Actually, the pre-ordering really isn't that different from Insurance from the point of view of risk management.

You buy life insurance because you know there is risk that when you die, you have nothing for your spouse/beneficiary.

You pre-order because you think there is risk that you won't be able to find the game on release day, etc.

I totally agree with you that most games are so readily available that pre-ordering is really pointless. But we all have different risk tolerance, that's why such program exists to take advantage (or provide a peace of mind benefit) to those who are less risk tolerant.

When we talk about interest accrual, we are talking from the individual/consumer's point of view, not the company (which can aggregrate and make $$ off of it). From an individual's POV, $5 isn't a significant amount of opportunity cost/loss of interest to matter to anyone (and if it does, then he/she shouldn't be spending $$ on frivolous things like videogames to begin with).

Its fairly easy to find savings accounts that offer 3%+ interest. I have one of them.

Just got a memory card two pack and some blank tapes from Best Buy, and then went and got a record of JFK speeches from the Salvation Army. Yoshi, a mere 80 hours wouldn't cut it.

Its a matter of principle. Theres only one guy I want to benefit from my money, and thats me. Things go here and there so its not always possible but why give GameStop free money for doing fuck all, even if its a penny or a dime?
