The Bible Belt

This may be because I just got up, but I just had a little thought (haha, Iron thinking lolers) that the reason that so many of the southern TNLers have a distaste for big government is because we live in the Bible Belt, a place where a person can be fined, ticked, or even put in jail over "moral" things that most normal (not super orthodox Christians) people don't have a problem with.

I think a lot of the negative feelings about government come from having to deal with so much bullshit from our local government.

Does anyone else have an opinion on my theory, or the Bible belt itself?

When you start mixing morals and government there is always going to be a problem.

Just because something makes other people uncomfortable doesn't mean there should be a law against it. Like the whole "sex toys are illegal" bullshit in Alabama. People's sex lives are their own damn business. Do any of the politicians down there actually believe people are being any less perverted without access to these things. Of course not, I'm pretty sure the idea of using a cucumber started somewhere where dildos weren't readily available.

In short, Neo Nazi's may be a bunch of assholes, but they still have federally protected rights as citizens of this country. I may not like that fact, but I can't rightfully call myself an American if I start thinking people should be treated differently because of what they believe or think. As long as they aren't harming anybody around them I see no reason for government to step into people's private lives.

EDIT: In addition it seems very stupid and hypocritical to hold people to such high moral standards that you've gotta make a law for them and yet knowing full well that most people aren't going to abide by them. You'd think Orthodox Christians would know this with the whole "saved by grace and not by works" theology. Then again women still wear hats to church in the south so maybe not.

See it's shit like that, that drives me nuts when I deal with people not from here that are apathatic about the way our government is.

Example: Like when Jouste said "he doesn't have anything to hide" so he doesn't care about all the things we are losing for safety. I just find that kind of thinking to be crazy and stupid. Because I live in an area where most people have something to hide, and most of TNL would have something to hide here.

How many of you would get a 250 fine for owning beer and another 250 fine for owning wiskey right now?

When people don't care what you choose to do with your life as long as you aren't harming anyone else, then naturally you feel as though you have nothing to hide because you aren't accountable to anyone but your own conscience. And most people don't listen to that anyway.

People who are willing to sacrifice general freedom for "safety" demonstrate their general stupidity. Fuck that noise. If Americans value their freedom so fucking much they should be willing to fight the right battles for it. The government is not going to hem me into some little box and expect me to accept "It's for your own good" as a rational reason for me to sit and twiddle my thumbs while they fuck up America's reputation even further.

Is America any safer thanks to Bush and his "Keep my oil backers happy" war? The fact that London has been victimized emphatically says no. Bin Laden is still laughing at us and we are still at major risk for another attack on American soil. If yet another attack happens on Bush's watch, I will be all ears to hear what bullshit explanation he and Cheney try to feed the American public on the obviously failed "War on Terror".

America needs to gets out of the oil business.

Eh, I already have a really good understanding of it. Despite being slim, good looking, and from a fairly wealthy family (for this town) I was single most of highschool for that reason. It is hard to get a date in a town that revolves around church when you don't go to church. I was always too bad, or too good. To evil for the church girls, but since I didn't beat up old women in the park, none of the girls who wanted to give BJs to piss off their parents cared about me either. =\

What's funny is that now that they've turned 18 most of those church girls are probably playing the whore for every Tom, Dick and Harry with a fat wallet and all those bad girls are probably little angels now.:lol:

It isn't even funny how true that is for southern college life. While living in my last dorm, the guys that usally talked shit to me about being white were usally outside becuase 1) the cameras on the inside of the building can see drug deals, and 2) stupid white girls who want the black dong. It was just crazy how much those girls dug that stuff, fucking crazy. One guy fucked up cheeted on one of them though, and she found out. It was really funny coming out of the dorm at 7 am to find someone's car with the wind shield broken out and dirty tampons and condoms stuck to the paint.

You must live in the most fucked up county ever. Even though Dallas is a dry county, they're not going to pull you over and confiscate your beer. Titty bars are a dime a dozen around here as well.

They really can't look in your fridge, unless they have a search warrant. Legally, you don't have to open the door, unless they have a search warrant either. You could step outside your door and they wouldn't have the right to enter your home.

The same with your car. If you put your alcohol in the trunk, they have no rights to search the trunk, without a proper means. Even if you had the beer sitting in the back seat, within a paper bag; they aren't legally allowed to search the vehicle, if they pulled you over for something else.

They didnt sleep with you because of your self-loathing combined with your blame-the-girl attitude. Everybody does it when theyre frustrated about the opposite sex but thats really all there is to it. There's plenty of people at any given place that would sleep with any given person.
