Those are the rumoured specs (and have been since E3 pretty much), but I'd raise the bullshit flag reading PS3 news from an XBOX site myself.

If it's OPM, that's interesting, but I read in Computer Gaming World that Sony's demos at E3 were being run by two 7800's in SLI mode.

Meaningless. My Xbox is pathetic compared to my PC, yet it still cranks out awesome HD games that look spectacular at constant high framerates.

If your Xbox is even in the same league as your PC, it's because your PC sucks, not because the Xbox is good. This topic, even if it isn't true today, will be realized about a year after the PS3 hits. If you blink, you'll miss the time when consoles are equal to PCs in each generation.

Nothing at either of those links proves this isn't true, except for an old quote from an Nvidia guy, which gets cancelled out by this being a new quote from an Nvidia guy. Not that I'd be shocked to see it disproven, but since I don't even think they've manufactured an RSX yet, it's entirely believable they slightly downgraded the performance to save cost - it'd still be the most powerful GPU in any of the next generation consoles.

This is the most important thing. Xbox specs are ancient if you tried to compare them straight up to PCs (733 Mhz, like no Ram), and yet it runs Doom 3 & Half Life 2 just fine.

Even if RSX is slightly less powerful than 7800, that doesn't mean there'll be PCs producing better visuals than PS3 this winter.

I said it once and I'll say it again. The difference graphically in all the next gen systems from each other will be about as different as they are now. Which is minimal.

The 360 could be twice as powerful as PS3 but all the games will look damn near the same.

Whatever the RSX turns out to be, without some major re-engineering on Nvidia's part, the 360 GPU will be better than the RSX, all of Nvidia's other GPUs, and even the next ATI GPU hands down (better than the RSX, though not necessarily faster). Having said that, I doubt the RSX will be a current Nvidia GPU, Sony isn't paying millions to license soon-to-be-old technology.

NVIDIA contacted us today after we published the "PlayStation 3 GPU Less Powerful than GeForce 7800" story based on a report found at The Inquirer. Derek Perez, NVIDIA's Director of Public Relations, was kind enough to provide us the actual paragraph from the September issue of PSM. Here is the information from the blurb in question:

There's no doubting that NVIDIA's new 7800GTX is the ultimate in PC graphics technology. The card's G70 GPU, which is more than twice as powerful as two of NVIDIA's previous top-of-the-line 6800 boards, shares a lot of similar workings with the PS3's RSX chip - only it isn't as fast. Oh, and it retails for $599.
The article actually says the GeForce 7800 GTX is not as fast as the RSX graphics processing unit that NVIDIA developed for the PlayStation 3.

We apologize for any confusion and we'd like to thank NVIDIA for providing the exact info.

Aren't the consoles always more graphically powerful than the PCs at launch? It may only last for a short period of time (I think N64 was eclipsed in 1-2 months), but they're not weaker at launch.

Does anybody seriously think the PS3 will be graphically weaker than the 360?

I'm not sure where people get this console superiority thing from.
It hasn't been the case for the last two generations.
PCs have always and will always be superior, even at a consoles launch.
That's not to say that consoles aren't better than most PCs for at least part of their lifespan.

that wasnt the point.

anyway im wondering how long itll take for the devs to really wrap their heads around the multicored processors. most of what were seeing now is just because of the raw hardware. i wonder if they even WILL get a chance to figure out how to get the most from the cpu's before this new gen dies off.

The difference between the XB1 and the PS3 is that the latter has a monster CPU to coexist with the variant of a near-top-of-the-line PC GPU

Consoles can afford to be slightly slower than PCs because they're dedicated gaming machines (well this is the case now, less and less, but you get my point).

Also, certain games just need to be on consoles, a PC just won't work. I think PC games just benefit so greatly from the quality, high resolution monitors.

I have to agree with this.

My eyes have been spoiled so badly by playing PC games at high resolutions, and especially at high refresh rates, that I just can't stand playing games on a shitty 60Hz tv.

Anything below 85Hz on a CRT looks flickery to me now, and 640x480 is getting really old.

I'm really looking forward to playing PS3 on a true (1920x1080) high-definition LCD.

There's no denying that, but unless hybrid shader programs become the norm, I don't think it'll be that big of a deal.

Developers will be stuck with a shader configuration that may not have as many of a certain type of shader as they would have liked, but it's not like they haven't run into that before.

Logically unified shaders are a big part of Windows Graphic Foundation 2, which is essentially the general graphics API of the upcoming Vista. DirectX 10 I think will probably require logically unified shaders. If there's a next big thing in graphics, this is arguably it. ATI is doing it now, Nvidia has shrugged it off for the forseeable future.

There are some things you just can't do in real-time with discrete pipelines. The current consoles are fairly similar in vertex processing capabilities, and not too far apart in pixel processing capabilities. The disparity between games taking full advantage of unified shader GPUs versus discrete shader GPUs will be far far greater, like night and day.
