Ridge Racer 6

are you power sliding or braking before each turn or something? because RR is all about power sliding at the last second before entering a turn at full speed. and to the poster above, Shinji Hosoe and Ayako Saso DID the soundtracks for the first two RR games, attributing that Rotterdam electronic style techno. But I dug those jungle beats from Rage Racer and that jazzy R4 shit. But yeah, RR, Daytona, Sega Rally, Scud Racer, Outrun 2, Wipeout 1-3, Motortoon, Rallisport 2 >>>>>any other racer in existance.

Yeah, pretty much the whole first class is just for total n00bs. It's no indication of what the other 90% of the game is like.

I want this game now. Been playing a lot of Test Drive Unlimited lately (which I think is amazing), but I'm in the mood for something a little more arcadey. This is $20 these days, too, if I'm not mistaken...

Burnout Revenge smokes it for arcade racers, so if you don't have that, you an pick that up for cheap

Burnout Revenge and Ridge Racer 6 are nowhere near the same type of game, so one can't be a substitue for the other.

Get RR6, it's a very fine game. Then get BR as well at some point.

That may be a good point. If you got BR first, your standards would be too high to play RR6.

Joust is right, Burnout still blows this away. Not saying RR6 doesnt have its merits, it just gets boring and repetitive doing the same thing over and over hundreds of times

Im not trying to influence anyone, just expressing an opinion (im the one who bumped this thread back up after months of dormancy)

Some thoughts:

Actually, for me its more of the feeling of speed you get when comparing the two, which is what Im looking for in a racing game, immersion. BO takes the cake. RR6 comes close with tier 3-4 cars, but not quite. It even goes over the top at the highest tier.

In BO I also like the faster pace of the races, the variety of gameplay. I also get feeling of urgency to win the race, (which just isnt there for me in RR6).

RR6 when you want to get all of the world explorer completed, just seems tedious and like you just have to slug your way through it. Whereas BO and PGR you have an end in sight and it seems acheivable. RR6 is good in short doses so you dont get bored.

I also like that you can finish races and move on in PGR and BO without having to win, and that there are different levels and times to acheive different targets. RR6 (the main game) you have to win 1st to move on, every time.

The drifting in BO and RR6 are both great. Neither one does wrong.

These arent baseless opinions, as Ive played through PGR, BO and Im close to being done with RR6, the only next gen racing series I cant compare to is Need for Speed


Anyways for me:

Graphics: PGR3> BO > RR6

Gameplay: BO > RR6 > PGR

Variety: BO > PGR > RR6 -fixed

Music: BO > PGR > RR6 (they all lose when you play your own)

If you go with just the sheer amount of content: RR6 > BO > PGR3





Plus I like crashing things ;)

They're all good games, in any case. It's pretty much about whether you prefer direct competition, learning to drive well, or getting into a zone.

Almost finished w/ World Xplorer - I was happily surprised when the Special Route unlocked.

Basic Route didn't give me very much trouble. I used Standard drift types, as Dynamic was too touchy for me.

I'll be damned if I'm going to finish all the Single Race challenges. No-nitrous shouldn't be too bad, but no-collision's gonna be a pain, especially on the narrower tracks like Island Circle.

Is the slightest nick enough to cost you the race, or are they talking about full-on collisions? I haven't tried any of them yet but it would help to know in advance.

I had major problems with the third to last track I think, cheating bastards.

Expert wasn't so bad. I've been stuck on special for over a month; I think alot of is because I only have 2 cars to choose between and one of them is one of those useless drift trucks.

Expert wasn't impossible, but when the AI repeatedly has level 2 & 3 boosts right off the starting line, I gladly invite it to kiss my sharries. That's not "expert" challenge, that's straight cheating.

Special sucked too, but at least you've usually got only one opponent to deal with - easier to block em.

Unfortunately the last bunch of races dropped RR6 a couple notches in my own book, but it remains one of the best racers I've ever played. Not bad for a game I bought on a whim.

I just hate how some of the people on Live jerk the car around just to be able to constantly hit nitrous throughout the entire race.

the first 2 final route races were the toughest in the game i would say 3rd for me was master race 13. also finished the whole map without nitrous support, so i unlocked the laurel crown too

unlocking the world explorer was definitely the hardest/longest achievement ive done to date

dont think i will do the online achievements (usually dont), so im shelving this guy for now

Well, something good came out of Burnout Dominator - I'm back to Special and Master routes and it's coming easier than before.

Playing Dominator also served to show me just how well-done RR6 is, as being able to easily see the track is a definite plus.

anything regarding Burnout(or NFS for that matter) doesn't deserve to share the same space, post or even sentence as Ridge Racer. Criterion WISHES they could make an arcade game series as well as Namco.

If you're arguing that Burnout never appeared in arcades, then I agree. I also agree if you're arguing that Namco does a better job of porting PSP->360/PS3 then Criterion does PSP->PS2.

Other than that, the RR series is a good racing game with nice expansion packs. A model later adopted by Guild Wars, although ArenaNet decided to not include most of the prior games with later releases like Namco chose to.

Ridge Racer on PSP is better than BurnOut on 360, so hardware has nothing to do with anything.

I didn't say it did, all I mentioned was whoever handles Namco's ports are better at doing so.

Right. Whoever handles Namco's originals is also better at doing so. Hell, BurnOut isn't even EA's best racing series, though NFS badly needs to stick to the Hot Pursuit style.

NFS is okay. I'd rather play RR, Sega Rally, PGR, BO, or WipeOut, but it makes do during the lulls between those games.

God I can't wait for Sega Rally Revo.

I hope it is nothing like Sega Rally 2006.

Sega Rally 2006 gets a lot more abuse than it deserves. It's a PS2 game, so it's not pretty, but it does support 16x9 and 480p. It also plays just as well as the prior games in the series.

It sucks, plain and simple. I still find R6 to be slow and dull, and the fact that you have to slide all over the fucking place to build up nitrous, just to get some sense of real speed, shows it. When a race starts and everyone starts spazzing out all over the place, it just seems like something is broken. I know about the better cars, blah blah, but it's stupid that someone can just drift all over the place and constantly be ahead. It says that you should spend more effort learning the drift exploit than unlocking better cars.

No you don't.

Nitrous builds up depending how fast you are going. The higher the speed of the drift, the faster you build it. The only way to get up a high speed is to drive in a straight line, not zig-zagging around. I don't know what you think you saw, but go into a class 3 or 4 race, start drifting all over the place and let me know how you do. Not having a good racing line = instant ownage.

I wasn't in a high class race that I know of, and the others were all using the same car as me. They were drifting all over the place and consistently stayed ahead of my traditional driving. I was using drifting in turns to build up nitrous, but I could never catch up.

Regardless, I simply don't have enough interest in R6 to keep playing it. I found it to be too slow and dull, and it requires much more time to get through than I'm willing to invest. It's just not really my style of play.

RIDGE RACER RULES OK!!

Started this tonight. I haven't played a Ridge Racer since the first one on PS1. I like it. I could see getting way into the World Explorer mode if I had the inclination.

I wonder how it will feel to go back to TD:U (currently still my favorite 360 game) after this drift-crazy madness, though.

I just watched Lemony Snicket and I feel really dirty for thinking that 14 year old girl is hot. She is though.

Wait a minute, what the hell. Everything I read told me PGR3 was the much better game, but I'm having far more fun with this. PGR felt like a clinical study in racing. This feels like a game. Just got to the nighttime Rave Racer track with the Galaga remix song. Damn good stuff.

Now I'm wondering if I made a mistake by skipping RR2 through 5. At least now I know there's ONE game to buy if I get a PS3 soon (RR7).

Pretty much any Ridge Racer game is a lot better than PGR.

Though know that RR6 is a lot more forgiving than the other Ridge Racer games. R4 is my personal favorite, and RRV is also very awesome. Both games are much better than RR6 (and presumably RR7, as it looks identical).

I think PGR's arcadey enough that I wouldn't put it in the clinical study category, but I know exactly what you mean about the feeling like a game part. I own both, but something about PGR 3 leaves me flat (and I liked the first two games, never played PGR2). I had alot more fun with RR6. RR7 is like the exact same game with one more track and better customization options, though.

I know I know. I was this close to putting "and not in a good clinical study way like with Gran Turismo", but I wanted my comment to be zippier. I enjoyed the original GT as the hardcore sim that it was at the time, but kind of got my fill from that first game, and never felt an urge to buy the rest.

But yeah, I can see how PGR is a technically accomplished series. Like Strider said, it just left me feeling flat. I feel like maybe it's kinda soulless. I could change my mind if I gave it more time, though. I do that a lot.

In other news, I just played Burnout 3 for an hour and got the most intense rush of the night. That's white knuckle action right there -- literally. Ideally I'd like to finish that one before trying Revenge.

Maybe I'll pop in PGR3 for a refresher, and the trifecta.

RR7 is certainly the version to own if you're going to own one but if you already have RR6 you can pass on it. It's really RR 6.5.

Both are awesome games, however, and I've finally come to accept nitrous as part of the series.

Does RR7 have enough new content to make it worth buying? The customization intrigues me; I thought the dumbest part of 6 was that it gave you no indication of the differences between each car, I'm hoping it's more evident in 7. It's only the one new track, right? Did they add much in the way of vehicles & music? Is the game as obscenely long as World Exporer? And do you notice any difference whatsoever in the visuals? I've seen screen comparions that are supposed to make it look better, but I honestly couldn't tell.

1. No, not for the price discrepancy considering you can get RR6 from around $19-$29 and RR7 costs $60. If you bought RR6 at full price, I'd be hardpressed to buy RR7. If you bought RR6 at $20, then I'd seriously consider RR7. RR7 is the version to own, but it's hard to advocate paying another $60 unless you're a huge fan. I'd do it, but I wouldn't advise someone else to.

2. Customization seems cool, you can buy an extra nitrous tank, buy flex nitrous, engine upgrades, and tire upgrades seem legit, everything else seems a bit cosmetic, but I can't speak on this yet. These seem like they may be more geared towards towards online play and honestly, I have not gone online with either RR6 or RR7.

3. Not sure how many total new tracks there are but it's more than one.

4. I will have to put in more time. There is a slipstreaming meter now, though, which is fucking sweet.

5. RR7's Ridge State GP seems like it will be as drawn out as RR6's World Explorer.

6. I'm running RR7 through HDMI so that may have an effect, but it looks a little more coloful, otherwise I can't really tell much of a difference. I would lean towards saying that RR7 looks better overall, but that could just be due to the extra year of development.

There's less nuance to PGR's driving model than in any of the earlier RR games, though like I said, the driving in RR6 and RR7 is much less demanding. Even then, my biggest complaint about the PGR games is the track designs. So damn boring. Ridge Racer consistently spanks PGR (and most racing games) on that front.

And I dunno, maybe it's because I play Gran Turismo 4 and played Forza for a long time, but PGR is nowhere near "clinical study" category for me. The driving model in PGR is pretty damn arcadey, just restrained compared to stuff like Ridge Racer and Daytona.

I would still recommend both R4 and RRV. I prefer R4 personally, but RRV is more demanding and stands well on its own for that. Both games are much better than RR6/7.

Wiki says 22 tracks but I read a review that said 21, so six or seven new tracks unless both are on crack. Brand new soundtrack but it felt weaker than RR6's.
Namco should have included more songs instead of letting us pay for the good stuff through micro transactions.

That's cool, you guys actually make R7 sound pretty decent. I had though that it was only the Buddha forest track that they added. I only paid $15 cdn for RR6 new, so it wouldn't be that bad buying 7 (not that I have any means to play it anyway).

RR6's soundtrack is decent, but the microtransaction songs are totally worthless. They're stored in something called the player's disc, which they forgot to give you access to in races. So you can choose a song to start a race, but if you're doing more than one you're stuck because the second race will just be from a random dics (not the player's though).

With Oblivion being delayed a month here I'm probably gonna pick it up. Six or so stages makes sense since there was about three routes on every enviroment in RR6.

And yea the setup for the micro songs was stupid but I still bough Discoball, so awesome.

the Japanese own arcade racing, the only racing games worth playing (aside from say...Motortoon or the original Wipeout Trilogy). Better soundtracks too. RR1-7>>>>>any PGR or Gran Turismo

Haven't been able to put that much time into part seven but so far it feels pretty fresh despite the lack of new content.
RR6 comes of as being depressed with it's weather somehow (aviator loop/lap excluded) while the tracks in RR7 has been given the borderline insanely bright skies and more color. The new tracks range from great (the waterfall/budha) to downright awful (the one with almost no sharp curves). I like the new approach of buying and upgrading, haven't had any time to play it online yet.
