My HD just went on me, but not in the usual way. My computer now seems to beleive that this drive is unformatted all of a sudden, but I can still see the drive in Windows and it's still recognized fine in the BIOS, so I'm hoping something just happned to the FAT somehow. Is there any way to recover this? I had everything on this drive...
It happened to me once, a drive error might've caused it to format...I'd check around a little before considering yourself shit out of luck but it doesn't sound good.
No, no it's not actually formatted. Something just happened to the boot sector, so that windows wants to reformat it. I didn't actually let it reformat.Quote:

Get a harddisk utility (preferably from your manufacturer) and put it on a boot disk. Or if you use *nix get a livecd from one of the distros. Or, get this boot cd, though I've never used it before personally.
But before you do anything you might want to find out exactly what's wrong. Nothing makes things worse faster than using the wrong tool for the job.
it looks like the FAT is corrupted. A tool called GetDataBack found most of my important stuff intact, but it costs $70 to use if I want to save said data...
I thought there was another program like that for free in another thread somewhere.
Seems like you have just about the same problem I had a couple years back when an extra HD kept telling me the disk wasn't formatted and asked me if I wanted that after several folders I clicked. I had the disk set to FAT32 as well, so I'm guessing storing memory like that is unstable.

It's an old drive, I originally used it with Win98. Waiting on Seagate to replace my big shiny new drive that died on me in 3 weeks.Quote:

A similar thing happened to me once, and that's what I did; worked fine.
