Schools with Indian mascots will no longer be allowed to promote them during NCAA post-season tournaments. I guess this doesn't include football, since the NCAA still has its head up its ass on that playoff...

As a student at UIUC (one of the school's affected by this) I'm kind of glad to hear it. The amount of protesting and attention the mascot issue gets really screws up the atmosphere around campus. I just wish it would be settled one way or the other (that is, keeping or replacing Chief Illiniwek.) The biggest oppposition to changing the mascott is the HUGE loss in alumni funds. At least if the NCAA mandates it, alumni will have a hard time blaming the school. We lose the racist mascott and keep our funding.
And you can be damned sure UIUC Basketball is a strong enough reason to drop the Chief.
Most of those mascots are ugly anyway.
I'll never understand this one. If I was living somewhere as a minority and sports teams were using General White Man or something as their logo because he symbolized strength, martial prowess and stoicism I don't see how that would piss me off.
So its okay to use the mascots in the regular season? Does the NCAA not have anything to do with that or something? I am confused.
That's the thing, it's not even pissing off the people in question. The Seminoles even got permission by the actual tribe to use that name, and they're totally in support of it.Quote:

The NCAA makes most of its money from the tournament. The reality is they dont give a shit what the deal with mascots are, but the tournament throws so much attention at the NCAA. Theyre just following the money trail.Quote:
