Official Tokobot thread

The PSP gets some Pikmin style gameplay in the form of Tokobot, a strategy adventure from Tecmo. The art style on this looks very charming so far and it's been announced for North America. Sweet. We could definitely use a unique game like this to break up the PSP doldrums, and the sooner the better.

I doubt it will be as good as Pikmin but it looks neat and it's one of the few PSP games that interests me.

Yea, I have noticed alot of the PSP games are rehashes of there bigger, better console brothers. I think this looks to be a cool game, maybe more like a mix of Pikmin and the Jak series. Let's hope it turns out great!

Either way, more and more it looks like the PSP is gonna need more steak this fall to combat the DS. I'm sure a lot of peeps will buy GTA but Mario Kart, Animal Crossing online and Mario Kart online not to mention a new SMB are an impressive line up. No RPGs announced for NA yet either. For having such a great launch, the PSP sure is having trouble pumping out fresh games these days.

Yea, I do think alot of DS games are sucky, but hell, I want to get that SMB if it comes out. Not to mention Nintendogs, Wario Ware, and some others. PSP has alot of great things about it, but if they keep making rehashes of old games ('cept Medevil, I want to play that one ^.^), they won't beat Nintendo in the portable gaming area.

This game definitally looks awesome. I want to see more.

That first screen had my jaw dropping, as the art style looked really fresh compared to Pikmin's. Then the succeeding screens just made it look like Pikmin with jaggies. Either way, it should be a really solid game. It's hard for it not to be with a Pikmin-style base.

Though Tecmo's upcoming Tokobot isn't quite ready for hands-on just yet, we got a look at a new trailer and had the chance to talk to producer Keisuke Kikuchi about the unique game. The recently announced title puts you in control of a young archaeologist named Bolt, who sets out to save the world with the aid of a gaggle of mysterious robots he discovers in some ancient ruins. While Kikuchi-san couldn't spill the beans on everything about the upcoming game, he did reveal a few choice bits.

At present, it sounds as though you'll be able to roll with a posse of bots that'll run eight deep. You'll have the ability to switch them into three formations that will vary based on your location and needs. So far, we've seen the little guys lining up to form a makeshift ladder for Bolt to climb, wings for him to traverse chasms, and a tight circular formation around him that lets him get past potentially bot-maiming hazards.

However, the most impressive thing we've seen so far is the special Voltron-like combining of Bolt's robot minions into a powerful gestalt. We got to see one of the creations, which was a massive lance-wielding, knight-looking robo that appeared to be pretty tough. In the case of that particular robot, Bolt was able to ride on its shoulder as it zipped about. Kikuchi-san revealed that the various combination robots will have unique attributes, and the ability to make those combination bots will come from blueprints you'll find in your adventure.

Our look at the game gave us a better idea of the art style. Bolt's world of ruins appears to have a distinctly disheveled and blocky look to it, at least from what we've seen so far. The game uses a bright color palette and features clean character design. In some ways, it looks to share the same spirit as Sony's Ape Escape, with the tiny bots replacing the monkeys here (not a bad substitution, in our opinion).



What heartless bastard wouldn't love a bunch of little robots?
While our gander at Tokobot was all too brief, we did think that it is looking like a breezy action game with a good amount of personality. We're especially anxious to see how all the different gameplay elements will meld together in the final game. Tokobot is currently slated to ship this fall for the PSP. Look for more on the game in the coming months.

I never played Monster Rancher, which one would you say is a good one to start with? I figure in case I ever play Capcom's Monster Hunter it might be a good 'warm up' to a genre I have not tried yet.

And I wish Tokobot was out right now, would make a very nice game for this summer.

Tecmo is my favorite developer right now. (Namco is a close second, but they've been off of their game lately). I'm glad to see them doing something original on the PSP.

This looks pretty co.... oh wait....Tecmo....oh well.

On the one hand, I really like the sound of this game and am looking forward to a reason to use my PSP. On the other, I'd love to see a proper console version of this.

About time someone cloned Pikmin. I doubt Nintendo will make another anytime soon.

The new video features a lot of exploration and enemy fights in the ruins (check out that kick ass grappling hook move, the propeller jump and the sweet combo/transform robot with machine gun and using the 'bots to turn giant gears) Releases in the U.S. November 29. Can't wait.

Also, I can't believe it is almost 4 months since i started this thread, where does the time go?

It has some kind of whimsical Tail Concerto/MMLegends look to it, too. Anything that reminds me of those games makes me happy. Well, since those two games only remind me of each other.

Hot damn. They should make it for a piece or hardware I already own instead of a portable I have no use for. I especially liked the fights since the platforming seemed a little too easy, though that might just be the first level.

Matt Leone from 1up has had some time to play the game. Says the Tokobots and enemies are varied nicely and the platforming-puzzler mix seem solidly executed so far. Only main gripe as of now is that it can be easy to lose a Tokobot when jumping a gap, ect. But since the game seems to encourage careful managing anyways it may not be too big of a deal. Oooh. More MML vibe. I'm in love so far. It seems to going on quite a different path than Pikmin.

GameSpot has a second, longer trailer up that is much, much better than the first trailer was. :) It shows considerably more gameplay, specifically more of the platforming gameplay, which looks much better than I thought it would be. I thought the first trailer was good, but this sold the game for me.

And yeah, watching the new trailer I got much more of a MML/Tail Concerto vibe, artistically, which is quite alright by me.

Whoooo! I was hoping someone here would get it early, I didn't want to wait until the reviews were posted online. :) Probably won't arrive till Tuesday here but I will be on it. My PSP is in desperate need of an epic platformer and I have been waiting for this game since summer.

This game and I seem like we would get along very well. It's a shame I doubt I can justify that PSP any time soon.

Carrie Gouskos from Gamespot gives it an 8.2 "Great"

She says although it's a bit too linear at times and needs to be longer, the Tokobots and their multiple joint attacks make the game very memorable, boss battles are nicely varied since you have to subtly figure out the right combination to kill them, and says overall it's much better than other been-there-done-that platformers.

I'll take it with a grain since IIRC Parish isn't always overly fond of "old school" actioners to begin with. Plus, the 1up 'n EGM crew sure seem to be forgiving of "poor/cheap" control and "unoriginal/tedious" elements in other action games. *cough GTA LC cough* Plus, the IGN review states that falling off platforms due to the secondary/fixed camera mode happens but that such cases are "rare" and you only lose a bit of energy although your progress gets shaken up a bit of course.

So hopefully this will be a solid purchase (whenever the stores here finally get it).

Something about Tokobot gives me the same vibe I got from Mischief Makers which was underratted but is now one of my favorite games.

Yeah, while i do like to read Parish's reviews, him hating something doesn't mean i will. I was still kind of disappointed to see him rate it so low, since it looked like it was right up his alley.

I called Gamestop today and had to repeat what i wanted 3 times before they said, "Taco bot? Oh. We don't have it yet." :| Tomorrow... I'll get pizza and hopefully Tokobot.

I left my psp off for a few months and when i turned it on, the battery wouldn't charge anymore. I didn't really care, but i couldn't update the system to play Namco Battle Collection. Why do you have to have a full charge AND have the system plugged in? That was irritating.

Cheaper than 30, I am thinking $15 perhaps!

Yea, the battery doesn't hold a charge at all, I wanted to play some RR a while back, but the battery was dead so I just so "screw you little psps!" and left it.

Well, finally got the game and I love it. I am about 1 hour in (Damper Rock ruins) and am having a blast. It really is like a bit of Mario 64 meets Pikmin in a high-tech victorian/steampunk setting. Graphics are beautiful and the game has excellent presentation (the Canewood labs' crew and the villains are some of the nicest character art I have seen since Joker Jun's 'Laputa style' work in Progear) and a personality all its own. Music ranges from nice orchestral to a mix of boppin' 'saturday morning cartoon' style music which has a fun sort of "smart alecky" feel to the background vocals.

Control is well done. Using the 'bots to form up, latch/climb and attack is VERY intutive and very enjoyable, the anlog nub works fine with the game. Only "cheap" deaths I have experienced so far were a few times early on where I was testing the limits of the game and was dumb enough to think I could make a jump over a ravine without having to use the 'Bots. But it was a small ravine! :p

Sometimes of course you lose a few 'Bots when going over a ridge/wall/obstacle but it's usually not frustrating (so far) and you can just use the radar to call them back if they fall into a pit. The game enncourages you to pick up your "strays" which is OK by me.

First boss battle was great even if a bit too easy. You fight a big 'bot with springy arms who runs around the room. You have to wait till he tires himself out then you use your "spin formation" to hit him.

Unfortunately I did have to update my firmware (criminy, Sony cut me a break will ya???....). But when I owned Battlefront II for awhile last month I just used the downgrader which works fine (refer to Bandit's PSP tutorial thread).

Anyways, listen to James! Buy it. Very fun platformer and it feels worth the wait so far.

I read the Fatal Frame guy directed this. Could he have gotten further away in game styles? This looks mighty tasty regardless.

The camera hurts it the most. I'm loving it too, but i think a little more polish would've pushed it a long way. It's soooo freakin' Megaman Legends, too. I keep expecting to hear Roll talking to me. If there were voices, no other voice would be right for girl whatsername.

Definitely. No hate here. It's a fun game with tons of great ideas.

Oddly enough, I didn't really have an issue with the camera. I eventually got to the point where clicking the left shoulder button was almost automatic, and used that to point the camera where I wanted while rotating to face where I wanted to be. After Death Jr, my expectations for a PSP game's camera are nonexistent.

Bah. People have wanted a "better camera" since Mario 64 even. It's all relative. Like you said, L trigger balances it out fine.

And I'd have to say in my case, after Sonic Adventure 2's abysmal "camera," my expectations were pretty lenient. Just gimme a camera that doesn't make me angry! :p

Ugh, what's with the love for MML? I played through the first (somehow) then abandoned Tron Bonne half-way through due to extreeeeeeeeeeeme boredom and will never touch MML2. I may even sell all three which is *crazy* talk for Compass. The games were the definition of 32-bit 3D blandness. (to me... sorry, Finchle).

:( MML 2 was where it got good, but i really really liked Tron Bonne... ;_; What about Tail Concerto, the mysterious lost brother of MML?
Tokobots just has the atmosphere and characters that are similar to the MML/TC series.

Played a little more. I really want a rotating camera where i have to judge distance. Sometimes it looks like you're close enough to latch the Tokobots to a block, but you're not quite, so you have to reposition youself a few times. I also have a problem with going places that i'm not supposed to. Whenever i see an empty ledge or an area off the path, i want to go there. In the rare instances that the game lets me, the camera goes berserk and i get the insides of Tokoboy.
It doesn't ruin the game, but imagine... IMAGINE!!!!!!! Also, it would've been nice if the areas were a little more open.

Been playing around in the second ruins temple today, lots of block stompin' enemy killin' fun. But I am hungering to get a nifty Kara Kuri combo.

Imagines Finch returning to the store wearing a little Sanrio 'froggy suit' and carrying a flame thrower back pack as he smiles ominously.

I am really having a blast with this game. I'm in the third level and the puzzles are getting kinda hard but it's a really rewarding feeling when you finally beat them, and that goes the same with the bosses as they get a little harder untill you figure out there pattern. I'm also enjoying the little mini-games you get with certain tokobot combinations like the mono train, this thing was whooping my ass but I couldn't stop playing. I kinda wish there were more save points though.

I just got Samurai Hover and the Crane, both kick. The Samurai 'bot is great, using that kitana to melee enemies is a lot of fun.

I want this game so bad. I don't like neglecting my PSP, but there is nothing I want to play on it besides this and maybe Popolocrois.

But I need to wait until after Christmas to get it :( Hopefully it won't be sold out forever by then.

OK, for the past two days I have been trying to figure out the crane puzzle in the Damper Rock ruins and I just cannot solve it. The only clue I have is the hologram with a green triangle and Ruby says "...connects the three points?" But the wire grid you place the blocks on is a mess. I have tried to arrange the blocks every way I can and I have no idea what I am supposed to do. Can someone give me a hint on this?

You're going to kick yourself when you solve it, because it's actually pretty simple.

Draw the triangle on a piece of paper, just a quick sketch. Notice that the three corner points correspond to three of the ends of the tangle of lines. Now pick three blocks and connect them all and you're good.

Ok has anyone gotten to the second fight with Flames, holy shit she wont stay still long enough for me to hit her, each one of her attacks takes like 3 hearts, and one of the times I did hit her I still got a heart taken away, fuck. I don't want the solution but I just want to know if anyone else is as frustrated as I am. This game is only gonna get harder to, but it's still sweet as hell.

Beat the lazer-eye puzzle last night, love this game.

I fought Flames today, very fun battle, much better than the first boss. Switching between the two required formations worked nicely and she took a lot of hits before going down.

Also, I twice posted a positive "reader review" under Parish's review calling him out on his complaints (especially his gripe with how the 'bots break their chain if you don't do the spin properly, I said 'Maybe the game is encouraging you to do the combo properly instead of babying you through the game and letting you simply melee enemies like other platformers do?'), and basically everything else I have said here. Maybe they are having issues with the server/database but t has disappeared both times I have posted it. Funny. I think I'll go post it again.

I also would like to take issue with Parish's complaint that the robots' chain breaks sometimes when fighting enemies. Of course if you don't initiate the spin properly this is true. But that is pretty weak complaint if you are trying to spin them just as an enemy is about to walk into you. The game encourages you to do the combos the right way instead of simply melee'ing the enemies with too much ease like other platformers.

Just got the bomb launcher and spin glide, the game just keeps throwing out so much variety and new things to do. 2 puzzles I loved were the steam valves and the giant 'simon says' game :D I am also impressed at how there is almost no loading in the game which is always a big plus.

Just got the train upgrade, that monorail ride is soooo fun! :)

I'm about where you are. I play Tokobot just a little at a time. That jumping part where you had to float down with the spinny tokobot thing was annoying, but elsewise, it's beans.

Looks less like Pikmin and more like Tronne Bonne IMHO.

Anyone else play the Grinder Valley temple yet? That place is tough so far. The conveyor belt with the smashing blocks was pure evil. The drag/light-spark puzzle afterwards was a nice little test of reflexes too. Hammer upgrade was well worth it though.

Yeah I got there, and it was at that point in the game that I wished that I could save it anytime. The light-spark maze thing took me a crap load of times to beat because I thought they expected you to move the spark with that moving part of the puzzle and not just go across as soon as you can. Now I'm leaving the temple, and I'll just leave it at that. Tell me when you get to that part.

I'm trying to complete a timed puzzle where you have 5 minutes to complete it. I'm stuck at a part in a room with a button. when you hit the button 2 columns show up and start to drop, correlating to the time you have to complete the puzzle. there is also a picture in the center of the room. After hitting the button 4 blocks appear which have pieces of the picture on them. I assume you are to pull the blocks on top of the picture in the center of the room so that they match up and make the picture. The only thing is, the time you have to complete this is no where near enough time. i can barely get 2 blocks into place. has anyone passed this part? how do you complete it?

It's funny you mention that because just the other day they had a bazaar on the base I'm deployed to right now and they had them for like 200 dollars a piece, which is fucked since everything else they have at this place is sometimes as much as %50 off of what you would pay retail. So I'm trying to figure out who the hell is buying these things for this much for them to think they can sell them for that much, the bastards. Oh yeah, can't use ebay out here, so I'm gonna have to wait till I get home.

To stay on topic I'm still trying to get the hell out of this damn castle and it is really kicking my ass, crap.

OK, I am stumped. I am in Grinder Valley temple. I am in the room which had all the little green 2-legged robots not long after you get the Hammer. There is a power switch needed to open the door in this room. You have to swing from some bars hanging from the ceiling. I can get to the last bar fine with 4 'bots, but I can't swing onto the magnetic rail attached to the wall itself where you need to climb to get the power switch. Can this really be done with 4 'bots?

Thanks. If it helps jog your memory, there is a wall. On top of the wall there is a platform with a power switch that needs to be stomped so the door in the room will turn orange/on. The wall has a magnetic rail but since I have 4 bots it is too high to be reached. There are bars to swing from the ceiling, after swinging on the last magnetic bar I still cannot reach the rail which is attached to the wall below.

After reading through this thread several different times I have decided that Tokobot will be my next PSP purchase. :chunobi:

Good move. It will keep you more busy than any other recent portable platformer. The puzzles are not ultra tough but I have owned it almost a month and am still trying to beat it. I am also looking forward to the timed challenges.

oh i'm pretty sure i remember now. you can do it. this took me a while too. It's all about timing. you can make it to the wall with 4 bots. the best way to do it, i've found, is to jump on the first swing. you'll get better at it as you practice more. i'm pretty sure thats what i'm thinking of. i'll go back later tonight to make sure.

Hmmm. I dunno. Still not working.

edit: OK, i seem to be getitng a bit closer to the magnet. Will keep trying.

I finally got around to beating Grinder Valley today. Second battle with Flames was intense. Her new drill 'bot "Lucy" was a pain to keep up with. As chessmen said, her 3 way blast attack was vicious. So I mainly held off and would attack her from behind when she occasionally paused while in tank mode. Then I decided to have some sadistic fun and while she was on her last energy bar, I waited for her to rear up into her "blast mode" again and then switched into the Samurai and gave her one sweet death blow. :D That felt good after getting killed by her more than a few times and was a nice release after the many vicious platform puzzles in the stage before. I also liked the trash talk between her and Ruby. "Fuel says you are so stupid any agent you use doesn't stand a chance." :lol: Oh, and having 6 Tokobots again instead of 4 is soooo much better.

Now I am on Kingdom of Crank and I LOVE it. This stage is so much cooler than Grinder valley. I love the slight Italian Villa/Davinci era feel of the city. Right now I am partway into sneaking through the underground canal on the way to the next Castle. The platform/block challenges in the sewer are a little more forgiving than the previous stage. I chuckled when Dr. Canewood warned me not to get caught to prevent "an international incident." Ya gotta dig how the game presents its own little self contained world and buys into it with both cheese 'n charm. :D

OK, not to drag the thread down, but if you want to see how bored, cynical and out of touch some of EGM's peeps are, look no further than their review of Tokobot. I will summarize it here:

Christian: 5.5 Christian says Tokobot is a "very good idea" as a game but cops out and whines about the difficulty. Yet, he also says the puzzles are simple. Hmmm. Last time I checked some of them were simple and some were plenty tough.

He also says the control is "sluggish." As I said in my reader review here, the control is very good. Use of the analog nub is IMHO smoothest I have seen on the PSP to date. Losing one or two stray 'bots is easily overcome by holding down the radar sensor. Yes, the camera needs some work.

Bryan 4.0 "Every environment is eye high in platforming segments that are frustrating death traps rather than challenging tests of agility." Wahhhh! Wow, sounds like Bryan got his booty served.

Jeremy 6.0 Just a small recap of what he already said on 1Up. FWIW though, I now think his opinion is far more balanced than the latter two.

There is also some lame griping about "the robots are too unresponsive." Which translates to "I didn't perform the combo properly and got my butt whooped by a scrub enemy which made me mad."

shrugs Oh well. That's what I get for reading EGM I guess. Sure am glad I don't spend money on it.

So for anyone reading this thread, if you like unique platformers and a decent challenge, please do ignore EGM's crap review and buy the game.

I read that the other day. You think that's bad, you should see how completely they missed the boat on Electroplankton. They couldn't even tell the difference between a game (Tokobot) and a toy (Electroplankton).

I know, I just read their Electroplankton "review." Sad. I need to put this magazine down. Now. Tosses it back over to co-worker's desk. Interestingly enough, Parish's review on 1UP for it is a muuuuch more comprehensive read and praises it for being what it is, a "music toy." Ironic how much better their online affiliate can be at times than their own crap "capsule" writing.

I've understood how to make him falling (spin Bolt with his Tokobots), but, once this robot is down, and before he raise again, what should I do with it :wtf: ?!?

Once you make him fall down I think you just need to put your 'bots into "line" formation then hit him.

edit: He might have a button on his chest or head that you need to aim for.

I've finally found the solution by myself, sorry !
...and I'm blocked later in game :lol: ...no pb, I'll solve this one (hope to).

That first battle with Fuel was ace. Now I am bactracking to get the pass codes. Are there 2 passcode slates per stage? Assuming so since I found 2 in Valve Air and does not seem to be any more places for them so far.

edit:

NM: when the radar turns blue that means you have found all the pass codes for that area.

Forgot to add, cheers on the nice HGM Tokobot review, James. Good read. I just wish your "second opinions" were longer than one line ya know? :p

Not my choice. If it was me the 2O would be an EGM-review style paragraph.

The Tokobot review wasn't my best. I was sick all November and can see the effects in everything I wrote. But thanks anyway. :)

Finally cut through my backlog and beat the game today. The final battle with Fuel was kinda wonky but the fight with Zero was ace. Very cool finale. The dialog was in hilariously bad rare form though. Ruby: "Fuel, wake up! 'The Power' you were after was actually a karakuri robot designed to destroy the world! Fuel: " :eek: " :lol: If anyone has any questions about beating the final boss, lemme know. Now I have time attack mode to dig into. And in closing, my main gripe with the game is not enough of the transformations were well implemented. ie: Why not have a sword duel with another robot using the samurai? Overall however, very fun though somewhat frustrating platformer containing solid puzzles and great boss battles. Can't wait for Daxter next month which looks promising as well. Little change ups in the genre like the Tokobot system and Daxter's pesticide/hover moves are just the sort of things platformers need.

I just picked up a PSP last week and this is really the only thing I've sunk time into (I played a few rounds of Alpha 3 and hated every minute of it with the PSP controller).

I like the game so far, but my biggest gripe is that Bolt feels so freaking slow. He just trots around the area like he has all day.

I am right now in the second level with that damn crane solution. I know what the right connection pieces are, but I need red energy to turn into the crane. >_<;;

Anyway, neat game so far, but I'm definitally feeling the itch to grap Mega Man X as soon as possible for the PSP.

Daxter looks mighty tasty too. I think I'll have to give that a go soon too.

Yeah, he feels a bit slow but as long as you initiate the joint actions proper and don't rush things you should be good to go. There is a level (minor spoiler).....where you have to use only 4 Tokobots. Now that hurt. I will say this, if you don't like hard jumps, then you will not like Tokobot. It is an old school, tough as nails platform jumper in 3D (if you can take Grinder Valley temple's obstacles, then you can handle the rest of the game). But when you have a good number of 'bots and get the hitting, latching ect. down it really "clicks" and IMHO always feels rewarding to beat a difficult section or puzzle.

Also, you will not be disappointed with Mega Man X, excellent remake.
