If having assorted bric-a-brac around the house modeled after horror-game accessories excites you (and you live in Japan), you'll be able to reserve the package online starting December 4.

While we're on the subject of dates, Capcom closed their RE5 announcements for today by stating that the title will go on sale March 5 in Japan, a week earlier than previously scheduled -- the rest of the world will still need to wait until March 12, sadly. "I would like to sincerely thank everyone who visited Capcom's booth at the 2008 Tokyo Game Show," producer Jun Takeuchi told Famitsu. "A lot of visitors commented about how they couldn't wait any longer to play the game, which I genuinely appreciated hearing. All of us on the team were inspired by that to cut the remaining development period down...even if it is by only a week!"

It was probably on a 13" B&W SDTV hooked up with RF so he couldn't tell there were two characters on screen.

I'm not sure if you can use a trial code or whatever, but your Xbox is allowed to make 3 or 4 Live accounts with a free one month gold trial. That should guide you through it.

Working fine right now on a US 360. I hear there might be Live maintenance soon tho, wasn't paying attention.

Apparently demos are capable of running off a burned DVD, too, so there will probably be a torrent soon.

Impressions:

It set my default control to control scheme D, the modern FPS style one. lol amurricans

Demo's in full english, Resident Evil 5 title screen.

Game is faster than 4, which is cool. Hits and animations seem to have less weight to them, which isn't. Half the animations seem right out of RE4, only sped up and now kinda eh looking. Whatev.

Level design seems similarly open-ended.

Real-time inventory is slick and tense.

Game is gorgeous.

Sheva doesn't get in the way, and will help Chris a ton when he's down/limping.

Similar to RE4, I got rocked by the first big surprise special kinda enemy. Seems kinda on the same level as RE4's difficulty, here's hoping they compensate a bit and design assuming people have played RE4.

Only played one of two scenarios, waiting for the girlfriend to finish the second one.

Forgot about this, downloading it now.

DLed and burned this. It ran just fine. I didn't far though. The big dude with the axe killed me. I'll be doing some split-screen co-op tomorrow, then some online tomorrow night.

Any suggestions for getting this to run? I burned it the content folder to the disc and my Xbox was just like yeah I don't know what this is fuck off.

Insert the disc and check "Demos" in your game library. Should show up.

Yeah I would agree with Tain and Bacon. Good demo, its RE4 in Africa, with a partner, still not sure I like that. Some parts of the partner stuff in the demo were a bit annoying, I'm not sure I could deal with that for a full game.

Does the demo have to be burned in the layers of folders it unpacks in or can I just burn the file as a data dvd?

It defaults to D, cuz it thinks that's what us western Gears players want, but in reality it's just a really, really shitty halfway point control scheme that makes no sense.

Type A is the same as RE4, though, and it works great.

It defaults to D for you, it defaults to A for me, I think it's because you suck.

But still, even the RE4 controls are pretty shitty now.

I'm not really sure what you could change short of shaking up the mechanics and turning it into Gears or Dead Space or something. It's one of those cases where it's a very specific kind of scheme for a very specific kind of game.

Dead Space controls would work great.

I switched the controls to A before playing after seeing this thread, and while they might of felt natural if I had just come from playing RE4, it's a huge step back after playing so much GoW/GoW2. I'll take the watered down Gears setup in D, at least I can strafe a bit. I don't mind that the movement retains some of it's clunky RE roots, but some sort of dodge, even if it was just a lean to the side, would have been nice.

Split Screen Co-op is some kinda bullshit, it uses like half the screen for both players combined. Unless you have a super big television then it's stupid.

Type D controls are where it's at.

This game is the hotness, Cap and I just did both scenarios in online co-op.

Yeah, good stuff. I really like type D controls. The thing i was having trouble was remembering to press LB+RT to knife, but that's just something that will come from playing more. Pretty cool game, and co-op should be good stuff. Plenty of Holy SHIT! moments where you were stuck in a corner and had to have your partner come bail you out. Judging by the demo, I'd say the gameplay is a step in the right direction.

Nope.

I was surprised that a burned demo on a cd worked on a stock system too- although after a few plays it stopped reading the disc. I made another but haven't tried it out yet.

I think it's a YMMV thing. My disc ran great sometimes and gave me errors other times. Sometimes it would be at the beginning, and other times right at the end. Still, it's enough to convince me I'll be buying it day one.

Yeah. Although I have read that a dvd works better.

I got it to work only after using a DVD-RW.

I just put it on a dvd and it does run better. The xbox no longer sounds like it's having a heart attack and it loads a little quicker.

So far it seems like Sheva's actually fairly helpful.

I dunno about that. I'd be far happier if there was some way to control what Sheva takes. It's annoying to have her run around and grab the herbs and grenades, then play inventory shuffle to get what I want. She seems reasonably competent in combat, but I did lose on my first attempt at the shanty town when she got chainsawed because she wasn't smart enough to run like hell.

I've heard some complaints about her, but hopefully they have some time to touch it up maybe. I only played coop, and although RE has always bee about playing solo, I think I may be going the Gears route and running through on coop my first run.

Well, you want her to have the herbs. She's good with healing. She's far from perfect, but compared to the disasters with RE 0 and 4 it's a marked improvement.

edit- yeah Cap, I just hope split screen is decent- if it is my roommate and I will probably go through the first time co-op as well.

Got it working perfect on a standard dvd+r and played it 8 times (4x each stage) with no problems. Thanks tain and the bunch.
It's a blast for an RE fanatic like myself, though it is very RE 4.5 feeling.

Agreed, the heal AI is pretty good from what I have experienced. Rarely too early if at all.

So one of my friends gave me this demo on saturday and it's ok, but being the fact I didn't play RE4 i have to say this IS NOT Resident Evil... No zombies just parasitic assholes? Why do they throw so many enemies at you and give you shit for ammo? Why the fuck does the characters move so slow? Yeah I know there is a run button, but why the fuck is there a run button and not a run all the time? I dunno I would rather have a game that's like the old RE games even with the new gameplay, but just in some kinda of zombie infested setting where you have to solve puzzles and conserve ammo, not this new run and gun not Resident Evil stuff...

I tried this out at a buddies house using the default controls, and I like how the character handles a lot better than in RE4. I did have to turn up the aim speed, though.

I liked the partner AI, mostly, but the greedy bitch needs to stop taking all my loot.

It's all about mastering the basics. You get just what you need to survive -- that is RE -- and that's why 4 was so good. Quick turn to get out of tight situations, leg shots + sweet hand-to-hand attack, and knife. Ammo is only really necessary for the heavy hitters like that chainsaw dood. And of course they took a page from Gears and gave us the boot stomp -- though it should make them explode or something -- doesn't have the impact as it does in Gears.

As for the lady friend -- I stole all her shit right off the bat, gave her the sniper rifle in shantytown and stuck her on the roof for cover fire while I shot people in the legs and uppercut them - very nice. Can you actually kill the chainsaw maniac? Cause on my first try I ran out of ammo and then got decapitated :(

I also thought he moved a little slow, but the controls are very responsive. I would like to be able to give the A.I. better directions -- like use the grenades I freaking gave you and blow something up. But she's good for picking up all the loot I'm too lazy to get (and then I just steal it from her).

I do have to say that those 2 levels are fun, but they didn't feel as RE to me -- I too miss the zombies, but these guys are more of a challenge. I hope there are some dark, spooky levels -- too much sunshine... though the environments were nicely detailed.

Hope to see return of creepy merchant and an online co-op mercenaries mode...

Use the explosive barrels and grenades first. Then hit him with sniper rounds to the face and punch him afterwards. He takes a crazy amount of damage but goes down eventually.

Also be on the lookout for the transformer by the stairs. Shoot it to bring it down on him. You can also keep shooting it to stun him repeatedly.

I beat him by running in and punching him every time he was stunned. It worked eventually.

Unless Gears came out a decade earlier than I think it did, RE had that first.

I've owned RE 4 since about the time it came out and I told myself I'll play through it before I play RE 5 and by that time RE 5 will be cheap enough to consider buying.

And you are dumb for thinking that... I bought the game never got around to playing it. News of RE5 came around and I told myself I'll finish RE4 before I buy RE5 and being the fact that I haven't play a 3 year old game to date, by the time I do get around to playing it RE5 will be cheap.

There wasn't another game even close to RE4's level of quality last generation, so anything else you played was a mistake by comparison. Go fix that mistake. It's more important than posting.

It was a good game but c'mon now.

People tend to only notice the control improvements over RE1-3, and not the fact that it's a pretty awkward game compared to other third person action games.

I see the new RE games as a different series, for all intents and purposes, like how Metal Gear and MGS are two different series.

I did put up my list in that thread. I didn't care that the final list didn't look like mine, I was agreeable to most of the games on the list, and I was agreeable to Resident Evil 4 being the top game (although it wasn't my pick for the top spot), but the order/ranking was just awful. I also don't think Jet Grind Radio was top 20, let alone top 10.

I agree that it is a really different series and I would to see them revisit old school zombies, but as long as they keep making the series get better, it doesn't really matter...

My take is that (and this hold true with series like Fatal Frame) that limiting controls is part of the game. Even in 5 you still can't jump etc. but they give you just what you need within the confines of the game, nothing more. Though they make improvements, such as the weapons quick switch menu, stomp, co-op etc.

Based on the demo, RE5 is gonna be the game to beat in 2009...
