Sega’s ‘Virtua Tennis’ and Konami’s ‘Metal Gear Ac!d’ debut at No4 and No5 respectively, holding off EA’s big PSP release ‘Need for Speed: Underground Rivals’ which is a new entry at No6. UK based forums are consistantly reporting that its sold poorly and the shelves are stacked full with systems. Many stores had trouble selling more than two systems on the launch day.

Come on dude, have you no foresight? What does the country of origin have to do with this being significant news (in the videogame world, obviously)? Europe could decide which system becomes the market leader world wide, and more importantly which gets the lion's share of software support, as I'm sure you know the very similar situation between the Xbox and GameCube. The point is that you make a lot of these thinly veiled anti-DS pro-PSP threads and it's becoming a nuisance where it was just kind of funny.

And hardware sales isn't what pushes development for a system, it's software sales. A large user installment is nice, but they're not leaps ahead of Nintendo (not yet, and probably won't be if they take the lead) enough to get true bragging rights. Not to mention Nintendo already has a new Gameboy in the oven. I don't mind the PSP selling well, infact I hope it does, but we have a PSP thread. We didn't need a Nintendogs thread either, but atleast it's not the same person making all of those threads.

I see a lot of crying in this thread.

It definitely will be interesting to see how PSP fairs in Europe. Right now, DS sales worldwide are considerably higher than PSP, but it's been impossible to guess how much of that had to do with the lack of launch in one region. Now we'll know.

It's not thinly veiled. All I do is post news or screens or whatever. Whether I throw a smilie in there at the end or not shouldn't have anything to do with it. I'm not trying to hide what I like or which I think is better. And I don't mind if you think I'm a douche bag, or whether you think I'm biased or not. It's just my opinion, just as you have yours. It all comes down to the games, anyway, and it doesn't matter what platform it's on, if the DS (or whichever other platform) has good games, I'll play them and be more than happy to praise them. Hell, look at the "what are you playing" thread. Other than HL: Blue Shift, all I've been playing since their release has been Advance Wars DS and Nintendogs.

That said, if you want me to stop making threads, I'll stop. But shit, have fun posting in the one thread per day allowable by TNL, while discouraging whoever created it from ever making threads in the future. :/

Anyway, Europe's most successful launch. That's news. I remember PSP's sitting on the shelves for a week in the US, and then promptly dissappearing. Dead pixels, short battery life, UMD nonsense.

I agree with everything you said Shidoshi, the problem is that the PSP's game library is putrid and Sony has said a bunch of really annoying stuff lately. Some people are content to use the PSP as a media player and sprinkle in games of Pure or Lumines and that's cool, I just personally expect more when I've been given notice that the thing is going to pull handheld gaming out of the ghetto (BTW if Nintendogs is the ghetto, I've been spending way too much time drinking 40's and stealing microwaves). I adore the PSP's screen, when they revamp the system (push the inside buttons off the sides of the screen and do something about the battery life) and the good games start coming I'll be first in line to get one. I thought the DS was a joke until Kirby came out, and a couple months later I'm in love with the thing.

Eh it's just Andy being his usual self.

I think he enjoys both systems (DS now, I mean look at his avatar) but maybe likes the PSP a bit more and wants it to do better so that he can finally get some more good games to play.

There is absolutely no problem with the inside buttons being on the screen. Doesn't change the functionality at all, whatsoever, and if they weren't the system would be bigger than it has to be. I don't find the battery life to be prohibitive of using it when I want to, either. These were all complaints I had about the PSP before I bought one... now that I have one I see that they're not such a big issue.

The software problem, however, yeah... that one's for real.

The inside buttons thing isn't awful but sometimes I do feel the slight click when they clear the screen and if I spent 250 bucks on it I'd be really obsessive about it, as it is I'm going crazy trying to prevent scratching the DS touch screen. Same thing with the battery life, it doesn't make the thing unplayable but for the price it bothers me. I don't have much faith in Sony hardware to begin with, part of me is waiting to see if people start complaining about dead UMD drives or blue screens of death en masse. The thing is gorgeous but it just feels so fragile, the DS is ugly when closed but it seems like I could spike it on concrete and it would still work. Besides, Sony hasn't released a system yet that they haven't remodeled so you know it's coming sooner or later.

BTW you can replace the top screen yourself pretty cheaply, the part is at www.nintendo.com . I'm not sure how much a PSP replacement battery costs but I've seen them online.

The PSP I gotta give props to looking slick, everyone knows its a cool media player but the less stuff I have to buy for my system to keep in good shape the better. Like Spo said, I have enough trouble trying to keep my DS scratch free but it's gonna happen anyway so PSP is def more prone to it but eh whatever. I'm not going to continue to harp on it because I'm probably going to eventually want one once the lineup of games looks great.

Don't get me wrong, I like the DS a lot, but there's a whole bunch of things I would have liked for them to do differently. The face buttons could be bigger and a little farther apart, and it'd be really nice to be able to exit the system options or PictoChat without restarting... or to even change games with the power on. I was fucking floored when I tried at the system menu and my DS crashed. With the button layout as it is, I find playing GBA games to be irritating. The Y=B and B=A button layout should be an option in any future revisions. It's sad that playing GBC games on PSP feels a lot more natural to me than playing GBA games on DS.

Still, though, not the biggest complaints. The system's quite nice, but for GBA games, I'd still rather use the SP.

Wouldn't mind some chicken, either.

Different games are different. It all depends on how much data is being transfered and how much battery it needs to read the disc. Play wipeout with a full battery will differ from playing GT4 or GTA3 or any game that requires alot of reading of the disk.

So your saying you think GT4 and GTA3 will last less than 2:42!!! That would outright suck, but GT4 is the PSP game for me, even if I can only play it for 1:30 at a time.

Yes. Right now, games are currently running at 222mhz. GT4 is supposed to run at 333mhz due to all that graphics. Since its using more power to run and more times to read the UMD, it uses more battery thus lowering play time. There was a rumor that Sony was releasing a new battery pack. That I'm not sure. There are numerous external battery packs that adds an additional 6-12 hours.

The PSP will last forever playing an emulator and a really long time watching a ripped video if the quality is kind of grainy (like MST3K)

What's funny to me is I'll check the battery life and it'll say '6:30 battery left'. Even with emus it's never lasted that long.

Yeah, no it doesn't. I pretty much only use my PSP anymore for playing Puzzle Bobble SNES (endless mode rocks me), and my PSP's battery certainly does not last "forever." Not even close, and certainly not an impressive amount of time.

Mutts is cute. It has some nice George Herriman (Krazy Kat) references and seems to be the only newer comic that could sit with the classics. Zits isn't too bad and Non-sequiter and Rose is Rose are good from time to time. I'm sure there are a few more that aren't bad.

The old comic strips were really charming. The ones that just kept going should've stopped long ago, save maybe Gasoline Alley and a few others. It's been years since i've seen a paper that carries it, but at least the characters age. Anyways, it's nice to see that Blondie was hotter in the pre-surgery days.

By the whole webcomics offer better art, writing and more colour than syndication at the moment. But they're also different markets. To us it's boring tripe, to old geisures like frostwolf and Seven Force (I think, could be Master of 7s) that might be hilarious.

Anyway I think I came down on you too hard Andy. Sorry. But fuck, it always seems like you're giving the DS an elbow in the ribs at every chance.
