The Best of Generation IV

Since we have run out of memory bandwidth naming conventions, I chose to call the generation containing the Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox "Generation IV". That makes the NES, SMS, and 7800 "Generation I" and the pre-NES consoles just that.

The current generation is all but over. The list of promising titles on the Nintendo DS outnumbers that of any of the consoles for the rest of the their lives. Thus, it is time to look back at the six years from 9/9/99 to present and to recognize those titles which made this generation see the best year ever in gaming, 2004, and many of its best games.

Here are my picks, alng with their best platform, developer, and publisher:

I've enjoyed gaming in this generation. It seemed as though developers finally express their ideas without the gameplay suffering. Now it is a matter of going to photorealism and such. I feel that retro gaming will come back even stronger than ever, and I don't mean Jaks-Pacific plug-ins. I feel that there will be a bigger market for "throwbacks".
I'd like to see it begin with the new Mario on the DS.

I'd say it's still a bit early for this (Shadow of the Colussus isn't out yet), buuuut...

Genre categories don't work anywhere near as well as they once did so I'm going to lump a bunch into a big explanations.

For games that are close to pure action I would say Jet Grind Radio is the best. Some call it a platformer but I'm not so sure I would label it as such. I would give Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat best platformer. Then there's stuff like Wario Ware which is a completely different style of pure action game.

Heading into Action/adventure territory things get even blurrier. Resident Evil 4 is certainly the top horror themed one. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is the best at its mix of genre elements. Then you have games like Beyond Good & Evil which would be compared to games like Zelda. BG&E is the prime of its kind this gen so far. It gets even more confusing when you compare these to graphic adventures. Shenmue II is my favourite of that sub-genre, if it even fits the category.

Even GTA: SA could be considered an Action/RPG of sorts. I would give Deus Ex best ARPG even though it's not a traditional one and could fit into the FPS or action/adventure genres. For "regular" first-person shooters nothing comes close to Half-Life 2 for single player. I would say Unreal Tournament 2004 is the best multiplayer FPS.

I guess for pure RPGs, Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind impressed me the most. I don't play MMORPGs so I can't comment on those. I haven't been as much into Japanese RPGs this gen. Aside from ARPG stuff like PSO, I guess Final Fantasy X-2 would be the one I liked most. I haven't played Paper Mario 2 yet though.

Fighting - I'm not into the traditional ones much anymore so Super Smash Bros. Melee is my pick.

Shooter - Gridrunner++

Gun - Time Crisis 3

Racing - My tastes are very arcade for this genre so I would say Crazy Taxi or OutRun 2.

Strategy - Pikmin 2(it almost feels like an action/adventure game though)

Man I always write too much crap.

Im just gonna go ahead and list my favorite games of the past 5 years, genres be damned. Its increasingly getting blurrier, which is good but still makes stuff like this useless.

Heh. Yeah, there's no concrete answer as to how many generations of hardware there have been as definitions vary. It would be nice if the current console gen about to end had a good name. I'm so used to just calling it "current gen".

I think the desire to list games without the genres has more to do with just how dominant some genres have been than a true blurring. For instance, picking a winner between God of War, Ninja Gaiden, and the Devil May Cry series is hard as shit, as they are probably all in the top 10 games of the generation.

I'd say there are three before 8-bit (NES/Master System/7800):

The first is the truly prehistoric stuff like Odyssey and Fairchild; things that we'd barely recognize as videogames & had you putting transparent overlays on your tv & other assorted wackiness.

Next is the 2600/Odyssey 2 gen, where you start to see reasonable facsimiles of arcade games, spaceships that look like spaceships, even some impressive effects by the end in things like Solaris.

And following that is the Intellivision/Colecovision/5200 gen - I'd probably toss Vectrex in there too. These systems were clearly designed to be a step up on the previous stuff.

8 & 16 bit are pretty clear cut. The only real debate is where you stick PC Engine, which is 16 bit as far as I'm concerned because of the visuals it produced, CPU be damned.

Once you make the transition to 32 bit - N64 (forget what the system's called), Playstation, Saturn, 3D0, PC FX, you get a couple of 'tweeners - namely Jaguar, 32X & Neo Geo. I'll be generous & toss them in the next gen rather than calling them 16 bitters, though I'm not sure 32X really lives up to its name - it's more of a glorified Super FX style accelerator. Maybe it would've been more apparent what it could do had it lived longer.

And then the current gen - the only debate here is whether Dreamcast belongs. It's a debate which I say that nearly the system's entire library being ported to PS2/GC/Xbox usually with no graphical upgrades and nobody blinking solves. DC belongs, no question.


So aside from a few stragglers that found themselves in the gaps between the major systems, you can point out 7 pretty well defined generations up to now.

The "finally, no more crap 3D" gen? I've seen people call it 128-bit, but that's not all that accurate.

I would agree with most of that except I would put the Intellivision in the same gen as the 2600 as they were the two major rivals. The Channel F is a hard one to place as being the first programmable it's closer in many ways to the 2600 than stuff like the first Odyssey but on the other hand it(and the Studio II) died too quickly to really be proper competitors with Atari.

A while back, in a thread on the Gaming Age Forum, I posted my own rundown of the generations of video game console hardware. I concluded there were seven distinct generations:

1st: Dedicated (self-contained) game consoles like Magnavox Odyssey, Atari Home Pong, Coleco Telstar, etc.
2nd: Fairchild Channel F, Atari 2600, Magnavox Odyssey 2, Bally Astrocade, Mattel Intellivision
3rd: ColecoVision, Atari 5200, GCE Vectrex
4th: NES, SMS, Atari 7800
5th: Genesis, TurboGrafx-16, Neo-Geo, SNES
6th: 3DO, Jaguar, Saturn, PlayStation, Nintendo 64

I also realize I omitted lots of other systems, but I tried to limit the list to mainly the major systems.

Strategy: I never liked RTS's much let alone PC gaming in general. I don't think I played any current gen ones at all.

That's exactly how I would do it too. Some people don't consider dedicated machines to be consoles but I think they qualify in the context of console hardware generations.

This is the first generation where I didn't play a wide berth of games. Most of that was due to the fact that all the games were sequels or remakes and time constraints.

I read an interesting stat the other day ... out of the top 50 games of 2004 only 1 was an original property. Fable. That is it. Everything else was a remake, sequel etc etc. That's not ragging on the producers of games, more its a reflection on the gaming public. So when a big company sees those kinds of stats, it's no wonder EA does what it does.

This has been a generation of convergence. Even great titles like HL2 are more an amalgamation of genres rather than a new game. On the console side, Halo is also a watered down FPS for mass consumption. It's completely playable and fun .. but there just seems to be something lacking. The same can be said of the great RPG's of this generation (Tales of Symphonia and Star Oceans 3) ... its more like playing "RPG's Greatest Hits" rather than playing something totally new and organic. It's satisfying on one level .. but there is no great love for the game when you are finished because you have done it all before.


The only game this generation that deserves any credit is GTA. Completely original, addictive and stylized. A game that created its own genre. The influence this game has is still being seen today (most recently Ultimate Hulk).

The only game I haven't played that might change my mind is RE4. We'll see.

I don't know why people expect new genres to constantly be invented. Gaming, like most mediums tend to do as time goes on, has progressed past that point. We're in a period of refining genres, not defining them. The NES and Playstation eras couldn't continue indefinitely.

Some clipping issues? Maybe you played a different GTA3/VC/SA than I did. If I ever feel the burning desire to credit the design for something worthwhile, I'll go to the first GTA games (they were first and not miserable).

LAWL! Spoken like a true elitist. The first games had terrible controls, especially for shooting, and the stories were incredibly stupid (especially the second one). The only saving grave was that you could use the trigger buttons to fart and burp whenever you wanted to. Shame that got old after, I dunno, five seconds?

Oh, and the missions were either insanely easy or extremely too hard. This was because of the terrible controls, especially for the motorcycles. It also didn't help that there was absolutely no in-game map and you had to rely on the crude P.O.S. map that game in the jewel case. Yeah, that's a real help when you're crusing down the freeway.

EDIT: And the charater animations were about as primative as you'd find on a Playstation game. I refuse to believe that a yellow smuge with flailing pixels was the best they could do for the main character.

gta 3. the idea is cool and possibly groundbreaking. the delivery is complete ass tho.

I'd rather have a game with good design and poor implementation than a game with terrible design and decent implementation.

Either way, though, I agree that the original GTAs don't get enough credit. Neither does Driver, for that matter.

Hmm? Wasn't the Atari 2600 an 8-bit console though? What seperated the consoles was the amount of RAM and the video processors.

I think single game non-microprocessor based systems like Pong, Oddessey, etc are the first gen, Atari and INTV are 2nd gen, NES/SMS/7800 are 3rd.

Stuff like Coleco, Vectrex, Jaguar, 3DO, etc don't really fit into a generation. They're halfway points and weren't popular enough to define a generation of systems.

There's generally something that defines a generation. 2nd gen was defined by interchangable games. 3rd gen was defined by smooth scrolling. Gen 4 by larger palettes, gen 5 by 3D, etc

I remember seeing reviews for the DC version in Gamers republic and thinking that it looked rad. I came very close to buying the PS2 one off ebay less than a week ago. Is the ps2 port good?
