have any foriegn countries pledged any aid? I've heard Canada is doing some, but we help almost everyone. It'd be nice to get some help from them for once.
I'll put this one here, since It wont degrade into OMGRACISM bullshit.

I also heard on the news this morning that a lot of cops are just plain quitting. Either because of it being too dangerous, having families that might need them, or a multitude of other reasons. Prett shitty situation.
So, I assume that the entirety of New Orleans is just going to be evacuated and off-limits in a month or so, so work can be done to repair/clean it up? Thats what someone in class told me today....
They had guns. And if MSNBC is going to declare they are cops, chances are quite good they are.Quote:

IMO the number of people like this has increased because of NAFTA. The south is being stripped of its basic labor production jobs. A lot of people don't have a problem with that becuase they want the US to be made up of service and highly skilled knowledge related jobs. The thing is, there are still a lot of people who can't work those types of jobs. When you send a person's job to mexico, or god knows where they don't have another one to replace it. They then ride a long road to the poverity and life style that makes people act the way you are seeing these people act on telivision.
Our government really needs to look at what is going on in NO and wake up. The US needs basic factory jobs so that the undereducated can work and live a pretty good life.
Stop reaching. I live a good days drive from NO.Quote:

Well, a great deal of the people who live there are black, BUT it's only the ones that are inarticulate and poor who staid. Everyone else left. Did you like forget all the news shots of miles and miles of 4 lane traffic of people leaving?Quote:

Pretty much everyone I've ever met from New Orleans was incomprehensible to me. To the extent that it was a while before I even realized they were speaking English. Maybe it's easier for you to understand since you're closer to there and here it more, but I think "inarticulate" is a generalization that has been corroborated pretty well in my experience.Quote:

Funny how we mobilized 140,000 men and sent them to Iraq in less time than it's taken us to send help to New Orleans. I guess that's just how the government acts when there's no political agenda involved.
Frankly, I don't see why anyone would want to develop there; at least, the areas below sea level. I think that once is enough to prove that its geological problems are very real. I can imagine the historical areas such as bourbon street being preserved and restored, but the rest of the city is a definite toss-up.Quote:

Exactly why did people settle there in the first place? What made these people think to themselves "hey, i want to live way under the sea level, and by the ocean"
Maybe it was a good location for a harbor, or maybe they were dutch.
Yeah, but most of these people disregarded the warnings and stayed home. This wasn't like the Tsunami, where people didn't know what was coming. I'd be willing to bet that some people were waiting for the damage so that they could loot.Quote:

Since everyone is moving down to Houston TX, for the time being, I wonder if the national demographic will change for our area. Let’s say some of the people for NO move from Houston to McAllen which is predominantly a Hispanic area. That would be interesting. I’m guessing everyone will probably just find another city in Louisiana to live though.
Wow, that's pretty bad. Grown people without licenses and/or vehicles is a strange thought.Quote:

The more you see of what is going on down there, the more of an utter disgrace it is. It simply baffles me that a city in our own country can't be helped sooner after the hurricane hit. Helicopters couldn't have airlifted in food and water sooner? Evacuation vehicles couldn't have gotten in there sooner? Like was brought up on 20/20 tonight, if reporters were able to get in there, why the hell couldn't more rescue units get in there?
It also is infuriating to hear things like people from FEMA saying they didn't know how bad things were in places like the Superdome or whatever it is called. What the hell do we have organizations for handling emergency situations for if they don't know as much as my local news channel?
And going on it being a city in our own country, it's a BIG city. It wasn't like this happened in the boonies. It's a major city and still very little was done.
Also, I've never been one to attack Bush - I'm not a huge fan, but I'm also not the type to spend all of my time and energy bitching about every little thing he does. However, I lost a huge amount of respect for him over his comments on the looting. Obviously, I don't support people taking things like DVDs or watches or whatnot just because they think they have an excuse to. But to say there should be a zero tolerance policy, when many of those people just wanted basics like food, water, medicine, things like that, utterly ridiculous. You can't lump those things together.
It's one of the most well known cities on the planet.
New Orleans isn't as big of a city as most people think. Of course, that isn't an excuse--that's just me saying that you would probably be surprised.
I hate how this thing has totally turned political, as if it was some sort of surprise that this was going to happen. I remember when Andrew hit when Clinton was president. There didn't seem to be any movement to fix the situation and prevent any super damage from future hurricanes after that had happened.
This is what the mayor of the town that I was raised in had to say:
To the Citizens of Slidell,
I am urging you not to return to the City of Slidell at this time. There was extensive flooding in the city, and the work crews, police, and utility companies are working around the clock to restore electricity, gas and water to our City. The presence of more people will only hinder their efforts.
Cleco has brought over 1,000 workers to the area, and they have already begun the tedious process of cutting trees that have fallen and/or been tangled up in power lines. Their crews are working throughout Slidell. They expect the city's power to be fully restored in 6 - 8 weeks.
City crews have begun cleaning the streets of debris and are working to restore water to the area. They are repairing many broken pipes in the process.
The City of Slidell has not had the widespread looting problem as seen in New Orleans and other areas. We have had isolated incidents and have arrested 8 people. I have a zero tolerance policy for looters and have instructed the police department to use deadly force if necessary.
Police Chief Freddy Drennan is receiving assistance from 15 police officers from other states to ensure the safety and security of our City. In addition, I have requested additional armed National Guard troops to protect the City of Slidell. We have issued a 9:00 p.m. curfew, but that is subject to change on my order.
Some schools did take on water, and we don't expect the schools to reopen until October 1, at a minimum.
Again, I am telling residents to please stay out of the area. The work crews, utility companies, and police officers are making significant progress to restore the city's water, gas, and electricity. If people begin to come back and traffic the streets, they will only slow down the process.
Stay safe where you are. There is no water, no electricity, no gas, no food. You cannot survive in Slidell as it is now. I know this is frustrating, but please give us the opportunity to fix this City. Your homes and property are secure. The Slidell Police and National Guard troops will make sure of that.
Finally, all non-essential City of Slidell personnel are now on administrative leave until called upon. As soon as it is safe to come home to Slidell, you are expected to report back to work.
Thank you and stay safe,
Mayor Ben Morris
It is a failure on the part of goverment, but I agree that this administration's failure is not that much different from past ones. The inability for our goverment to handle situations like these effeciently and effectively is saddening.Quote:

It'd be weird if they just did like sci-fi, post nuclear movies and just built a wall around it and called it a no mans land. They really need to fix them levee's cause the whole place is filling up like a bowl of cereal.

Lou Dobbs and Jack Cafferty on CNN both had roughly the same point (correlating race and class with the government's disfunctional initial response) as Kanye way back on Thursday morning, and they said it candidly on live TV also.
And just to add, they're seasoned news anchors, they didn't mince words or stumble, and even though they didn't mention Bush by name, they were a hell of a lot more acidic than Kanye, they ripped the government a new one.

Kanye West is an idiot with an ego the size of Texas. The government definitely fucked up the relief effort, but to say that "Bush hates black people" just confirms his rabid case of foot-in-mouth disease. But then, that's more or less evident every time West opens his mouth.
I feel bad for Mike Myers having to share the screen with him. Mike was obviously reading his cues, but Kanye was just going off on some other tangent.Quote:

My God I just watched the live thing with Kanye west. It's funny how they just cut to Chris Tucker after he said. Thats probably the most stupid thing he ever did in his life.
Kanye
At least he's one of the few famous people being honest with the media about it right now.
No one expected 9/11, and it took less than five days to see a response from America. No one expected the tsunami, and again, America responded as soon as possible (in less than five days). MANY of our troops, including National Guard, are over in Iraq right now doing many of the things that should have been done in New Orleans on Wednesday. We shouldn't be JUST NOW getting them relief and getting buses to the people in the Superdome. Even if they weren't prepared, a much quicker reaction was needed. The presence of the president, congress, and other political leaders was needed. Rescue missions were needed on Tuesday and Wednesday. Relief efforts should have been seen on Tuesday and Wednesday. NONE of this was seen until yesterday. Those people in N.O. (and in other parts of the Gulf that was destroyed) feel ignored and abandoned. Kanye spoke from the heart and felt like Bush ignored and abandoned those people - poor Blacks who didn't have the means to get out before the storm hit. After only coming in on Friday, having some nice photo-ops, and only a few hours ago signing into law $10.5 billion dollar relief, these people are NOT justified in probably thinking that their government doesn't care?
The way this was handled is truly an embarassment for our country, not only because the rest of the world is wondering why the response has been so slow, but because they see the racial factor - and class factor - in this as well.
Yep, I read about that.Quote:
