I was talking about Hollywood being creatively drained when it pretains to remakes, solely. There's been some fine, fine, original movies (both Hollywood and Independent) released this year. Hell, even a decent remake or two. I greatly enjoyed War of the Worlds.

Because some of us feel that King Kong (the original) is an excellent movie, and this film builds on it. If you didn't like King Kong to begin with, you're probably not going to like Jackson's pretty faithful adaptation, but if you did then, as you've admitted, this film has merit.

That's probably why I'm not blown away by the remake- I'm just not a huge fan of the original. I don't know why- it was well made for its time and everything and I certainly feel it deserves the accolades heaped upon it over the years. But I'm just not big into monkeys. If Kong was a giant penguin or something I might have gotten more into it. I sure would have been sadder when he died.

But yes, after seeing Jackson's version I agree that the remake has merit to fans of the original and even thouse that are new to the series. I'm just bitchy about the glut of remakes in general.

RE: Naomi Watts being "actually allowed to emote"...? She played the typical damsel in distress, that's all. Other than being really, really hot she didn't do anything that took away from Fay Wray's (at the time) milestone performance as Ann. Now that bitch could scream.

I saw Narnia and Kong on the same day. WHile I'll admit Kong was a better movie I completely understand why narnia tromps B.O wise.

No one ever,EVER gave a good reason why this movie had to be made. Why is it important. It's a fucking remake. Yes the original is classic, yes the true vision can probably be seen now, but who cares. Everyone knows the story. They know the deal. King Kong doesn't have rabid fans that have been exclaiming for movie versions like Narnia or LOTR forever.

I hope Narnia continues to dominate King Kong. Just to see the damage control people continue to spin.

The word pretentious is overused and wrongly used SO often that I hate to say it, but dude, that is a very pretentious sentence. I'm not saying it isn't true, but you could start analyzing and over-analyzing any movie like that.

This is one of the more extreme examples where all the real pleasures come from the movie's devices themselves, rather than from the content they're supposed to be serving. If that makes any sense. Not that there is no content, but the real draw is for those people that want to get lost in the craftsmanship of the whole thing and not think about it. There isn't a single line of dialogue or facial expression that isn't hammered into your face with the music swelling up behind it. The actors could have done the whole thing with a single frozen =O face and the effect wouldn't really change. It's definitely good entertainment, but I think it might be too much excess for some people from older generations, or maybe for intelligent, non-stupid smart guys.

Anyway, the way they re-created old New York was amazing. Wasn't it?

IMHO the music was timed well with Kong and Anne's increasing sadness. The soundtrack was perfectly fine for all the other characters, just normal old school movie music. shrugs And Kong's facial expressions were amazing.
