Death of US industry?

It's been in the news for months about the lost jobs, closed plants for both GM & Ford. :(

So are GM and Ford on the way out, or to paraphrase Mark Twain has news of their death been greatly exaggerated? With IBM selling out their PC side to Lenovo, and another Chinese company's failed bid for Unocal 76, can US industry recover? :sweat:

Harley Davidson was once in financial troubles and during the 80's sold frame designs to Honda. Now Harley's are the must own bikes.

GM and Ford are being crushed thanks to the unbelievable cost of health insurance for their entire aging and retired workforce. And the union won't give up a cent, even though GM and Ford are their bread and butter, lets be real here.

Fifteen hundred dollars of each car sold by GM goes to pay for health insurance. Thats more than the steel in the car.

Unions are the reason many US industries can't compete. The best thing that could possible happen is to make them illegal. Unskilled pieces of shit should be paid accordingly. If your job goes to Taiwan because you're overpaid for the marshmallow between your ears, maybe you should have stayed awake in school.

I'm saying they should pay what the job is worth. I'm not saying that every union does the right thing and that all are good or hurtful for industry. And that solutions are never as clear and easy as you or most people on the left or right would have one believe.

As harsh as that is, it is somewhat true. Americans have this wonderful dream that everyone should get all sorts of awesome things just for working. But that money has to come from somewhere to pay for all these things. This puts our products at a disatvantage in regards to other nations who don't have such high hopes for it's own people's wellfair.

Yea, and the employees shouldnt be bankrupting the company so they can get their ludicrously generous benefit packages. I worked at a factory for two weeks on an assembly line last summer. The job was mindless trash and the pay was low. But you know what, any monkey could do the job. It probably wasnt all that different from a car assembly line. So I probably was being paid what it was worth.

My job now, not everyone could do. In fact, most people could not do it. So I deserve more money than an assembly line grunt. Simple fact.
