave me a bad impression of the Carolinas though, man.

As for beautiful Barrie, Ontario? Well...4 Strip Joints, 15 Porn Stores, 2 Walmarts and Live 8 next weekend. Woo us.

Uncle Julio's is overpriced shit. If you're talking the whole Addison/Carrollton/Far North Dallas area, you're much better off with Abuelo's, El Fenix, or Blue Mesa Grill.

I've ate at all 3 of those restaurants. Abuelo's is just as pricey, El Fenix is no better than El Chico's and I haven't eaten at Blue Mesa in quite some time. Isn't Blue Mesa more seafood and authentic Mexican dishes, than it is Tex-Mex?

Yeah. I was just naming places where you can get equally good mexican food for less money, except Abuelo's. Honestly my favorite places to go for mexican are Sol's in Deep Ellum, Dos Charros in Richardson, Fuzzy's in Ft. Worth, and El Guapo's in Denton.

Here's a brief tutorial on Barbecue for you people that don't live in Texas causing you to have no idea what Barbecue actually is... Barbecue is measured by the greatness of Brisket and it's Brisket that defines how good or bad a barbecue place is. Brisket. Not loose meat pork crap. Certainly not hamburgers and hot dogs. Not even barbecued chicken or turkey.

There's a whole culinary diatribe that can be devoted to sausage alone (read "real" comma "good" before sausage), but you don't go to a Barbecue place for its sausage (unless you're in Elgin or Gonzales and unless you've had sausage from these places, you most likely haven't had great sausage ever; I'll find you a weblink and you can go order some then you'll know I'm right and not just being a dick about how great Texas is blah blah blah). People in Texas drive a hundred miles to a little shit town to get things like Elgin Sausage, or Fredericksburg Peaches or whatever.

There's a whole other diatribe that could be devoted to ribs. Still... It's really all about the brisket.

Brisket should be smoked overnight. Preferably in mesquite, but oak is common. It should be cooked in a pit. So there you go. Three things you need to know to look for good barbecue: Pit Smoked Brisket. Anything else: crap. There are obviously stratifications of quality even among Pit Smoked Brisket, but you do a search for Austin Barbecue and see if you don't see the phrase "even bad barbecue in Texas/Austin is better than pretty much any barbecue from any place else ever". Why is that? Pit. Smoked. Brisket.


Austin Barbecue:

Stubb's: Their barbecue is pretty popular, and it may even be possible to find their sauce at your very own supermarket. However, Stubb's is more famous as a live music venue. Lessee... Who's playing soon?... Spoon, Howie Day, Cake, Lamb of God... They host a pretty diverse group of performers.

Ruby's BBQ made Esquire's list of "Things Worth a Detour" in 2002, coming in at #8 as "The best barbecue in America." Quote/unquote: "All-natural beef brisket (antibiotic-and hormone-free) smoked overnight, and mustard potato salad so good it'll make Mom feel bad. Wash it all back with a cold Shiner Bock." And Gourmet Magazine's "Restaurants We Love" in 2003: "Austin may be disappearing behind a cloud of glitz, but it's still brisket and picnic tables at Ruby's BBQ, where the meat is piled high on wax-paper-covered trays and served with a spicy sauce. ...The brisket, steroid-free and smoked 18 hours over post oak in brick pits-is as sophisticated as it gets."

Salt Lick. For some reason, people around here nearly deify this place. I've had crappy brisket there enough time not to get very excited about going, however, I've also had really good brisket there. It's just unfortunate to me that it's been spotty quality-wise. But like I said, the locals and transplants around here love this place. Love it. I say skip it and go to these other places. But it's fair warning, if you ask somebody around here where to get good barbecue, you're probably going to be told Salt Lick.

Rudy's (not Ruby's) Eat Here Get Gas. It's a gas station and also one of the finer barbecue places around. In fact, it's fairly split between the locals whether Rudy's is the place to go or Salt Lick. I've only had Rudy's a couple of times. I wasn't disappointed, but I wasn't knocked off my feet either. It's good, it may even be great. I'd probably give it the nod over Salt Lick.
