I think the book felt fast because there were too many things she was obligated to either have happen or to tie up (the first hundred pages have a lot of that), and then it ends fairly suddenly without a nice sense of closure that each of the other books have, but of course the pattern of the books is kind of broken now.

Great book, much better than 5. I'm with Frito, I'm happy Harry wasn't a total DB, thank god she dumped that shit after 5. I thought the end was really well written and it sets up 7 to be the best one in the series.

I really, really liked this one. It probably was my favorite. But I really, really hated the end. Not because it was badly written, but because what I know had to happen did. As the first 2/3 of the book seemed much more happy and formulaic, the last 1/3 was fast paced and very dark. Perhaps too dark for young children, like some reviews have suggested.
Now to talk more candidly about that huge spoilerific...
chapter 27 and beyond...
I knew Dumbledore had to die.It was too obvious. But part of me thought that JK Rowling wouldn't go for the obvious pick. But since she did, who finished him off surprised me greatly. Actually, not so much, considering the second chapter's events. But just how quick and effortless it was. Snape was cold and merciless, not even giving Dumblebore a reason for his treason. Very shocked at that.
The last chapter almost had tears in my eyes. There was some beautiful imagery conjured up. But at the same time, it seemed too brief. Wasn't Dumbledore one the wizaring worlds's greatest wizards? No big eulogy from the ministry of magic or any other big wig wizard? That seemed wierd. I hope they remedy that somewhat for the movies.
And at the end, when Harry tells Ginny that they shouldn't see each other anymore, that was very Spider Man-esque. Put a smile on my face.
But overall, I was extremely pleased with this one, and as soon as I closed the book, wished I had the next one. I guess that's a good of a sign as any that it was worth my money.
Children books that are over 800 pages long. I'd be willing to bet Harry Potter's largest audience is older teens and adults. I think a truer classification for these books is light reading for those who don't normally like to read.Quote:

Thank god I avoided all the spoilers that people have been tossing around, because I did not see that ending coming at all, and it blew me away, and I had tears in my eyes during certain parts of the ending. What really hit me hard was the bit about Dumbledore's office in that said "There was now a new image among the previous head masters on the wall, Albus Dumbledore could be seen slumbering peacefully.", I'm paraphrasing that, but it was such wonderful imagery. What a great book, Rowling did an excellent job with this one. I was happy to see that Harry wasn't such an angsty asshole in this, but his obsseive personality did annoy me at times. This is going to make a hell of a movie. I can't wait to see where this goes next, I especially want to know who that mystery man is.
The only person who they have mentioned that fits into the initials is Sirius's brother, Regulus Black. The book says he was offed by the Death Eaters, but something tells me he's still alive and kicking somewhere, if it's indeed him, and will help Harry nuke the remaining 3 Horcruxes. (The cup, the house piece, and the snake) The necklace has probably been destroyed already.Quote:

I saw Dumbledore dying coming, more or less by reading US Today yesterday.
I did not see Snape doing the deed. Nice touch, especially with Dumbledore saying when he does make a mistake, it's usually pretty big and bad.
Best book so far. It almost poked fun at all the boring Ron/Hermione/Harry sitting around and bastardizing Malfoy from the previous books, with Ron and Hermoine, more or less, thinking Harry had gone insane about Malfoy. I called it in book 2, Ginny and Harry hooking up. They'll be back together at the end of book 7, either before the final fight or right after.

Granted, I think the 'X points from Gryffindor' thing, and other Hogwarts house games are annoying and drawn out, not having it around the school wouldn't seem right. IMO, on less stable ground, is that Harry is the last Horcrux. Which makes sense how Harry can speak Parseltongue, and why the Sorting Hat wanted to toss him in Slytherin and other assorted things of how a poster child for goodness can have such evil tendencies.
Also, as probably in the back of everyone's mind, Snape killed Dumbledore because Dumbledore asked him to. Thanks to occulemency (telepathy) in the tower, Dumbledore told Snape to off him, knowing that the poison from the cave was going to do it soon enough anyway. There is an exchange between the two in the woods that Hagrid overhears in book 6, where Snape refuses to do something for Dumbledore. It also explains why Snape deflects Harry's spells, as well as not return fire, and why Snape gets so livid when Harry calls him a coward.
This all makes sense. What better way to get in good with Voldemort than to off his biggest enemy?
What I want to know is - if Horcruxes split a soul in two, then technically, shouldn't the last Horcrux be 1/64 of Voldemort, that being Voldemort himself? If each time is a split in two, then the original part would be 1/2, and the remaining parts 1/2 of what was left and so on.

That's a pretty interesting take on Snape killing Dumbledore too. It explains a lot...I was pretty suprised that Snape did kill him. No spoken words were even said between them, Snape just knocks him off and that's it. It gives further backing to why Dumbledore froze Harry to keep him safe and from interfering. With what we've seen now, Snape is an incredibly powerful wizard and now his motives are completely up in the air. The other Death Eaters tried to take down Harry but Snape kept them from harming him any further. He had plenty of chances to kill Harry himself but saying Voldermort wants to deal with him not only makes sense, but is a good cover as well. It could really go any way. There's more than enough damning evidence against Snape, and then there is that side that wants you to believe he hasn't gone back over. Book 7 has got to be the size of book 5, there is so much to cover.
Regus: From what I gathered he'd be around 24 years old now. In the first book it's mentioned that Dudley gets a Playstation as soon as it comes out. Using that, you can get a rough idea of the timeline. Also, I think Hermonie is Jewish. When Christmas break is about to start (book 2 or something? Can't remember where exactly) Hagrid is talking to her and asks her what she's doing for "her holiday". Christmas is mentioned for everyone else.
Firstly, this is not the best book in the series. Book 3 is. You could consider this to be second best if you thought book 4 was too wordy, but I personally put it behind book five but ahead of books 1 and 2.
3, 4, 5, 6, 2, 1. This one may not have a lot of dead time but it wastes a lot of breath skimming over things and awkwardly deals with things like the quidditch and some of the "romance."
Parts of the book are brilliant though. I really enjoyed Felix Felicis, the bit in the cave, Voldemort's backstory, etc.
I thought the aftermath of dumbledore's death was..unconvincing? Rushed? Emotionally lacking? But I suppose she and her readers were burnt out from book 5 so it's semi-understandable.
The whole book felt like filler to loosely tie the flashback sessions together.
The video-game-quest-hunt the next book is set up to be has me excited though.
I just finished three and am going to start four tonight.
Might as well read this books, JK Rowling is so easy to read even if she over uses deus ex machina, and writes ridiculous plots

Rowling did a great job of making Snape one of those characters that are true 50:50 shots of going good or evil. Even killing one of the primary characters, he could still be deep down good. I wouldn't be surprised if, after redeeming himself, Snape becomes headmaster of Hogwarts. He's extremely smart (the Potion book proves this) and extremely talented (making his own spells and his magic talents like occulmency).

Mundungus is introduced in Order of The Pheonix (which I am re-reading). He is the shady, thieving wizard. At the very beggining, the first chapter, Harry and Dudley are attacked by demetors in a dark alley and Harry fiends them off with a Patronis charm. It turns out that Dumbledore had a squib cat-lady wizard and Mundungus watching after Harry, but Mundungus got a hot tip about some lost caouldrens and left his post, exposing Harry to the Dementors. Mundungus is a member of the order later on in the book, I'll tell more of his role as I read the book if you'd like.
I had the very same idea about Snape killing Dumbledore today, that it does not mean without a doubt that he is a death eater. I mean, it really pissed harry off at Voldemort obviously, just reinforcing his drive to fuck him up bad. Remember Dumbledores last words were "Snape, Please!" (or "Serivus, Please!"), begging for mercy or not? Who knows!

I'm going to have to read this again, but I think its a ruse. Like, Dumbledores not even actually dead. With everyone thinking he is it sets up Snape really well, gives Harry a really good reason to go hunt Voldemort down, and gives him a chance to help Harry without anyone knowing he's still around. I mean if one person in this series can figure out how to cheat death why cant another? Also, since the series is for kids I can't believe that Rowling would send the message that people never deserve a second chance.

The Half-Blood Prince was clearly Snape because of what he says about Potions in the first book. It was just interesting to see where he came up with the name and finding out that he wasn't a pure-blood. Slytherin himself would not like the head of his house being a half-blood. That, unfortunately, lends me to believe that Dumbledore and Snape set up the Obi-Wan for Harry.
EDIT: We'll find out in the next book when Harry receives the memory that Dumbledore left him about all of this stuff. That's what will bring Harry back to Hogwarts.
The bits where Harry and Dumbledore look into the pensieve are really well done and help fill in a whole lot of great missing elements from the prior books. And, as for the biggest surprise of the book:
R.A.B. may not be Regulus. I get the feeling, from Harry's duel with Voldemort at the end of Goblet of Fire, that R.A.B. is a Bryce. Just a small feeling. The evidence does seem to fit Regulus, but you never know.
