Best Buy testing out used game market.

Apparently, Best Buy has seen the light and hopes to try it's hand in the used game market.

I hope this means we start seeing fair used prices, when I walk into EB or Gamestop and see preowned games for 45 bucks as opposed to 50 new, right under the sign that says they give 15 bucks to buy back that game, it makes me want to take their cash register and throw it through the window.

Yeah really. And then there's the whole "store credit only for trade ins" system, like I'm some sort of crackhead at a harlem pawn shop. You're buying the game from me for 12 dollars and selling it for 45, and I don't even get that 12 dollars in real money? Go fuck yourself.

I think now they actually give you a choice at EB, you can get half the trade in value in cash, so you could actually see a five and a one for your 45 dollar game. And people actually do it! How in the hell have they built this culture where people drop 50 bucks on a game and then trade it in for 12 2 weeks later? You could rent that game almost anywhere about 8-10 times for 38 bucks, that's like 2 months with the game instead of 2 weeks, and you'd have 12 bucks of real cash in your pocket instead of funcobucks.

I have never been to an EB or Gamestop that got an adequate number of units of ANYTHING. As far as I know, I still can't get We Love Katamari. I almost didn't get Halo 2 the day it came out, and I preordered months before, simply because I wasn't there at midnight. If a friend of mine wasn't working the register, I would have been out of luck til the next shipment. Plenty of people other than me were.

Infuriating. If they never have anything in stock and they're not going to get enough to cover preorders, let alone any walkins that come along later, why not just order online or go to a store that doesn't take preorders? Chances are about as good of getting it.

I haven't had to preorder a game to get it on it's release date in about 8 years, between Best Buy, Circuit City, Walmart, etc you can always find a copy of just about anything

Except we only have one of those chains and Target within a reasonable distance. GameStop is within walking distance, and BB's stocking of games is pretty unreliable... I just kind of wish I could put the money down and know it's going to be at GS. I might just order games online from now on, if I really need it near launch.

I'd love it. It would force some nice competition for used games. Things like, oh... only selling things in decent shape would be nice to have across the board.

Don't say that! As long as EB is still around, you can get great deals that you don't see anyplace else. I was able to grab breakdown for $9.99 there.

If you want a game that's not a major release, just shop online. If you can't wait three days for the shipped game to arrive, then you should pick up another hobby. I personally think EB is great as long as I never enter one of their B&M stores ever again.

And it helps keep games sitting on the shelf at Best Buy and Circuit City, where the real nice clearance sales come from.

This should be pretty good... a big store like BB should be more likely to get in rares due to a higher volume of customers (and they'll get more of the kind of customers who may not know exactly what they have), and less likely to know to charge a higher rate for them, since games are only a small subsection of their business.

I'm pretty sure Best Buy will have a data base with the proper pricing. It's not like they'll leave it in the hands of the locals. They'll probably use Gamestops pricing, as a comparison to how they'll price it.

I remember one time I decided to take my Sega CD games to a pawn shop, because Funcoland wasn't paying squat for the games. The guy at the pawn shop pulls out a Funcoland price sheet(remember those?) and pays me according to what Funco would pay. I didn't fare any better. :doubt:

Media Play did it years ago... then stopped.. now Best Buy owns them and they started doing it again about a year ago.

Best Buy bought MP & the other Musicland Group stores (Sam Goody, Suncoast) and stripmined their profitable ideas, flooded them with beaurocracy and unneccessary expenses, redirected the businesses away from what worked best for them (remember when Sam Goody specialized in music, rather than being another jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none hole in the wall?), stole their main supply warehouse, then sold them and left them in the gutter about a year later.

When I did this, they had a list of the games they would take. Some were okay in price but others were ridiculously low.

This was back in may 1995 ( I had just bought a Saturn), so Ebay didn't exist and I didn't have internet access at the time. I had actually tried to sell my Sega CD and games at Die Hard Gamer club, but they weren't giving the cash either. I sold my Sega CD for $15 to them though.

God what jerk would value a sega cd for $15? That was mad expensive at the time and I would have gone ballistic if I had to sell for that.

Sega was already clearing out the old Sega CD. You could buy a new one for $99 and a used one for about $45. It was about the same as selling your Genesis.

Seriously, going to the store and getting 12% of the value of the game right now, or waiting a week and getting 50% value of the game is a big-ass difference.

I thought they weren't still together, but when I started working at Circuit City, and I mentioned Media Play they were saying that it was owned by Best Buy and I shouldn't shop there, etc. Of course, I told them I'm still gonna shop where I please.
