PS2 To See Price Drop

Don't underestimate the importance of media storage - it won the 32-bit generation for Sony when Square switched sides because they couldn't do cg on a reasonably priced cart. I can see it being a definite factor when decisions are being made as to where the next Final Fantasy and Ninja Gaiden end up.

Btw - has anyonme seen any confirmation of this PS2 price drop rumour yet? I haven't.

I'm not underestimating storage... I'm just saying that everyone keeps saying "blu ray player" like they'll care. Yes the storage will be nice, but so many people seem to care that they own blu ray, but don't care to own an HDTV. That's all I said. with THAT said, I think the 360 will have to upgrade to HD-DVD, otherwise they're screwed, because I know they'll need the extra space. There's a reason current DVD movies are not in HD :) Blu Ray holds more than HD-DVD, but HD-DVD is cheaper to produce... so they each have their pros and cons.

This is true. I'm curious to see if Sony's willing to make less per game sold than Microsoft, or sell their games at $70 USD. Blu Ray could end up backing them into a corner until manufacturing costs come down. I'm also willing to bet the number of malfunctions & disc read errors is higher with the new technology. They had enough trouble with just the blue backed DVDs.

I think you're overstating the extra storage space advantage Blu-Ray has over HD-DVD. Its definitely not the same as 8 meg N64 carts vs. 650 meg CDs - CDs were both larger and cheaper to produce, and Blu-Ray only gets 1 out of the 2 (but the difference obviously isnt as big).

If the average PSX game was, lets say, 600 megs, and the average PS2 game was 3 gigs. Okay (though the average for both is probably a lot smaller). Five time increase. If it keeps up, then we're looking at 15 gig games, still well within the capacity of dual-layer HD-DVD. Blu-Ray may be a bit excessive, at least for this generation.

I love how people keep saying "blue backed DVDs." The "blue backed" discs were just CDs. In other words, some games were on CD, some were on DVD. Granted, there shouldn't be an issue with it reading a CD, but that's exactly what happened with the system. Blu-Ray is supposedly smudge/scratch proof too though. I read that they wrote on a blu ray disc with a sharpee, and it just beaded and dripped off.

Blu-Ray can hold up to 200 gigs... I certainly don't see games using that anytime soon :)

How many people are going to have a television with 1080p? Sony just introduced it's first 1080p television (Grand Wega SXRD). I don't think 1080p will be much of a factor until the end of the coming generation of consoles, or the beginning of the following generation.

That's my point... Blu-Ray is not this big thing everything thinks it is, for the average person anyway.
