Yeah, but I was hoping it would be completely player-controllable - like Shenmue's. The L2 camera is okay for battle, but doesn't do squat to help immerse yourself in the game.

I agree that the camera is godawful, but I'm loving this game. Wandering around and beating the shit out of random punks to get some money to play slots, talk up sluts, or hit the batting cage = awesome. Getting used to the fighting, but a lock-on would have been nice.
Also, Yoshi (I think?) was right: if anyone was afraid of this being too much like Shenmue in the bad ways (not that Shenmue had that many flaws, mind you!), the fact that the game progresses at your pace, not the pace of an in-game clock, is incredible. There's a very cool city to play around in and I'm glad nobody's telling me where I have to be at this point in the game.
In conclusion, those of you who are waiting for price drops are retarded. Buy this game. I'm gonna go play more now.

Got to chapter 8, game is continuing to rule. The story kinda went off the beaten path and slumped a bit, but I got to explore the city and the side missions are awesome. Now I'm flush with cash (~450,000 yen) and plan to spend it in the hostess bars, probably. Of course once you met Nishiki, it got awesome again.
Is there anything going on in the strip club other than that nutty hitman early in the game?
edit: if you still don't own this game, eat a dick.
Shenmue 2 is probably the king of mini-games. It has some pretty neat stuff besides Lucky Hit. I was quite fond of darts.Quote:

I agree with diffx for once. About Yakuza, mind you, not Shenmue. This game is River City Ransom 2006. The adventure element is weak but the combat rocks the proverbial socks and the story has me so far. Good show.
I just wanted to chime in with another "it's awesome" impression.
I am having such a blast with this game. Just wandering around in the game's bustling city, taking my time, doing whatever strikes my immediate fancy, engaging the story at my own leisure --it makes for such an enjoyable, immersive experience. One funny thing I've noticed, is that I seem to be able to get into the game so much more at night. I find myself saving it for when I can get a few good hours in at night, and just enjoy it.
I'm really glad to see so many other TNLers have taken such a liking to it as well. I can't remember the last time so many of us were in unison over one game. Great, great game.
Just to cast a little doom and gloom on this love fest, chapter 6 was pure suck from start to finish. The story had nothing to do with the main plot, and worse was some after school special crap. Plus the fighting has gotten dull for me. If not for the bad camera and grabbing a guy when I meant to pick up a weapon, it would be stupidly easy. My move selection is too limited, and the targeting it so wonky that half the time I can't hit a guy when he's lying on the ground even though I'm clipping into him. I also have about 2 million yen, and done all the the worthwhile sub-plots, plus two hostesses. I don't think I'll bother with the others, since it feels too much like work even with a 3k exp reward.
I'm sure I just have to shove my way through to get back to the awesome.
