One melee from the back of the head. So if you come up behind someone and hit them, they are dead. It takes 2-3 depending from the front, and hitting someone is way slower then actually shooting them.

For all of it's dearth of modes and options, I ended up enjoying Prey's deathmatching a ton just because it offered some really creative, balanced, and varied level design that made for some really excellent pacing. Lazy, overdone crap like this isn't going to do it for me, I don't care how robust the matchmaking is.

I won't deny that these affect how the game is played, but it would be a major stretch to call them selling points, either. I've seen these things ripped off in a couple games (Pariah and Warpath, at least... so not even especially good games), but I wouldn't call them major contributions to the genre.

I enjoyed Prey's multiplayer also simply because of the level design. But as far as actual gunplay goes, and weapon selection, Prey was awful. It did have fantastic level design though. (at least in multiplayer, the single player left a lot to be desired IMO).

But they are selling points simply because they vastly change the pacing, strategy, and pretty every aspect of how the game is played. While some people don't like those features, and you may be one of them, they are a reason why Halo is different from other FPS's, and they are the reason why so many people do enjoy the game.

so if you shoot someone in the back of the head once do they die? and if so whats the difference between the front and the back of the head? the shield obviously works on the players back as well and it's not like you're "suprising" the shield. thats my point. the whole head shot system has always been wonky in this series.

How can you say it's wonky if you obviously have not put much time into the game? Just by the questions you are asking I can tell that you haven't really played the game for more then a few games, if that.

A head shot is a head shot, back of the head (which is harder to hit obviously), or front of the head. You shoot someone in the head, you do more damage, simple as that. You melee someone in the back, they die. It's not that complicated actually. The one hit in the back kill melee is a balance in gameplay that works very well, and rewards you for either sneaking up on someone, or figuring how to get behind them with a quick kill.

There was nothing awful about the weapons, but it was certainly a largely oldschool selection of weapons that weren't as cool as they looked. It was a very Quake sort of arsenal. Nothing especially wrong with that, it just doesn't stand out. The pace and feel of the matches made me giddy, though.

Yeah, that was my one problem with the multiplayer. While the layout of the levels were uber fucking cool, the weapons left a lot to be desired. They were the typical fare of mine launchers, plasma goop guns, and rocket thingers (which you're right, looked far more awesome then they actually were). And the multiplayer didn't really hook me for very long simply because it was the same old "shoot to kill, run over health packs" type of gameplay. Playing each level for the first time was pretty damn awesome though, if only to see what type of tricks they used with the gravity.

how can you not say that killing someone by clubbing them in the back of the head once kills them but a much more skilled headshot does not, isn't fucking dumb? it has nothing to do with how many hours i played or wheather i like the games or not. it's just plain unsensical. i know how the games have worked in the past. my questions were geared towards this one.

you want to talk about limp weapon feel, try the original Unreal. my god did those weapons just sound and "feel" crappy. HL2 is about the most perfect game i've come across for weapon "feel". they just nailed it with the sounds and overall effect of them.
