Did PS3 Deliver The Knockout Punch To 360?
I'd include Revolution, but they have to actually show games first before people can start making informed opinions.
I tried to come up with a less sensational thread title/question but it's late and my brain isn't working at full speed. So cut me some slack here, I know MS isn't going anywhere with their warchest and this gen's not decided yet.
But after all their talk about Xbox 1.5 and 500 times the power of PS2, TGS was Sony's big chance to put up or shut up and win the mindshare war before 360 actually launches. They did it to the poor old Dreamcast, and they pretty much blew Microsoft away at E3 this year.
So my question is: were you impressed? After seeing realtime visuals did you come away thinking PS3 was the more desirable console? Did Sony deliver on their promises?
For my part, I thought Microsoft underwhelmed more than Sony impressed - the Frame City Killer trailer showed models that still don't look too far from current gen, Ridge Racer looked very solid but not spectacular, and Bizarre Creations is saying they can either have PGR 3 out at launch with 30 fps, or a couple of months down the road at 60. MS also didn't have anything new or interesting to announce, and didn't manage to show any of Sakaguchi's stuff.
Sony did okay, but I wasn't like OMG THE EARTH HAS TILTED ON ITS AXIS. The PS3 release list had very little to get me excited, but that has as much to do with my personal taste in games as anything. MGS4 looked beautiful, but I know how that story ends...with me buying the game and wondering why after 2 hours of repetitive sneaking and endless corny dialogue. But it also cemented the notion that PS3 in the right hands has the potential to be a good deal more visually impressive than 360. I'm really wishing Microsoft hadn't been stupid and had gone for the technological edge rather than just costing less.
