Dawn of War: Dark Crusade (formerly Winter Assault Official Thread)

Winter Assault hits stores this week. If you haven't checked out DoW, now's the time. Relic has added a fifth race, the Imperial Guard, plus a new campaign that lets you play as four different races (the Space Marines sit this one out). DoW was recently added to the WCG roster of games, so it's clearly earning some respect as a competitive RTS. It's not yet up to Blizzard standards in terms of balance, but it's getting there (particularly with the release of the new 1.4 patch).

I'll probably grab this one when they release it with the basic game. I played the demo when it first came out but I wanted a game that was less sci fi at that time so I picked up Act of War instead. I'm always looking for a new RTS though, so this might be the one for me once they package em like I said.

Come on, there's got to be someone at TNL interested in this game.

You fence-sitters should check it out. The sample campaign mission is pretty cool; you get to play as both the Imperial Guard and the Eldar.

I seriously need to get this. I got the original DoW when it came out, but it didn't have a CD-key and returning the game would've been a bitch since I was still in Germany at the time and ordered the game online.

Rather than take up yet another new thread for a game few at TNL care about, I'll just repurpose this one.

There's a second expansion coming out for DoW, with not one but TWO new playable factions: Tau and Necrons. Personally I wish Relic would concentrate on balancing the five races they've already got, but hey! Cool glowy skeletons!

A couple notes on Dark Crusade. It's only $30, and it's a stand alone expansion -- meaning you do not need to own DoW or the first expansion, Winter Assault, to play the single player campaign. You can also play skirmish mode with all seven playable races. You can even play online with Tau and Necrons! To play online with the other races you need to own the previous games. You can either pick up the original DoW alone for $10-20, which adds the four original races (Space Marines, Chaos, Orks, Eldar), or DoW Gold for $20-30 which includes Winter Assault and unlocks the Imperial Guard for online play.

So if you liked Company of Heroes you owe it to yourself to check this series out. It's cheap, and the online play is better balanced than ever before.

I'm still trying to work out my favorite race. Right now, I'm having fun with the Imperial Guard. Their vehicles are a lot of fun, and they have a lot of crazy units.

Plus I get a kick out of executing my Guardsmen to make 'em shoot faster.
