So another summer, another hurricane season for us Floridians and other people living in the south. We can use this thread to keep tabs on the storms all season and what not.
Dennis came and left. No problems here.

Any one have any problems? I had my family from Pensacola come in yesterday.
I lost power from Friday night to Sunday morning. But we seem to be ok now.

it passed by,went back to a tropical storm, and now back again up to a catagory 2 in the gulf. Looks like the panhandle is going to get it hard.
And Central Florida avoids the bullet for now.

Take a 15+ foot storm surge & apply it to New Orleans, which is 12 feet below sea level. If it hits NO directly, this will be the worst disaster to hit a US city in quite some time.

My parents' house is in between Gulfport and Bay St. Louis - they made it here to Gainesville this afternoon and expect to not have a home to go back to. Supposedely, word is a 20 foot wall of water (kind of like that Tsunami earlier this year out in Asia) rolled in and took out everything quite a ways inland and west of Gulfport. Worst part is hurricane season is just starting.
I think my dad is fed up with living on the gulfcoast. The older he and mom get, the harder it is for them to prepare (sandbag and board-up everything) for all of these hurricanes. I think he's going to end up traveling the states in a Winebago with insurance kickback and just say "fuck it" to rebuilding, from the sounds of it. :\
This fucker's supposed to really screw with the economy, too.
It's already shut down several oil refinery plants down there, so expect higher gas prices shortly.

New Orleans is normally 6 feet below sea level, and is located in a bowl-shaped area. It was basically designed to be flooded, it seems. Over 80% of New Orleans is under water, and it's getting worse by the hour as the various dykes and levies surrounding the city are being overcome by the flooding. One of my college friends lives (well, now lived) in a suburb of New Orleans, but thankfully he and his family evacuated on Sunday. They drove nearly 14+ hours to Mobile, only to go further to Birmingham when they were told Katrina was heading towards Mobile.
He's not sure if his second-floor apartment is submerged in water, but he's slowly accepting the possibility that he'll have to start over anyway. It might take up to four months before he can go back and survey the damage. In the meantime, he's driving another 14+ hours to Houston to live with some relatives.
One of my friend just went to Florida to do electrician shit and help Hurricane relief like a month or two ago and tomorrow he's driving to New Orleans to start over there.
16 hour days/7 days a week/40 dollars an hour (maybe more) = FUCKING LOADED.
I had alot of cousins by Lake Ponchatrain whose homes are now completely underwater. A total loss, but only in property. Thankfully, all of them got out of the area. However, my Grandmother is still stuck in the west bank; no flooding, but there's no electricity or running water, and no idea when they'll get it back there. I'm not sure just how much canned food and bottled water she has.
I'm frustrated because almost each and every one of our relatives offered to drive her out of the area, and she was too stubborn to leave.

Monday classes got canceled (but only after I went to all of mine). The dorm dad told us we all had to leave, BUT, the Prez decided we could stay IF we signed a release form saying we wouldn't sue the school if we died and stuff.
So I stayed monday night and all of tuesday. It was pretty windy and rained like 30 or 40 hours with out end. Power never went out here, though it did go out at my parents' house.
We have awesome weather today. Sunny with a nice mild temp.
Aww, we were hoping for something exciting, like having to raft through your ruined neighborhood on top of a deceased relative to liberate some food from their watery supermarket graves.

The devastation down there especially upsets me, as I went to New Orleans on vacation a few years ago (I stayed in the French Quarter) and it really is an absolutely beautiful city, filled with rich architecture and history.
