OSX 10.4 upgrade, font specifically

Just upgraded to 10.4 (Tiger) and the only thing bothering me are the fonts on Safari. TNL and some other sites are now shown in an awful squished-looking font, and I want it to look like it did back in 10.2. I went into Safari preferences and changed the font around, but it didn't seem to do anything.

Completely clueless, any help would be appreciated. I know it's a very stupid detail to make a new thread about, but it's driving me insane.

There is prolly somewhere you can override the default display font. For Tiger I recommend you switch to Opera or Firefox.

I'm using Safari, so telling me to switch doesn't exactly answer the question of how to change the Safari display font.

FWIW I'm running Tiger and Safari and don't get any squished fonts. Have you run Software update? There was an update to Safari from the standard Tiger install I believe.

I just did and restarted, still the same ugly new font that looks smooshed.

I've seen a few places that changing it from Times 16 to Lucidia Grande (14 or 16) makes it like jaguar, but it shows no difference to me. Yes, I've quit Safari and relaunched, same thing. I even restarted, it has no affect on the font.

I'm not having garbled or mangled text problems; this new font is just ugly and very tightly packed, the old Jaguar one was more appealing and easier on the eyes. That's all I want.

Here's how the fonts in Safari look for me - I haven't changed anything from defaults.

That looks great, but is sadly NOT what I currently have. What the hell?

Not that bad, I know, but it doesn't look right. It looks better in that capture than on screen, if that makes any sense.

PROTIP: Don't screw with your fonts.

I haven't ever deleted/moved/messed with my fonts. Everything's as it was when I just installed...
