You lucky bastard, you.
As a gamer I appreciate it and I think I even like everything except the posters on the roof (I don't like gaming posters as a rule of thumbs). As someone in the design industry I will require new retina's.
What the hell do you do for a living? My dream is to open up a video game museum and it looks like you have one already.
That's definitely one of the best collections I've seen. Kudos.
What's that black box with the Playstation logo?
It's pictured with the PS1 games.
Damn, that is impressive. :) If my woman ever bugs me about having too many games and systems I'll just show her those pics.

She--ut! That's a lotta games.
I think I just had a nerdgazm... yep, now everything is all sticky.
Man, that's what I was gonna ask. Favorite part of the room, hands down. It looks so angry.Quote:

I give it 2 days before beer cans and spilled popcorn is embedded into the futon.
I used to buy stuff like crazy, too. Then i just felt my life was empty and i decided i should only use money to improve myself- ppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp BWA HA HA HA HA!
XD Nah, seriously awesome. I respect the collector.

The truly mind-warping thing about that collection is that at least three quarters of those games would fit on one decent sized hard drive.
For that very reason, I doubt there are many gamers out there who still maintain collections of that magnitude.
Of course, I'm sure the satisfaction of completing a collection for any given system is something you can never replicate by downloading a complete romset.Commas are your friends.Quote:

PS: Wow. That is quite a collection. I could never sacrifice TV size for game display space, but you are clearly not kidding around. Good show.
so somebody explain to me whats so different between this and when morphix would post about his elabortae hauls/collecion? granted port probably didnt come across his money like morph did and im sure it took him much longer to acquire but its the same principle, yet people like it here. hmmmmm.
*i liked seeing the NES Challenge cart* :)
I think we are all impressed with seeing it all at once as opposed to hearing about it being aquired. If Morphix creates a shit-hot gameroom with organized sections and a virtual tour like this, we'd be on his balls as well.
I don't post all the shit I pick up (and I buy way too much shit) but I WILL post neat pics of my setup when I organize it in an interesting way.
I think a lot of these collectors really need to get together and create something like this. A building housing and displaying every form of videogame media ever created. Otherwise it's just a waste (and a fucking eyesore at that)Quote:

very impressive...but,
a) remove the posters
b) remove all the advertisment cardbords and you will have more space, specially here...

Holy shit, I posted this last night, meandered around, and went to sleep. Didn't think it would get this kind of reaction. Thanks for the compliments... we're both really proud of what we did. It was worth the effort.
I'll reply to everyone in turn...
@Daitokuji: I work in a lab for a food ingredient company in NJ. The money is good for my age, and gets me by. I'm no morphix, believe me.
@kedawa: That is a storage case for PS1 games. The front slides out. She uses it to store her import PS games, she has about 15 or so.
@Videodrone: When I made that directory 4 years ago+, I thought it would be a neat kicker. While I do have some credit card debt, it's been about 3-4 years since I used a credit card to pay for anything game related. Hell, I've pretty much stopped using them, except when I need to charge hotel stays and what not. (Hotel policy for debit cards suck ass, btw) They are the devil, but when I started collecting in college, and was a dumber kid, they were an outlet to fuel the new fire in me.
@nearly everyone: One day I came home, and my GF had it sitting there for me with a bow on its head. It is indeed awesome, and one of the best gifts I've ever gotten. I don't know where she got it, but J-list probably would be a good start if the link Chao doesn't work. To go with the Goomba, there is a Toad plush as well of the same size.
@Michael: I started in 1999 in college, I discovered eBay. I started with a SMS with 10 games. Then I got the big ass Super Mario Bros 2 mug seen on the bookcase. Then I realized Funcoland was selling my beloved NES games for dirt, dirt cheap. It then spiraled out of control from there, half through finding stuff in the wild, half through browsing eBay. At first it was just NES. Then I got all those. Then Genesis was and still is cheap, so I got the games I wanted... and then the rest of the collection seemed easy to get, so I did. Then I just started grabbing everything cheap in sight.
@a few people: As per the description on one of the pics, the size of the TV was limited. I wanted a 36", at least. But there was no room. I knew I had to respect the rest of the room by getting a good TV, so I researched and it came down to a 24" CRT or a 26" LCD, either way I had to have component-ins. If you saw my last TV from the old pics, it was a shit 27" APEX that I'm not even sure had SVideo (it cost $100 new). So I had to go nice.
Being as I could not afford a LCD, I went with the CRT. It is a really nice TV, for not being LCD, big, or HD. Very crisp picture. In the future, I'll upgrade to a LCD HD for sure, as well as a good sound system, but for now, this will do.
@Master of 7s: I do it because I love games. I could take that money and save like one of my friends does. But what does he have to show for it? He'll have a juicy downpayment on a house, for sure, but what does he put in the house? We rent for the time being, and we will buy, just some things which will remain nameless on a public board have to happen first, not to mention I don't trust the housing market right now, especially in overbloating northern NJ... but the point is, I have something to show for it, that I love, can share with my GF, and so on. Not to say what my friend is doing is even remotely stupid, but how I feel is that I want my money spent to show something. In the end, both me and my friend will have mortgage payments for a long time, so ... yeah.
I know I can't take it with me, but I can enjoy it while I have it. In some ways, it's also an investment (take the Nintendo Championship cart, and check completed auctions on eBay for 'nes', and you'll see it just doubled in value). And it's an investment and a collection I can enjoy. I mean, I know I won't get much enjoyment out of some games that just flat out suck, but collecting in itself is a hobby. There is a lot to know, a lot to look for. That was fun too!
@Master: Consider it done. Juiceambi will move one shelf up. :)
@Dragonmaster Dyne: Keep in mind, my average cost per Genesis game is about $3 each. Buying in bulk, scoring cheap games. I'm not paying $20 per thing in my collection, not even close. Aside from the CC debt part of it (which I'm working towards paying off), I paid my own earned cash for my collection. No inheritance here. I guess that's it?
@Revolter: The CGE expo (http://www.cgexpo.com) has a museum with tons of rare and one of kind items. It's as close as you're going to get to one for now. Sadly, they're taking next year off, so you'll have to wait until 2007 to see it again.
Everything is insured fully, and we have a good burglar/fire alarm system. We're too paranoid!
@marwan: The posters are up there because we just had nowhere else to put them. I was in charge of putting them up, and the general concensus from my Gf and our friends is that the spacing was just right. Didn't want to make things too cluttered.
We may need to take all that display stuff off the top, but it was the best place for a mass amount of it. She worked in a Funco for 5 years, I worked and grubbed off of one for the same time (Thank Shin johnpv for that!). We still have 3 boxes of promo and display stuff we couldn't fit. We had to display some of it!
@arjue: While working on the gameroom, we haven't had too much playtime. Now that it's done, it's been getting use. We Love Katamari was the first game I played in there. Once I get a wireless bridge, she'll probably take some time up there to play FFXI. As far as the games, I plan to attack my gaming backlog fully once I finish We <3 and Ninja Gaiden Black, starting with some of the NES games I never got to.

I found it to be very ammusing, cause I understand what you mean all to well. Totally know what you mean about the whole college thing. Took me 2-3 years to kick that, but now I have a wife to keep me in line. ;) Good man, not using them anymore.

To be honest, a 24 inch toshiba is probably the best bet for most of that collection if he can't go RGB. New generation TVs butcher old games and the Sony non-HDTV at 24 inches is a POS, it has a built it tube warp problem, I went through 3 of them and ended up with one that is still no good...
Nice collection, I for one prefer more open design styles for my game room, but it's all preference and it's cool to see you building something you love
That is a good idea on controllers, another good idea is one of the 3 shelf rubbermaid cases. I use that and it works great.
ssb
I've had to move too many times in the last 2 years to ever consider being a collector again. I can respect this room though... Looks good. Get a bigger CRT TV... the tech isn't there for flat screen yet.
Please do. You have a cool room w/ potential. And you have the bling bling .Quote:

Truth. I had an arcade cab back when I was renting an apartment and it SUCKED hauling it every time I moved. Now that we own a house I've gotten some bigger items but still don't have any cabs.Quote:

Actually both Portnoyd and myself put together and determine prices/rarity (depending on market conditions and other criteria) for the SNES and NES sections of the Digital Press collectors guide. Meaning we are the authors of those sections
Collections like these dont happen overnight, its not like a Morphix who could go buy the entire room just for the hell of it and then be done with it the next day. Its about the hobby and consistently growing over time. You really have to care about what you are doing for a sustained period of time, not just an overnight fling.
You dont have to have lots of money all at once, or even over time as long as you collect smart, same goes for anything
BTW Port, nice wall shelves, wonder where Ive seen those before ;)

The excuses for the TV being small aren't valid. No room? Then sell some of that crap, and you'll have the room and the money.
I have a TV that size, but I don't have people over to play games together on it.
Gaming insurance eh, so do you pay a monthly fee etc or yearly?Quote:

We've come to grips with losing part of our security deposit. It may happen, but we'll do our best to spackle and repair the assload of screw holes we made.
@Josh: I know I'll never make huge profit with game collecting. It's possible, but you have to be ultra aggressive, and never get attached to anything. Too late for me. :) All I'm saying, if I am ever in dire need of funds, I have this stuff to fall back on.
And please don't tempt me with new stuff. :) Those cabs were bad enough, don't tempt with potential new stuff for the room!
We have some cabs in the basement, but I have yet to upload the picture because the room isn't finished yet. Oh well.
@D_N_G: Enormis. DNG's collection is just as impressive as well. The DP guide was fun, even though people loved to bitch about our determinations.
@Fighter-X, zerohero: It falls under renter's insurance. When I went to set the account up, I sat down with the agent and went all over this. She now has our excel collection lists as well as about 40 pictures to back us up. I will, however, decline to say how much I'm insured for. As DNG stated, I know how much everything is worth, ballpark, so the amount covers it fully.
What are you gonna do when you have kids!?
Coat hanger.
Suicide?
Oh, that's absolutely fine. I just forgot to include the "obligatory don't-have-to-tell-the-amount-because-it's-none-of-our-business" disclaimer.

Right now my kid is only 3, he loves stuff like Lego Star Wars and Scooby Doo games on the newer systems. But in playing the NES and the older games, the games are easier to control (part of it being controller sizes for smaller hands compared to a PS2 or Gamecube controller), easier to learn, and the most of all (part of being a parent) the violence and connotations are extremely tame in todays standards compared to newer consoles libraries.
That's alot of stuff. This is a sight to behold.

Seriously, 24 inches is plenty big. CRTs that size are the best. My 25 inch Sony RGB cannot be touched by anything bigger. Heck I play most of my games on a 13 inch Commodore. Who gives a f%^&, his TV is fine.
Question: I notice your gameroom is made to showcase most of your collection but alot of it seems innacessible because of figures in front and stuff like that. Do you actually play the NES and Genesis stuff often? I like the room, but I don't know if I could work with one like that cause my stuff wouldn't be as accessible...
I would probably vertically stack alot of the Genesis stuff to make more room, but I guess that can be bad for the cartridges, no? I heard CDs, etc should be kept horizontal for long term storage...
ssb
Just being a total douche.Quote:
