PS2 To See Price Drop

This isn't 100% yet, we should know by the end of today - I'm not sure if Sony's done their presentation at the German Games Conference yet. This article also mentions Europe specifially, not North America. But PSTwo's been on the market for a year now, and with 360 coming up and this being PS2's last Christmas before PS3, now seems as logical a time for a price drop as any. So if anyone doesn't have a PS2 yet, or just needs to replace a creaky old one:

About friggin TIME! It's still launch price here in Denmark and they still run advertisements for it with the 250 $ pricetag. I swore never to give in and buy it until the pricedrop.

Sure, there are people wanting a PS2.. my girlfriend's kids are old enough now to play something besides V-Smile, so we gave them one (with Sly 2!) last Christmas. Not everyone's an enthusiast, or has been in gaming for a long time.

My first PS2 worked perfectly for over 2 years and I only traded it in becuase I wanted the smaller version, which has now been working for almost a year with no problems whatsoever.

My PS2 was bought 4 months after launch. Its been dropped twice and its been my only DVD player since I bought it. Still works pretty good.

It is dying out though, so this pricedrop is welcome news.

The new PSTwo has no problems running blue backs, is less likely to overheat, takes up less space, and has a both a built in online adaptor and a built in reciever for the DVD remote. How is upgrading to that stupid? Especially when after the trade of my old one in it cost me less to get that than it would have to buy an online adaptor for the bigger ps2?

Did your old one have a reciever for the remote built in and the ability to turn it off from a distance after you watch a movie? Mine didn't.

Did you're old one play every blue back perfectly? Mine didn't.

Did you're old take up less space than the newer model allowing for more things to fit into the space yuo put your systems in? Mine didn't.

Seems like there was good reason to upgrade. Especially when it was essentially free. Then again, if you're stupid enough to keep spamming the exact same bullshit in every thread, you're stupid enough to not understand how upgrading instead of buying an online adaptor for the same cost is a good deal.

Can PStwos use Swap Magic discs to play imports? I'd like a second PS2 for my DDR cabinet so I don't have to move my current one back and forth, but it has to play both regions... Will a flip top mod work?

anyone know what the mod chip scene is like for the new PSTwo's maybe if this price drop is cheap enough I can buy one and have it modded

they're fucking nice looking systems and I love the toploading aspect but I just can not give up having a moded system

I'm one of those people. I had a PS2 at launch until a little over a year and a half ago when mine crapped out on me. Ever since then I've been more than happy with my Xbox.

Now with this new pricing scheme for Xbox 360, and this supposivly lower price for PS2, I will most likely pick up a PS2 and play through all the games I've missed in the past 2 years.

People keep saying this, yet I've never had a Sony product crap out on me. That is, unless you count the time I dropped my Discman onto concrete while riding my bike numerous times.

You either have really good luck with Sony's gaming products, or bad luck. There doesn't appear to be much in-between.

I'll get a new PSTwo, because my old one won't play blue backs, and I'm two damn lazy to go in and fix it AGAIN.

I have a launch PS2 that works perfectly. My sister-in-law and her husband have two PS2's, both of which crapped out on them. (One dead, the other plays some games and DVDs but not others.) They don't have a regular old DVD player, either, so I might give them my old PS2 and buy a PSTwo.

theres arent less chips, the chips they had are smaller. and when i first got one the thing could almost fry and egg on the non dvd drive side. a lot of others at the same time posted in my thread stating the same. mebbe you got a good one but that doesnt mean its the only answer.

PStwo's also have a design flaw that causes the laser to burn itself out if the machine should lock up for some reason.
Fortunately, lock-ups are extremely rare, but they do happen.

my first PS2 died in less than a year, but I'm going on 3 years with my current one, with no signs of death anytime soon.

You mean other than the huge amount of storage for games and extras, right?

Battlefield 2 and Doom 3 both managed to make it with only 3 discs (2 gigs). I think we'll be alright on games for a while without needing to move to bluray.

That's why you have to install PC games... the files on those 3 discs could all be compressed...

The Doom 3 directory is 1.73gb, and the Battlefield 2 directory is 1.81gb.

EA owns DICE, so Battlefield 4 will be exactly the same as Battlefield 2 but with EA Trax and more bugs. Doom 5 wont be coming out until 2017 if history repeats itself.

Battlefield 1942, including Road to Rome, is 1.24gb. That game's 3 years old now...so it doesn't seem like space requirements have gone up all that much.

I'm in the market for a PS2 and don't have one, but it's not a price drop I'm waiting for. It's Sony hardware that isn't made like shit. If they came out with a remodeled "quality control" edition PS2 I'd pick it up.

WoW is 4.7g and MxO is 5.3g, it all depends on how much of a world they want to construct.

Well, yeah, but every game on MS' and Sony's platforms next gen have to have mandatory HD. The great HD switch will occur midway through the generation. So the extra storage definitely matters. Especially if a move is made to more voice acting in games - that takes up as much space as anything. Itagaki's already said they'd almost used up the entire disc for DoA4, and that's just a launch title.

Don't underestimate the importance of media storage - it won the 32-bit generation for Sony when Square switched sides because they couldn't do cg on a reasonably priced cart. (Well, that and Enix exclusivity). Blu-ray could end up having the same advantage over HD-DVD. I can see it being a definite factor when decisions are being made as to where the next Final Fantasy and Ninja Gaiden end up.

Btw - has anyonme seen any confirmation of this PS2 price drop rumour yet? I haven't.

I'm not underestimating storage... I'm just saying that everyone keeps saying "blu ray player" like they'll care. Yes the storage will be nice, but so many people seem to care that they own blu ray, but don't care to own an HDTV. That's all I said. with THAT said, I think the 360 will have to upgrade to HD-DVD, otherwise they're screwed, because I know they'll need the extra space. There's a reason current DVD movies are not in HD :) Blu Ray holds more than HD-DVD, but HD-DVD is cheaper to produce... so they each have their pros and cons.

I think you're overstating the extra storage space advantage Blu-Ray has over HD-DVD. Its definitely not the same as 8 meg N64 carts vs. 650 meg CDs - CDs were both larger and cheaper to produce, and Blu-Ray only gets 1 out of the 2 (but the difference obviously isnt as big).

If the average PSX game was, lets say, 600 megs, and the average PS2 game was 3 gigs. Okay (though the average for both is probably a lot smaller). Five time increase. If it keeps up, then we're looking at 15 gig games, still well within the capacity of dual-layer HD-DVD. Blu-Ray may be a bit excessive, at least for this generation.

I love how people keep saying "blue backed DVDs." The "blue backed" discs were just CDs. In other words, some games were on CD, some were on DVD. Granted, there shouldn't be an issue with it reading a CD, but that's exactly what happened with the system. Blu-Ray is supposedly smudge/scratch proof too though. I read that they wrote on a blu ray disc with a sharpee, and it just beaded and dripped off.

Blu-Ray can hold up to 200 gigs... I certainly don't see games using that anytime soon :)

How many people are going to have a television with 1080p? Sony just introduced it's first 1080p television (Grand Wega SXRD). I don't think 1080p will be much of a factor until the end of the coming generation of consoles, or the beginning of the following generation.
