Sega partners with Petroglyph for new RTS.

SEGA of America, Inc. and SEGA, Europe Ltd. today announced a partnership with developer Petroglyph to create an original Real-Time Strategy (RTS) franchise for the PC. Most Petroglyph team members are former employees of Westwood Studios, developers of Blade Runner, Eye of the Beholder, Dune 2, and Command & Conquer. They are currently wrapping up work on Star Wars: Empire at War.

Petroglyph will collaborate with SEGA on creating a modern military/ Sci-Fi themed RTS franchise. Both companies will announce product and release details at a later date.

"SEGA is moving aggressively toward a leadership position in the RTS category and the team at Petroglyph is behind some of the finest games in the genre," said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America. "We continue to rebuild SEGA as a leading publisher by collaborating with only the very best developers in North America and Europe."

"Coincidentally, this deal marks the ten year anniversary of the blockbuster RTS series which most of the Petroglyph team worked on during our time at Westwood Studios," said Michael Legg, President of Petroglyph. "We are extremely excited about our partnership with SEGA, as it will enable us to advance the RTS genre while creating fun and exciting experiences for gamers worldwide."

Man, SEGA is cranking on all cylinders lately. Partnerships with Monolith, Sports Interactive, Silicon Knights, Psuedo Interactive, buying Creative Assembly, and now Petroglyph. All on top of their best internal lineup since Dreamcast.

Go SEGA. :)

I'm not surprised by diff's response because he hates Sega racers but I'm curious as to what Yoshi didn't like about OutRun 2. It's everything about classic OutRun modernized perfectly.

Back on topic, Petroglyph seems to have some people with good RTS experience so the game should be quality. I don't care that Sega happens to be the publisher.

I think it's an interesting note. I mean, SEGA has not only been sliding down lately in thier game quality, but thier publishing has ben pretty poor aswell. It, in my opinion, shows another indicator that they are on the upswing. Which is something I think everyone would enjoy seeing.

I have a feeling with all these western partnerships that the people of Sega of America are actually given the chance to make real decisions instead of Sega of Japan holding them by the balls the entire time.

I like Outrun 2, but Sega didn't even publish it in the US so it probably doesn't count.

It's not a bad game. I just wouldn't call it "excellent". Part of it is just personal preference. Every Sega game that is not Daytona starts out having to prove itself to me. Some fly on their own, like Rally and Initial D. Others just don't have "it". OutRun2 falls in the second group for me.

OK, I agree. I should have said "excellent for what it is, a remake of a classic pick up and play arcade racer with no depth."
