Back in Jr. High a friend and I went to this Nintendo sponsered event that was making its way around the country.
They had NES systems and Gameboy systems, you would pay to get in and have unlimited time with the games well at least unitl they shut the power off and told people to let others try.
I remember playing Wrath of the Black Manta,Journey to Silus and a slew of others pretty fun time.
So does anyone remember something like this in their town?
I dont remember a Nintendo road show, but I remember a Capcom mall booth during the age of the NES. It was a mall in New Jersey- I think the Monmouth Mall...
Anyways, there were NES kiosks around the area featuring Capcom NES games like Bionic Commando, 1943, and such. I remember getting a mambership card of some kind. It had some guy on it called "Captain Commando", but it wasnt the same guy from the game of the same name (i think this was before that hit arcades anyway).

Yes, I remember this event. It happened right around the time Super Mario Bros. 3 came out and The Wizard hit theaters. There were also high score competitions for Tetris, SMB3, and some other games, sort of like in The Wizard.
It was one of the coolest events I had ever attended at the time. Damned if I can remember what it was called.
I believe it was in 1990, they had one in Hartford, CT and they where showing off Super Mario Bros. 3 there with the tournament they where holding (one with Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer and one other game that escapes me). I still have a t-shirt (beaten to hell) and a book from there, it was called the Nintendo PowerFest... I wish Nintendo did cool things like that now :(

Seriously though, Nintendo did more cool shit for their fans while they had a monopoly on the 8-bit market than any company has recently.
Now while I don't exactly think a company now would ever do what Nintendo did now, it is an interesting observation none-the-less.
Yes it's true that Nintendo was great to its fans in the 8-bit era but I always viewed Nintendo's virtual monopoly as bad for the industry. Excellent machines like the Sega 8-bit suffered because of the lack of third-party games. It would have been great to have seen some Konami or Tecmo games on it.
