Unlike the first Flashback console, this one will actually use Atari 2600 hardware to provide the games, in the form of the 2600 on a chip. The flashback 2 will feature over 40 games, with 7 titles being unreleased and another 7 homebrew. New titles include Yar's Return and Return to Haunted House.

I got some hands-on time with one at the Funspot torunament this year.
Unlike last time the gameplay is spot-on. Pretty impressive set.
I hear you'll be able to hack a 2600 cart port onto this one so you can play any old cart. Good stuff.

I think the point is having an atari 2600 that you don't need to by a bunch of adaptors to get to run on a tv made this decade. I know Radio shack still sells those adaptors, but they're peices of shit and I've been though like 4 of them. I'll pick one of these up, modded, if the price is reasonable.
S-video on a 2600 is just an easy mod. No, you really don't need S-video, but its easier to pull of than a composite mod, so you might as well do the s-vid.
and if anyone says they dont need even a composite mod, they need a smack in the head.

I look forward to the hacks and homebrews. One is Atari Climber, which is Dennis Debro's Climber 5 homebrew which he released last year. Climb up ladders avoiding moving lines ("Girders", hee hee) to get your baseball. There are various fun options such as falling stuff to avoid ... if you remember the LAME 2600 Donkey Kong, this game will probably impress you. The Yar's Revenge sequel is interesting too. I had a bit to do with "Adventure II". It uses Warren Robinett's Adventure engine, but bumps up the memory (I think to 32K, from the original 4K). The designs are a port of my own Atari 5200 homebrew (still not finished yet), which I also call "Adventure II". (another engineer and an artist also are part of our informal team fyi). I have the ROM for it already since I was allowed to test it. Because of my involvement, I'm getting a free Flashback 2 but I think I'd buy it anyway even if not, because it is a 2600-on-a-chip.
Yar's Revenge 2 isn't programmed by Warshaw so my expectations are very low -- especially considering that the original is one of my favorite games ever.

A new line of consoles is coming out, including the Flashback 5.0 (100 games!), and Colecovision and Intellivision (new overlays for each game!) machines! No word on game lists for them so far, but I'll definitely be getting the Coleco one. I've been looking for a machine for some time, and they're insanely priced online. Plus, the controllers from this machine can be used with the original hardware!

They need cartridge slots or at least a way to play roms.
I wonder what the Colecovision one will include. I can picture the Sega stuff because they have licensed to clone machines before and maybe Universal's games but I doubt we will see Nintendo, Activision, and Sierra games. Almost everything on the system was owned by someone other than Coleco.
I think I'm going to have to grab the Coleco as well. It was my first system, but I don't want to get into collecting for it.

That's true. A Coleco machine without Donkey Kong and others wouldn't be the same. This thing better have Venture!

Venture is way too easy on the console. I remember playing the game on my friend's CV and getting bored with it, because I was plowing through the levels like a hot knife through butter.Quote:

The only pre-NES system I've ever owned was an Atari 2600 (or maybe 7800), so I'm interested in the Intellivision and Colecovision ones.

I want the Colecovision, but I remember how painful it was to use that controller. I will probably pass.
Other than it feeling like flimsy garbage, I never had an issue with the Coleco controller. It worked fine, just felt like it could break at any second.
The Super Action controllers were real piles of crap. My friend had two of them that we would use to play the baseball game with. The joysticks would sometimes catch/stick on a corner angle movement and I'd sometimes pinch the skin on my fingers between the 4 cheap triggers in the handle.Quote:

With some Colecovision games, you can have a non-Coleco controller plugged in one slot and start the game up with the other. I think I fucked my control ports by frequently removing and inserting controllers, though. My system doesn't work properly anymore.
I think the CV is better off emulated. It's not like with the Intellivision where more games take advantage of the keypad and overlays well. The keypad on CV doesn't serve much purpose beyond selecting difficulty given that most games are arcade ports.

I never thought I would see Oil's Well getting a re-release anywhere. I played that one a lot on C64. The CV version is almost the same.

This reminds me, I must have found at least 3 of those DK cartridges just lying around random places as a kid. I remember one on the side of the road, and another in the couch cushions of a beachhouse my folks were staying at.
Of course I didn't expect it, but one can dream. It was the only game I had for the thing back in the day, so it's the only one I have a nostalgic attachment to.

I had that one. I wanted them all, but I only had that one because my mom bought it used. IT WAS AWESOME (for the time). I remember it being really bright and colorful and looked awesome with the lights off.
I had the Pac-Man one for a while. I got it from a classmate in exchange for some totally sweet marbles.
