First time with P.N.03

Well, decided to finally buy P.N.03, got a good deal on a used copy for $10 at EB and I like it a lot so far. The colors are kind of dull but everything else is so slick and stylish. I am lovin' Vanessa's choreographed robot killing so far even if the control is taking a little bit to get the hang of.

Yet another time EGM has missed the mark. Surprisingly, it's not quite the dull travesty they made it out to be. :rolleyes: Glad I listened to folks here and on Shmups who enjoy the game.

A few questions: how far do I have to play the first level in order to save and is 4-way lock on not possible 'till later? I assume I have to get an upgrade chip?

PN03 is awful and one of the worst games this generation. Yea, you could make an argument that Pryzm the Dark Unicorn or some other nonsense $19.99 game is worse but Capcom shouldve known better.

Haven't played the game myself, but the videos I've seen look interesting. What's so awful about the game?

There's nothing "awful" about the game. That's just more useless hyperbole from someone who probably barely touched it.

Aspects that some might not like? The control takes getting used to. The environments have a sterile look to them that many will see as just bland. Gameplay is relatively thin in the same way a shmup's is (shoot shoot shoot, dodge dodge dodge).

Lots of good points though. The overall style of the game came together really well. The music and lead character's animation are great. It's challenging and addictive, collecting the suits and slowly getting better. It's a unique title and well worth $20 if you want something with its own flair.

The game is great. Something that should be in any Cube owner's collection.

I just faced a couple of cannons in the compound which both shot two wide intercrossing, pink lazers. Very sweet. I died in one hit. :(

I like the game but I have to admit it's incredibly flawed. What irks me is how Capcom chose to charge 50 dollars for such a half-assedly designed game. 10 dollars is the perfect pricepoint. A dollar more and I would've been pissed.

...again, I enjoyed it. It was 10 dollars and I wanted to try another of the elusive "Capcom 5" games (that apparently were supposed to "revolutionize" gaming).

I actually liked this game a lot.

I love the sterile old-school sci-fi look it has so the repetition didn't bother me much. The game is decent, worth playing if you're into arcade shooters but by Capcom standards it's disappointing.

Played the game at GAME in Southport once. I've been meaning to pick this up but it's a rarity to come across in my area. Guess I'm going to have to fish for it online. I love the style and although the controls were a bit fiddly the first few minutes in they were surprisingly intuitive. Anyone know a site/offer where I can get this for cheap?

I like PN03, for $10, it is a good shooter with some weird controls.

Yeah, I will admit I would not want to spend $40 on it FWIW. The controls definitely need more polish. Sometimes they feel good, other times not so responsive.

OK, I have twice fought the big boss robot at the end of mission 1, is it possible to beat it now if am quick enough or do i just have to wait 'till later when i have more gear as the computer says?

I'm kidding. I don't have a bad opinion of PN 03, I just don't think I'd be any good at it so I never really gave it a chance. I had the exact same problem with GunValkyrie, in fact it was my bad experiences with GunValkyrie that led me to passing on PN 03.

PN 03 does have a lot of style though, I won't deny that.

Same here, I REAAAAALLLY wanted to like GunValkyrie, but I hated the controls no matter how used to them I was, and I hated the "kill every enemy in the area" tasks that were ever so abundant.

A two-player cooperative mode is available in the score attack mode (no credits for you!), but it's also inevitably broken because the developers didn't make the playing field wide enough to compensate for two characters running around on opposite ends of the screen. In other words, except to die often from running right into an invisible wall while your friend's busy dodging bullets and hugging the only “real” wall onscreen.

I personally really liked the game, the challange was at just the right level i thought, and I liked going back through levels to try and get as high a score as I could, like a good shump it requires alot of quick reflexes and thinking


in an industry flooded with WWII FPS', RTS games, and general Army games out the ass, P.N.03 much like Killer 7 is something different for those willing to give it a try

I don't see what's so wrong about this. Style alone can't save a horrible-playing game, but it can certainly elevate a game to greatness. It's kind of like the new War of the Worlds movie. I really enjoyed it, and I didn't find the characters or actors compelling or interesting at all. I didn't think some of the devices used for suspense were effective either ("hide and seek" like in Jurassic Park). I still really enjoyed the movie because of the unique effect the concept and effects put together had on me.

If this is true for movies it's probably at least twice as applicable to games, which you are experiencing even more personally for a much longer amount of time. So I'd say style and atmosphere can make or break a game to the same extent that gameplay can.

PN03 is a fun little game. It's pretty shallow, but the action is great and at times the heavily rigid design makes it feel a bit like an action/puzzle game. If it were a small release at $20, it probably would have been better received than it was. Enjoyable as it is, it's not worth $50 and not worthy of being a part of some "big five."

Commercially unsuccessful, yes, but Viewtiful Joe is widely recognized as being an awesome game (I'd personally put it above RE4). Game Rankings and GameStats have the game somewhere around 91%.

frostwolf, I'm not a big fan of shooters, and even I enjoyed PNO3. If you can find it, definitely give it a shot.

I'll play this game later, thanks for bringing it to my attention again. Think I will unlock everything via a cheatcode though, to see all the upgrades and stuff without the hard work.
Yes, I am widely known as Mr Cheatcode.

Andy was there, we really gave the game a chance. Maybe you have to work hard and adjust to the awkward, stilted, and unintuitive controls before you can find any fun in the bland, repetitive levels, but honestly we all know that better games exist. Should I waste my time working to find the fun in a C to D grade game just because it's $10? I guess I'm just not hardcore enough anymore. Space Invaders is another cheap game I'll never buy. Borrowed it from a friend, played 10 minutes, and I'm pretty satisfied with never playing it again.

And I love shmups, so I don't see where the "if you love one you love the other" thing comes from.

And why would anyone mention ICO, a game that actually has good gameplay, style, and a decent story in the same post as PN03?

I'm beginning to think that if a game is only worthy based on it's dollar value, it's not worth my time period. There are all these games that are "Great for cheap" and last a total of a few hours or something that just aren't actually worth purchasing. THat's all I got from this thread so anyone else trying to make a point, failed.

I'm not going to say PN03 is bad, but I just want to say that I've probably put 10 minutes into the game, like a year ago, and haven't touched it since, BUT I have put the time in that it is reqired to beet GunGrave OD on Kick Ass.

The Capcom Five was supposed to be Nintendo's first step into really revitalizing their ways and attracting all sorts of third parties to the GameCube. Resident Evil 4 was supposed to be the game that made bajillions of people buy the system. Resident Evil exclusivity was paired in with RE4, too.

Okay, what happened? The series withered on the vines as PS2 people just went and played something else (Like, erm, Devil May Cry). The games were ported to PS2. There was little to no interest in these games on GameCube. Im sure other third party developers looked at what happened and vowed not to ever think about going exclusive with Nintendo ever again. It did both companies more harm than good.

I love RE4, but Viewtiful Joe has more depth to the combat, better puzzles, and still maintains a much faster pace than RE4. Not trying to take away from RE4, but that's why I like Viewtiful Joe better.
