This Months Haul~August Edition

I am not justifying shit. Frankly, if I am pirating anything and everything, why should you care? One could argue that people who buy these games are idiots when there is a way to obtain said games on the cheap. Piracy carries a positive expected value and expected utility for the pirate, and at the micro level what they do is absolutely irrevelant. To someone with no moral or ethical grounding, that is all the justification they need (and anything else would be sub-optimal).

The only point that I am making is that downloading an AVI of Battle Chicks With Dicks 5 is not the same thing as stealing a copy of said DVD from a local shop, and it is not even close. It's wrong, it hurts publishers and developers (although the actual damage is severely overstated), it's illegal. That is true. Both crimes carry different costs to society at large, and one is significantly more expensive than the other (you can figure out which).

I think where piracy matters more is with more niche games. If I was to publish a dating sim in the US with an expected userbase of 1,000; piracy would be a concern as I would think the set of people who would buy such a thing are much more techolongy-savvy than your average person who buys Madden 2006.

Anyway, yes, piracy-via-download is a crime. But its a victimless crime. It doesnt hurt anyone in the game industry or the game sales industry. Game sales go up every damn year and the companies are richer than ever. Piracy-via-download mostly consists of a bunch of people downloading games they would have never purchased anyway. Ruh Roh!

The fact it exists, though, is used by trade industries to influence laws and technology that crush our fair-use rights and by companies who put wrong-headed copy-protection schemes that hurt legitimate buyers. So fuck 'em.

This thread is about hauls, not our personal stance on piracy. Can we please get back to the "look at the shit I bought today -Morphix" thread back on track?

Here's the thing, most people who are anti-piracy are under some false impression that if pirates didn't pirate something they would actually go out and buy it, which in most cases is not true. Wether or not I can download the Xenosaga animation doesn't change the fact that I would never in a million years buy it. So if I do go ahead and download it, no one is losing money because no studio would have got it in the first place.

Now if I steal a DVD from a store, someone loses money. The store is down 20 bucks towards their inventory and repeated offesess could possibly cost someone their job. The company that made and shipped the DVD is down all those costs as well.

There's the difference. In one case someone is a direct victim, in the other case no one loses anything but someone gains something; it's a victimless crime, just like diffx said.

I said purchasing, not playing. Did you go to Japan? Because otherwise you're purchasing products that are not licensed for sale in this country.

I have never pirated a game I had intentions of buying. Mainly becuase pirated games and movie are broken or uncompleted.

In most cases a typical day of pirating for me is.

Turns on Firefox
visit bittorrent site
Look at game list
DL whatever looks interesting or get nothing at all.


Very few people scour the internet looking for that exact game or movie. Except for people who watch fansubs i can't think of anyone who specifically looks for something to pirate online.

No one loses cash from pirating on-line. Hell no one even tries to stop it. Except for Valve who in the game industry has taken a stance against piracy. Hell some companies embrace it. Remeber when Anarchy was being offered free via bittorent?

Double click on the brush icon (not the flyout, the icon next to the color indicator) to bring out the brush menu that lets you customize current brushes and create your own (with a lot more custom options). Layers menu is under one of the flyout wheels, I forget which. I couldn't do anything without layers. It also can save as a .psd file with layers intact for porting into photoshop or painter, but oddly can't read .psd files.

Like I said, it's very different from Painter and Photoshop in a lot of little ways so it takes some practice to get used to. I didn't like it at first, now I wouldn't attempt any design without it.

But if I watch Naruto on TV it dosen't necessarily mean I'm watching those commercials. I don't think I've watched more than a handful of commercials since I got my Tivo a little over a year ago (other than when I watch live TV). And about the only thing I watch live is sporting events.

The same argument you made about games can be made for television. Even though I downloaded and watched Natruto on my PC dosen't mean Fox (or whoerver airs it) is loosing any advertising money. You could argue that if ratings go down then they will loose money but with the fucked up rating system we use in this country you'd have to be one of the "magically chosen" few with a nielsen box to make a difference (I've never actually met one of these fabled people). Just because I downloaded a show dosen't mean I'd have watched it on TV.

There's nothing lame about Naruto. The only real reason I download any show is because I'm never sitting down long enough at home to watch any real television. Downloading it just gives me the luxury of watching it whenever I have time to sit in front of my computer screen.

You are mistaken.

For Japan Only

Only means the warranty from the company the made on game is not valid outside of Japan. When you import stuff from places like Lik Sang and NCSX they deal in 2nd hand merchinedise. This why no laws are being broken.

Consumers of legally purchased software are given the specific right to resell it under USC Title 17 Chapter 1 subsection 109.

When a contract goes head-to-head against the United States Code, the contract loses. Them's the breaks. Licenses are not laws.

The only way that Japanese law is relevant is under the Berne Convention, which covers derivative works. As a treaty (the US is a signatory nation) that does have the force of law, it is just as illegal to make copies or derivative works of an import game as it is a domestic one.

It is statistics. It is proven that if you have a sufficiently large sample size, you can limit your error to a fairly small percentage. It is proven mathematically, but it is not intuitive.

Very nice, you picked up on the 'fuzzy' language that statisticians like to use! Well, there is an exact formula you can use to figure out how large a sample size you need based on what you think the total population is. But I don't remember it hehe and I am too lazy to look for it. If you are really interested, you can take an introductory statistic course and you will learn all that and more. Personally, I think it is pretty interesting stuff and you will understand how statistics can be twisted to represent all kinds of BS :bs:

But for now, you can basically take it as faith that Nielsen knows what they are doing :)

For a more intuitive example, all the polls you see around election time use similarly small samples, and they seem to be fairly accurate.

Actually yes. Once you cross about 1,000 in total population, the percentage you need to sample drops off significantly. In this case, using simple random sampling and taking a worst case scenario of a 50/50 "success" rate, you would only need 385 data points to achieve a 95% confidence level and a 5% error rate for a population of 99 million.

Believe it or not, I do this kind of stuff every day. It's amazing how few people have even a basic understanding of statistics, which is why TV and newspapers get away with ridiculous analyses without people getting up at arms.

I took a statistics course last semester and it was tied into probability alot, but I didn't like the way it was taught because we learned about all these distribution curves (Weibull, beta, gamma, ect.) but they never explained where these curves and formulas came from, so it was frustrating. I don't really like statistics anyway, it is by far my least favorite math subject.

That's the problem, they cram all these distribution curves and what not in an intro course, but doesn't explain the where it comes from, why/when it is appropriate to use. In short, the practical application is sadly lacking. My first 2 intro stat courses were all theoretical, which made it even harder to connect what I learn to the real world. Until I took regression analysis, which is kinda fun. I would actually like to take more courses on that sort of thing but it is rather expensive on graduate level courses.... :(

I remember when Rasmussen did polling, with the old "portrait of america" web site, for the 2000 election. They were predicting a Bush landslide, and showing only a 1% margin of error, I think. They had daily polls, as well as longer duration ones, all showing a Bush landslide in the popular vote. On election day, he lost the popular vote and they had egg on their faces.

It seems that focusing on "very likely voters," as opposed to likely voters or just registered voters, skews the results to the GOP side because Republicans are more likely to vote.

Either way the products are being purchased outside of America in large quantities of multiple copies and are being imported, and I'm almost positive they aren't doing that with an agreement of the original company. Them selling to you isn't illegal as they're based here but their aquiring of product is. They purchased them solely for distribution from overseas one way or another and they are not the copyright owners.

Me and a brother got hooked on the SMS when I was 11 and he was 7 at a friends house who owned one. So we bought a SMS later that year and loved it but that was 1991 and we found out Sega would be discontinuing it. So we sold it and my parents helped me, my bro and sister save up for a NES. SMB, Duckhunt, Mega Man and Zelda were bliss but now and then I would still think about playing Alex Kidd, Psycho Fox, Hang On and Safari Hunt.

So in '97 when I was a junior in high school I had a Master System yearning again and bought one and some games at a pawn shop. But still no Psycho Fox or Alex Kidd. I signed onto the Sega Master System mailing list (RIP) and finally found my two favorite games and I haven't let go of the system since.

Yeah, me and my brother sold ours in 1991 when we found out Sega wouldn't be making new SMS games anymore so our parents helped us buy a NES. But now and then I would still have a SMS yearning so 6 years later when I was a high school junior I bought another at a pawn shop and tracked down Alex Kidd and Psycho Fox on ebay (2 games that if we'd owned at the time we had our SMS, we wouldn't have sold it, our friend who introduced us to the SMS wouldn't let us borrow his Alex Kidd, Psycho Fox or ANY of his SMS carts bah)

Just goes to show, it's not the system, it's the games which always keep you coming back.

Anyways, fond memories of Hang On, Safari Hunt (better than Duck Hunt with more variety), Alex Kidd and killing enemies with Birdfly in Psycho Fox. Ahhh. I think I will haul my SMS down to my brother's next time I visit him for a nostalgia trip.

Mighty haul there, morphix. I just picked up Ric Flair's "To be the man" book in paper at Borders for $7, thanks to my 25% off coupon.

Though better judgement would tell me not to buy it, I went ahead and purchased Madden 2006 (Xbox) for $36 at Fry's. I'm so, so with the title so far, but at least if I don't like it, I can take it to Blockbuster and get $35 for it.

I bought it from there because it was a little cheaper than most other sites that carried the line, and it even offered paypal.

Oh and be sure to check out the differences in the 3AM and the 6AM as far as the heat units go...I'd be afraid to even try that if I did suck it up and pay out the cash to get my hands on a bottle.
