Once more, I am so happy I am not working at EB anymore.
Console launches were a huge pain in the ass. HUGE. Black Friday, even bigger pain in the ass. Combine the two? Jesus... It's almost suicidal.
As for me, well, the stupid thing still has no games at launch that I'm craving and the PS2 and DS have more than I think I can afforid. Pass for now, maybe come back later.
I feel bad for you guys...I always see the crazy news stories on tv about the nutty mobs of people looking for deals on black friday....
I'm not sure the timing's especially relevant to first day sales - initial shipments will likely sell out regardless. That's just the last possible day they can launch in order to ensure that software will at least be there for people to buy even if they can't get a system that day. It also ensures maximum visibility for their prodcut as everyone sees people walking out of stores with these things.
But this isn't some intelligent masterstroke or anything - I'm sure if Microsoft had their way they'd launch two weeks earlier so their second shipments would be there for folks who haven't preordered to pick up. I believe this has everything to do with getting the software done right - or at least, as right as possible. They obviously want to do everything they can to ensure Oblivion & PGR3 will be ready for launch.
Has this even been officially confirmed by Microsoft? I think working that day is hell enough. I'm afraid to even think about trying to sell this thing on that Friday. Though if it does come out, that pretty much guarantees I'll be playing it all day Thanksgiving Day. BOOYEAH! I'm still betting on a Monday launch right before Thanksgiving though.

My boss went to a recent Toys R Us directors(head managers) meeting in Orlando and one of the vendors was Microsoft with some Xbox 360 kiosks. She said it ruled, too bad she doesnt know jack about games. Dumbass didnt even take a picture!
So yeah its possible we may see some kiosks soon but doubtfull. Maybe the end of Sept early Oct I'm thinking. Not that anyone cares but PSP kiosks are finally shipping out to stores in Sept.

Why?
Because you would get a ton of free publicity from news stations showing all the people lined up outside of stores to pick up the new console (Remember all the free pub that Halo 2 got?). Your product would have 1 week before the biggest shopping day of the year to be seen as the "IT" product of the year. Now that line of people will be dwarfed by the mobs waiting outside doors on BF morning.
But like others have said .. it doesn't really matter. Whoever was going to buy it .. are going to buy it. It doesn't matter what day it was released on.
It's a good move to capture some of the mainstream audience, but it's not very friendly to the "hardcore gamers" who want their systems on launch day. I guess most who really want the system have pre-ordered by now, anyway.
But I'm not going out there.
