Scourge disappointed me by making his thread about horror films and not about this, so here I am, wondering when these films are going to stop being made. I don't have a fancy list of movies coming up but I'm sure there's a bunch. One need look no further than the Fantastic Four movie: a film made to do the special effects for Mr. Fantastic. Lame.
They should have left well enough alone with Spiderman.
Oh yeah, Batman is the exception.
You might be tired of them, but I hope for a lot more. They are just starting to get really good now that the use of CG can accomplish the FX. Super-Hero flicks are among my favorites. Even though there will continue to be better ones and stinkers, I'll take what I can get.
Superman I and II were nearly as exciting as Star Wars back in the day. Batman and to a degree Batman Returns were decent efforts. But then we got Batman & Robin, PUnisher, the failed FF movie from the 90's, a decent but flawed TV Flash and a crappy Captain America film.
Flash forward to the year X-Men came out. That turned the tide, and Spider-man showed how to really do a fun and cool movie. Their sequels were even better. Despite the oft-mentioned flaws, I liked Hulk and FF for what they were. Batman Begins was truly an exceptional effort to break off from the goofiness yet still have an engaging film, and I hope more movies follow.
I liked Fantastic Four. It is basically a comedy with a bit of action thrown in. It was not a great film I admit, but it covered the goofier side of comics movies, to contrast the ultra-serious Batman Begins.
Anyway, I would hope that Hulk 2 is what X-men2 was to X-men (more fun, more of everything and some real caring about the characters). I hope X-men3 isn't ruined although it doesn't look good without Singer. I expect the Ghost Rider flick to be worse that FF. The next BIG film will be Superman Returns and based on the comic-con footage of last weekend, and the reports, it looks fantastic. Just my 2 cents.
P.S. -- "Man Thing" -- you can rent it , it went straight to DVD. Anyone see it yet? How bad is it?

Theres no where even near the amount of shitty comic movies coming out this year like their are lame romantic comedies and horror films though.
V for Vendetta looks quite good, despite Alan Moore disowning it.
I think it needs to be said that comics in general these days are more intelligent than hollywood movies - things like Constantine, From Hell, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and even Daredevil were absolutely lobotomized on their way to the big screen. Blame bad scriptwriters and movie studios who think you're too stupid to handle the original plots and try to dumb everything down to a Michael Bay level.
Heck, they even wrecked Fantastic Four, and that was simplistic tripe to begin with. My hopes for Watchmen aren't high.
all i have to say is that if you're a fan of the x-men, fear the 3rd movie as Brett Ratner is making sure that it bombs, and bombs hard.
I hate Brett Ratner. Why? Put in the Rush Hour DVD and check out his student "film" that he got Steven Spielberg to cut him a check for like 15 grand. It is HORRENDOUS. I have no idea how he got any further than that pile.

The problem isn't simply that they are superhero movies, but that they're bad movies involving superheroes. Fantastic Four wasn't shit because the characters were super, Fantastic Four was a shit movie because a couple of the actors and the direction were all shit, and because they completely ruined the villain. I think these movies would be better if both marvel and dc took a harder stance to hollywood on the way their properties are being directed. As with every film made, they always have to involve it's origin, some major villian getting offed and a script that contridicts everything most of the fanbase has already come to know as canon.

Hellboy and Constantine were watchable, but neither good or bad. I prefered constantine over hellboy though.
I really liked Hellboy but I admit that it wasn't good. Constantine had a great premise, and some good lighting, but that's about it. The way the gods were portrayed was entirely aimless and goofy. One moment it was anti-religion, the next pro and it never really made up its mind.
Punisher had a lot of wasted potential. I never read the comics, but I really liked Constantine (liked it more than Hellboy too).
The only reason I enjoy Hellboy more is because of the Hellboy character himself. He's more interesting and entertaining than Constantine is.
First off, The Punisher was shit.
I mean, if you're going to steal from a story-arc, at least steal the best parts of it.
And, secondly, V for Vendetta makes me ill. There's no way in hell they can cram that entire epic into a two hour movie.
They're making V for Vendetta.

I recall reading something in the late 90's about Mario being more recognizable than Mickey Mouse, and I would imagine Sonic and Pikachu are there now. Mickey was almost exclusively a brand mascot when I was a kid. He wasn't really being used in a lot of cartoons.
You may have just been ignorant. Mickey branding was kind of big when we were kids if you had the channel. They still aired blocks of the old cartoon. And the mickey mouse ear adverts. And they still had a variation of the mickey mouse club. AND he had three or four video games on each console.
So what were the Mickey Mouse cartoons I was ignorant of, then?

The xmas one I definitely recall, but the other two don't ring a bell.
I remember there being a lot of merchandising, but he wasn't in the big Disney animated movies or TV series.

It's all the goddamn TV series that are the problem now, that shit's way more of a timesink and there are, what, like 20+ damn funnybook shows actively running between CW, ABC, Netflix, Hulu, AMC, Fox, and Syfy now? The Netflix Marvel stuff has been okay, and I actually really liked Legion, but the other TV series aren't worth the time.
Some of the DC animated stuff is worth checking out.
Marvel has become mid 2000s EA, happily glutting the market with mediocre product because it can produce it cheap enough that middling interest can make it profitable.
I don’t feel that way. Though they are definitely glutting the market, the non-team up Marvel movies (so Age of Ultron and Civil War) have been consistently good with very clever set pieces.
- Groot dancing in the opening of GotG 2
- Rocket vs. All the Ravagers in GotG 2
- Hella OP Yondu killing like 120 guys in GotG 2
- Star-Lord dancing in the opening of GotG
- The entire prison escape sequence in GotG 1 including Rocket leg gag
- The end sequence of GotG where Groot dies
- Ant-Man’s tiny fisheye lens mode when he goes tiny
- Ant-Man’s buddy talking through heist details in rapid fire succession but with rambling, overly superfluous details
- The infinite small at the end of Ant-Man
- The entire little/big fight scene at the end of that movie
- Dr. Strange’s mind opening celestial trip
- Pretty much anything in the mirror world
- The time puzzle ending to beating Dormamu (though I’m told this was a Dr. Who idea they redid)
- Spider-Man unlocking his suits advanced mode and not knowing how to use any of the new tech
- Spider-Man having to think his way out of the secure Avengers facility
- Any of the heists involving The Vulture.
- Jeff Goldblum being allowed to ham it up when he receives Thor in Ragmarok, Including his hilarious blob stick-happy body guard.
- Bruce Banner Free jumping out of the space ship at the end of the movie and splatting all over the bifrost bridge
- Hela’s final fight sequence in Thor Ragnarok
The movies have been taking creative leaps since GotG was released. The original Avengers was terrific from beginning to end. Before Marvel took over far too often Hollywood would take some weird twist or perversion with beloved characters that no one asked for.
IMO Marvel has been hitting a ton of homers here.

Yeah the TV shows are all trash. The Netflix ones are the closest to hits I can see. But network television is full of Hollywood politics and rote creative decision making. Most projects there are doomed to formulaic mediocrity.
