I work retail in a DVD/CD store. It's called HMV. We are a pretty big chain in Canada & the UK.
I don't hate my job, but I always think I could be doing more. I ultimately want to work my way up past manager into some of the bigger head honcho jobs because HMV pays well from Manager up. (Managers can clear like 50k a year with bonus (canadian))
I have to work with customers all day long and I have to do a lot of jobs. Our part timers are basically useless so I have to do pretty much everything by myself.
Last night I worked setting up a new sale until 5am (from 4pm) but I was commended today, since they had nothing to do today. So it's all good.
I just quickly want to get ahead into the manager role so I can make a decent wage and at least be running a store, not working in the crowd.
They like me here and I work hard, so I know I will get promoted soon enough.
I also buy product from suppliers and receive product for the store. Buying is really interesting because you don't want to be over inventory but you don't want to be out of best sellers either. You want to maximize your top sellers and make sure you aren't carrying crap that doesn't sell. Otherwise you are wasting money where you could be making money.
Eventually, maybe I will open my own store. Who knows, if I learn the trades to run a store. Maybe a game store, or a comic shop would be fun to run?
At the end of the day though, I'm not sure I want to be in this field my life. I went to school for web design and multimedia design but that field is over saturated with morons and crappy designers. You just get lost in the crowd applying for a job.
I could get a job with Andrew at his work but I am trying to think about my future.
If in retail I can be making 50k in 2 years when I'm 25, how much would I be making in design? It's a throw up but considering the design field is considered shaky, I think I made the right decision. For now at least.
