I only use big headphones that block outside noise, so I never have to set the volume very high, and no one else has to hear what I'm listening to.
It's only the use of headphones at an excessive volume that will harm your hearing.

I think I get enough ear damage from my bass amp.
Funny thing is that I think I get more hearing damage from my mp3 player than I do playing guitar with other musicians in a small room.

If you have to listen to iPods or any other MP3 players, just get headphones that do not sit directly in your ear and keep it at a decent level. Or, just manage to get by in life without one, cause seriously, why do people feel the need to stay unplugged from the rest of the world all the time? I ride the bus home from work, and always read, but all I see around me are people either on cell phones or absorbed in their iPods, maybe it's a way to keep separate from everyone else, but then again, my reading could be considered the same...
