50 cent was a gangster back in the day. he's also black. 50 cent + black = gangster. but at the same time, why is this particular gangster black and not white or latino? why isn't he of mexican descent or even from the badlands of Turkistan?

Because now-a-days "Black" and "Gangster" are almost synonymous, just like back in the day when "Gangster" was synonymous with "Guy in pin stripe suit and hat coming out of a 'pet shop' drunk."
