Rare Video Game Thread

Everyone knows of some rare titles for past generations, i.e. Radiant Silvergun, Panzer Dragoon Saga and what used to be till they rereleased it DragonBall GT. What's some ones for this generation? Recently I was watching X-Play and they mentioned that Rez was going for 100 dollars and Gitaroo Man was going for 80 bucks, so I checked ebay(where else would prices like this be listed) and Rez was 100 bucks, but Gitaroo Man was 119(sealed mind you). What's some other ones out there? A Thread to list them all.

How much can you get a spindle of CDRs for now?

NCAA Basketball 2K3 for Gamecube was getting some scratch a while ago.

Um. Yeah, I'm no help in this thread. Oh, maybe that Zelda Collector's Edition Comp for Gamecube. No idea how many were printed but I could see this being a prized possession down the line for its practicality of not having to bust out the N64 or NES to play the classics.

Dai Senryaku will become one of those titles, but right now it's selling for under $20 on ebay.

Disgaea:HOD is already hitting the $75 mark for a sealed copy. I'm sure by the end of next year, the game will hit the $100 mark.

Firefighter F.D. 18 has the potential to become one of those rare titles, that will demand a somewhat high price.

Gamestop sells it for about $40, so it does have the potential to become one of those high priced titles.

Is Disgaea that rare? I still see new copies every now and then (for $49.99). Maybe I should pick one up.

Listing what will be rare is actually very useful and an idea I had for a thread just today.

Specifically and ideally, I want a system that warns me when a game is becoming hard to find. That way, I can put off buying stuff I don't need/have time for. So many times I predict such-and-such will be hard to find later so I better pick it up now. Then it turns out there were far too many made with almost no demand and I could've waited and saved a bunch of money. Likewise, I can't pay attention to everything and by the time I realize it, some games have become *rare* and super-expensive before I realized they were even heading down that road.

But I'm not sure how one would properly gauge that a game is going to start going up in price. Sometimes online sites run out and ebay prices start to soar but the game can still be found for super-cheap at places like Fry's up to a year later.

p.s. thanks for reminding me about Firefighter F.D. 18. I gotta pick that up.

Rez is $100US? I saw a stack of the things awhile ago for $20CDN, didn't get a copy because I already had the Dreamcast version, darn.

Someone's trying to pawn off a copy of Bonk 3 for $240US, maybe I should get an eBay account.

Its a safe bet that if its a niche title and was hard to find the day it came out, that its going to be rare and expensive at some point.

Yes. Firefighter F.D. 18 is rare? Wal-Mart here has a shitload of them. Ebay has them going for $25-$30 on average, which is about what it costs to get. Thanks for the title of Dai Senryaku. Virtual On Marz is another potential rarity, if it isn't already. Gekido Advance and River City Ransom EX come to mind as rarities.

All of these titles are desired, not rare.

I have the first five games. I never trade my games in, and I go video game hunting once in awhile to find games to resell.

I have Gitaroo Man (got it for $12 at a local store), and got about $40 for Code Veronica, which blew my mind.

Is PS2 Culdcept rare?

A lot of times the only RARE videogames are the ones that nobody except collectors care about - weird demos, crappy special editions of a game, etc.

The two picks of my collection are Radiant Silvergun and my Storm of Progear Jap CPS2. :)

What about "The Guy Game" Didn't that get pulled from the shelves not too long after it was released?

Pretty much. Though I do have to say Rodland and Mr Gimmick, the two rarest PAL NES games, are pretty damn awesome. So there are exceptions to the rule.

And then there are games like Action 52 that will make any gamer rot away and die on contact.

I predict Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne will be fetching large sums soon. I haven't seen a copy ANYWHERE since about two months from when it released, and even then it wasn't around a lot.

Also, I haven't seen new copies of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for quite a while. And even if it is out there more than I'm seeing, it'll end up fetching a lot eventually because it's an FF game.

Metal Slug 3 Xbox and Fatal Frame II (both PS2 & Xbox) are some other pretty sure bets, IMO.

As for ones that get there on perpetually strong word of mouth over rarity, Shadow Hearts II seems like it could get there.

I've seen Hagane on the SNES go for as much as $60 (as low as $12, WTF?) from time to time.

I am saddened to hear about Gitaroo Man's prices. How bad is the language barrier if I choose to save $$ and buy the import?

RARE....not SHITTY

Spikeout, as with any game whose main draw is online play, won't have much time in the sun. The servers for it will be shut down eventually, and once they are, the game will be as valuable as Alien Front Online.

This thread needs its title changed to "Expensive video game thread". As diff said, most rarities are shitty little games which are rare for a reason. My rarest game is probably Guardian of Darkness, which is GOD AWFUL.

as for expensive games, I always see PAL Kula World going for crazy amounts.

Your standards for rare are low. Actually, it seems to be the case for most people. It is a relative term, to be sure, but rare means things like "Darius Alpha bonus copy" to me.

Agreed. There is nothing rare on the PS2, GameCube, or Xbox.

I seem to recall Record Of lodoss War for the DC to have a very limited run..

If you ever pick up an issue of Tips and Tricks magazine they always have a small section called "Collectors Corner" and have listings of rare games, and they are ALWAYS crappy games. Because they came out in super low print runs and no-one bought them, or they are some special location test cartridge or something.

Like: DDR Disney for PSone that comes with the pad, Tetris World for NUON, or like this special gold cartrdige of Punch-Out!! for the NES where you only get to fight Bald Bull because it was made for a contest.

More rare stuff: the Blockbuster Edition of Donkey Kong Counter that Nintendo Power sold. Final Fight Guy is another rarity. I'm not sure if the newer Blockbuster-only games are rare, but I doubt it.

I got Ninja 5-O new for $9.99 at EB a week or two after it came out.

Fry's had five to ten copies of P.N.03 for $12 or $15 (I can't remember which) today.

They also had about ten copies of La Pucelle for $19.99 each (I don't know if this is getting rare, but I haven't seen new copies of it anywhere else recently).

Oh, they also had Gekido Advance for $15.

Metal Gear Solid Substance (PS2) got really hard to come by new, but I bought mine at Circuit City back towards the beginning of the year for $19.99.

EB had Shin Megami Tensei on their shelves yesterday.

Gekido Advance is pretty good, although there's far too much plot in it for my liking. I got two copies of that for $15 each at TRU about a year ago.

I've got one to throw in the wind majical chase for the game boy color. :chunobi:

Shrek Super Party(wtf?)- Lousy as hell game that came with an Gamecube bundle I bought off ebay.

A lot of these games aren't exactly rare as you can find tons of them listed on ebay. They're just expensive due to their high demand.

Strangely a lot of games that had huge printruns in the US ended up with very low JPN prints. Titles like The Ooze...among others are extremely rare in Japan(Course I'm not entirely sure). Anyway..

Nothing actually *rare*. Beach Spikers can still be had for as little as $12. The closest thing would be the Zelda Collector's discs. Resident Evil 2, 3, and X tend to fluctuate in price. But really beyond that there's nothing. Ikaruga might become a possibility simply because it's Treasure(Then again so is Light Crusader which can be had new for $5). I heard the Gamecube Hudson soft remakes(Bonk's Adventure, etc) are getting more expensive.

Playstation 1/2
Valkyrie Profile, the Persona games, Rez, Disgaea(More due to Atlus's lousy printrun than anything else; La Pucelle and Phantom Brave got much higher prints), quite a few PS1 RPGs, the CAVE ports are also rising in price.

Dreamcast
Borderdown(Especially the LE) is rapidly rising in price. Other than that I have no idea as it's a market I don't particularly follow.

Aside from Dracula X and Darius Alpha you also have:

Substance is rare? Hell, I saw an Xbox and PS2 one in EB Games going for 15 bucks. I think it wasn't used. Not to sure. Hell, I would kill to get ahold of MvC2. I downloaded the original one on my computer and fell in love with it. Oh, I know this doesn't relate to any of this, but how rare is Metal Gear for the Nes and how much do you think I could get off of it in Ebay? It's practically new, but it's not in box or anything.

I bought Tales of Destiny II off of a friend last month for roughly 20$CDN and a month prior to that someone gave me Tales of Destiny I for free (in exchange for a copy of Xenosaga)

Both are fun games, but I wouldn't think of paying as much as what they go for on ebay.

One of the few Japanese DC games I'd really consider rare is Twinkle Star Sprites. During my time living over there, I was able to find almost every other game I ever looked for, or was asked to look for. But TSS is an honest to god bitch to track down.

Metal Gear, not complete= $not.shit
The toploading NES's used to fetch absurd amounts, $150+, but they've really dropped off since Attack of the Clones.

Also, Dracula X, while pricey, is hardly close to rare. No numbers to back me up, but I'd bet the SNES version is actually the rarer of the 2.
Ghost Lion on NES is pretty scarce.
Can anyone tell me how rare or not Gundam EFF Vs Zeon & DX is for DC?

One of my friends gave me a copy of Drac X for SNES last year. I guess he had no need for it. And what does Attack of the Clones have to do with the top loading NES?

Well, at least I know my Nes is worth a pretty penny. I read something a few years back in EGM that French made v.2 were about 1,000$. It's been a long time since I read that so I might be wrong. I just wish I could find my freakin' Power Glove. I know that's got to be worth some money. Oh, how rare would The Bouncer from Squaresoft on the PS2 is?

Bouncer isn't too rare, nor does it go for much now.

The top loading NES is still really valuable, I've been looking into the NES situation thoroughly lately and none of the clone systems are compatible with every game and perform as well on all games as a true NES. Lots of people do go the clone route, but the hardcore gamer still isn't settling for less than the real thing. You don't play the actual games to deal with compatibility and playback issues, that's what emulation is for.

I used to have Street Fighter 2 for Matching Service but it didn't work with the Utopia so a traded with my friend for Fighting Vipers 2. I must be crazy cuz I bought Cosmic Smash when it was new on a whim for 60 bucks, don't think the game is worth 60 now or then

Suikoden 2 is rare, no doubt as well was suikoden 1.

I don't think there's any shortage of copies of Red Star here in NA, though. I have seen a lot of copies of Red Star here, but only concentrated at a few stores. They seem to have produced a fair number of copies but just have really crappy distribution.

That might be true but i've heard that alot of people in japan are actually taking an interest in the game. I havent seen a copy anywhere but at my local mom and pop store. This game didnt have that big of a print run so i dont think it will be easy to find outside of ebay a year from now.

Mystical Ninja for SNES and N64 were 2 of my favourite games yet I never even knew about Ganbare Goemans Adventure or whatever for N64... that was a sidescroller... my god, I feel like booting up the N64 now and getting this off ebay.

I remember playing the completely 3D, third person Mystical Ninja game for N64, but never this!

I was a big Mystical Ninja fan when it first came out on the N64, I have lots of fond memories but I have a feeling that if I played it again reality would set in.

Same here man. Remember the giant robot battles and Mt.Fuji? Great times as a kid.

That game was all about the robot fights.

The 3d Mystical Ninja on N64 I found lame, but the side scroller brought all the fun of the original back.

Someone should do an update in this thread on what games got a reissue through VGD or whoever it was. Because I got Gitaroo Man that way, and I know there are others here who might like some of those rare titles. That is unless you guys are going to bitch about these reissues not being marked like those shitbags at the ATLUS boards.

Outrun 2006 for Xbox is really hard to find (and expensive).

Those shitbags in particular are some of the most insane ones, though. I grabbed Disgaea for $5 during the first big Circuit City clearance, never got around to playing it so I never took the wrapping off. Those nutjobs ended up bidding it up to something like $110. It now sells for $30 new or so... I don't feel bad.

The reissues of PS2 Rez at $40 seem to be sold out from that Game Quest site, but I haven't looked too hard. Wouldn't mind grabbing that eventually, considering I don't have a DC up here.

I dunno, but I just have this creeping distrust of STEAM. It reminds of iTunes in that you really don't 'own' everything you buy, you just have the ability to access it on command. I think it's just my inherent distrust of all digital distribution, but yeah in the end you can get it there or GameTap.

Personally I'd just prefer a hard copy. Does that make me as weird as the people who won't buy guts or Greatest Hits versions?

It's not like itunes though. Your ownership is much more complete. Once it's in your account you can download it any time you want over and over on all of your computers.

itunes makes you re-buy the songs if your HD crashes, only lets you put the file on 3 devices and all this restrictive shit. Steam honestly feels like a convenience, being able to access my games wherever I am without needing to have the disc.

I actually do own a hard copy of Psychonauts, and considered re-buying it on Steam for that reason.

But don't you have to be connected to STEAM first before you can play the game? That just seems like a leash to me.

If you are going to buy psychonauts, buy a signed copy from the site. The poster they have with all the characters is pretty awesome too.

That site is comedy gold, btw.

Yeah. This bothers me somewhat, but it's never actually become an issue. Every computer is always online nowadays. Pain in the ass on airplanes, but not much else. Ultimately Steam is more convenient than having to have a disc with me.

i remember burning all the install files of hl2 to a disc after i downloaded the entire game off steam (after having a free coupon from ati for almost 2 years before the game finally came out). sure it's not retail but i'm pretty sure there's an option to backup all your games to disc.

There is. You still need to be logged in to play, though.

The game's original price of $60 is a little unreasonable considering the content, but it's a fun game. Someone should contact G.Rev about sprucing it up at bit, and selling it to XBLA. Leaderboards on the harder boards would be pretty crazy.

Also, Outrun 2006 xbox is not too hard to find at less than $30, which was it's original release price.
