i hate how iPod is used as an attention-getting term when it really isn't what the story is about. Headphones make you deaf no matter what they're attached to. The term Pod cast is also incredibly annoying.

I only use big headphones that block outside noise, so I never have to set the volume very high, and no one else has to hear what I'm listening to.
It's only the use of headphones at an excessive volume that will harm your hearing.

I've heard people complain that ipods are too quiet...

I think I get enough ear damage from my bass amp.

Funny thing is that I think I get more hearing damage from my mp3 player than I do playing guitar with other musicians in a small room.

I mean it's simple -- ear buds. They kill your ears. Anyone knows this. I mean jamming guitar atleast has the benefit of surrounding air, walls, etc. to absorb some of the noise, when you jam those little earbuds in, turn up the base, and listen for hours, your ears are getting assaulted.

If you have to listen to iPods or any other MP3 players, just get headphones that do not sit directly in your ear and keep it at a decent level. Or, just manage to get by in life without one, cause seriously, why do people feel the need to stay unplugged from the rest of the world all the time? I ride the bus home from work, and always read, but all I see around me are people either on cell phones or absorbed in their iPods, maybe it's a way to keep separate from everyone else, but then again, my reading could be considered the same...
