Eh, the keychains are pretty lame, but I'll take the demo. Thanks for the heads up.
I got the DQ8 demo the other day, there's an amazing amount of gameplay on there. There are two choices to play, Story or Battle. Story is about 2 hours of wandering around town, talking to people, exploring the countryside, spelunking a cave with a boss fight at the end, and then completing the mini-quest.
I didn't get around to doing much of the battle option, but it give you more characters at a higher level to play as against tougher monsters. One of the best RPG demos I've seen, no question.
James
Thanks.
Thanks, this should be a nice introduction to the DQ series, and the keychain could come in handy.
Shut yo mouf. Those look as awesome as the ones I buy at Otakon, only cheaper, 'cause they're FREE.Quote:

Chux, nope, didn't play them. I didn't get into RPGs until about '93 or so.
That's not a bad time to get into them. I just have fond memories of staying up all night during summer vacations, or weekends playing my ass off.
Yet another reason to revoke his reviewer license.Quote:

That's not a dig at Jeremy on a personal level. It's a fact. People who have not even played one of the Top 10 most famous series out there have no business reviewing games, no matter how well they write. They lack perspective.Quote:

Actually, Jeremy... You only missed DW4 and 7, unless you like playing rpg's in Japanese, and those two only good if you're really into old-style Japanese rpg's. 1-3 are worth playing, but only if you like to hurt yourself. (coming from someone who like DW 3)
Hey, Square's SaGa series is another big series from Japan. I'm sure not many people would recommend that anyone here play it. (coming from a person who LOVES the SaGa series)
Dragon Warrior was the sauce, man, don't front.
It's true, and you could get it for FREE with sub to Nintendo Power.
LoL That's how I got my copy actually.Quote:

The one that came with the mini-strat too right? That booklet was actually pretty nice.Quote:

I'm actually not a big fan, but it is one of the Top 10 most important series in gaming, unlike your wrasslin' trash. Part of being a journalist (if I used that word any more loosely, it'd be your mom) is having proper perspective. You don't have it if you haven't played the most influential games. Do you want a person reviewing movies who has never seen Clockwork Orange?Quote:

Yeah, they were expensive as hell when they came out. I got mine from Video Game Exchange.
Citizen Kane? Gone With the Wind? Yojimbo? Un Chien Andalou? 2001? I don't trust a reviewer who hasn't seen these.Quote:

That said, Dragon Warrior is more of a Gone With the Wind. :p
The chapter in 4 where you play as Taloon and have to run the item shop is still the best part of any RPG ever.Quote:

Agreed on all accounts.
That really has little to do with critiquing a game or movie. I have never played any DQ Game (nor any FF pre 7) and that didn't hinder me in any way when reviewing games. It's nice to have perspective but it is not a pre-requisite to editorial competency (save for the instinces of immediate preceeding games).Quote:

Was that really necessary? And AGAIN with the wrestling bashing. Christ dude, move the fuck on. Some of those games you bash (without playing, I'd wager) have won fighting game awards (the N64 Aki ones come to mind), while others (like the Fire Pro series) are held in high regard by fans across the world, and by many in gaming and wrestling.Quote:

Good deal, thanks for the heads up :)
Awesome, thanks for that link. I already have a PlatKing (the one in the upper-left corner in the pic on the site), so if they send me that one, I'll give it to someone else.
has anyone here heard the music/bought the soundtrack for this game yet?
And Titanic made hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide. That doesn't mean it doesn't suck. Stop using public opinion to defend your taste. The average idiot has even shittier taste than you do.Quote:

Yoshi, just give it a rest. Seriously. You're coming off like an incredible asshole with all this. Why should I stop using public opinion to defend my points? They're perfectly valid statements, and are leagues better than your age-old flames.
Flattery will get you nowhere.Quote:

It doesn't suck. A mediocre script is its only failing, as everything else came together wonderfully. Yes, even the acting, which made the best of an admittedly bad starting point. And from a technical perspective (direction, editing, set design, etc.) the movie is among the absolute best. Hell, I don't even like the film and I recognize it does some things amazingly well.Quote:

I guess it did have DiCaprio's impression of an ice cube going for it.
DiCaprio's acting is one of the best aspects of the movie, especially considering what he was given. Read the script (Cameron's worst by a huge margin) and you'll see that Jack was barely a character in the first place. No characterization at all. Joe Blow pins this on DiCaprio because most people don't know any better, but most people who actually know something about acting are aware that he did a fantastic job of making something out of nothing.
For comparison: Ewan McGregor isn't a shitty, wooden actor, but he can only do so much when presented with a shitty, wooden script and an apathetic director.
For comparison Star Wars Episodes I-III all kicked the fuck of out of Titanic. James Cameron should have been shot right after T2. Talk about jumping the shark.Quote:

Well, that's not fair. Pro wrestling probably has better acting and a less convoluted story arc than Episode 2.
Edit: I'm not rushing to his defense because I care about his feelings, it's just annoying to see this shit every single time I open a thread. It's like a car alarm going off at two in the morning. You want it to shut off, but not because you care about the owner and the security of his car. It's just fucking annoying.
Ok, everyone can now shut the fuck up about anything not related to Dragon Quest or the keychain. Yoshi gets a week off and Jeremy is really close, so my advise to everyone else is to keep it civil.
Fair enough.
And YAY KEYCHAIN. I'll never use it, but I don't care. It's a spiffy collectable thingy.
The system worked with this situation, very good to see. I rather like the look of the keychain. Sure, it's too bulky to use, but it could make for a nice little paperweight.

hope he doesn't throw that shit out.
again, has anyone heard the music/bought the sountrack yet? how is it compared to the other games?
Thanks guys...just sent for mine. :link:
;_; i'll miss Yoshi. i like Yoshi and Jeremy. That they always fight is like how verbal and Riisuke... *wahhh...*
rama- Would dog$ know? He was all over 7. I'm sure it'll be similar to the last 7 games, unless i missed one that was dramatically different. If all else fails, i'll tell you in 2-4 weeks.
I know you have a thing for old games, but someone does not need to have played Pac-Man or SMB to review games today, no more than someone needs to have played Pole Position to review GT4.Quote:

I think overall 6 and 7 have better 'tracks on a whole but 8 still has a few standout pieces, and the orchestrated versions once again make everything magically better. There's certain dc++ hubs and other places you can go to find them.Quote:

There are some rumors of US DQ8 using the orchestrated versions of the songs but I haven't heard much of it and I would be very surprised if it did indeed happen.
dog$, thank you for the info. i was planning on ordering the original/arranged soundtrack sooner or later but i just wanted some comparisons to all the other games. i didn't like 6's soundtrack as much as i liked 4's. 5's was pretty good and 3's remake ost is a good one as well. actually, 3's remake had the dungeon depth change thing, too. i can't remember that happening in the 1st game, though.
Revoltor, nice way to get around Kano's edict. Would you like me to send you mine? Or should I just shorten the process and send you some piano wire? Here's a Q&A on the game that might be helpful -

Apparently, if you pre-order DQ VIII at Canadian EBs, you get the demo right then. The cover for it looks nice.
well i got an invite to be a "slime knight" after trying the first time and having registration closed. try dumb stuff to win free shit i guess is the point.
