Romancing SaGa

Ah, fair enough. I can see that, though it still isn't my style for these kind of RPGs no matter how many times I've played through them (seems to take all the magic out of them for me).

Also, I'm noticing that the bosses are really, really, amazingly tough. Since that's the standard for the series I'm having a hard time figuring out if I'm underleveled, playing badly, or just not meant to be there yet at all. Right now I'm playing as Claudia, and trying to get the fucking Aquamarine. I think you can guess what's annoying me. ;)

Yeah the bosses are really tough. I did get fucking sick of the elemental fetch quests. So i killed Adyllis the earth dragon. Fucker had it comming. I am freaking estatic about the game's freedom of choice when it comes to killing people who piss me off.

Next time I kill Galahad too.

For the couple of people who are playing this, is there really a benefit to tempering? I mean, obviously it makes the weapon stronger, but since they can't be repaired at inns it seems as though they'd be a pain to maintain, and the tempering materials used to keep it going could be sold for a better weapon in the first place. Am I missing anything here?

The posts in this thread have convinced me to purchase this game. I was a HUGE fan of SaGa Frontier and loved it (I'm a major contributor to the big FAQ for the game on GameFAQ's). I wasn't planning to get this after being burned by Unlimited SaGA (sorry Finch, I tried to like it). I wonder if this will be like SaGa Frontier where if you beat all the quests you get to travel to the Developer's Room

Yeah, I've seen a few people who liked SaGa Frontier pass this up due to Unlimited Saga, which is too bad since Unlimited Saga was basically nothing more than a speedbump for the series.

I did my review a little while ago over at Got-next and while I rated it rather low (a 2.5 out of 5) I did note that the battle system was really enjoyable and unique and that RPG fans should check this out for its unique take on the genre. Overall it just didn't have enough to sustain a higher rating, but there is tons of great potential in it and those who said the battle system is lame and unoriginal, like PSM recently, are not giving it enough credit -- it takes the traditional formula and really adds to it with all the unique combos and other abilities.

The problem I have with your review is that it spends most of the time talking about what makes it good, gives a vague "but it's still missed potential" and wraps it up with a 2.5 out of 5. You don't really give any of the negatives beyond saying that there are, in fact, some negatives.

I'm not criticizing it because I like the game, but because I don't really see a connection between the points you raise and the final score. I got a bit of a feeling that you found the plot dull, but that's it.

Played about an hour of this with Hawke last night, I enjoyed being able to attack civilian vessels and steal from them. Good stuff. Not much else to say, all I really did was sail around and fight. The battle system with classes and proficiences looks to be pretty engaging, the graphics are nice (but need 480p) and the soundtrack is great.

As an fyi to anyone else looking to pick this up, I grabbed my copy at EB which had the sticker for $19.99 but it showed up in their computer as $39.99. The guy had to give it to me for the former since that's what I saw but for whatever unknown reason they might be boosting the price back up.

Yeah if I could go back and put more into the negatives I would, you make a valid point. Plot was dull, I couldn't get attached to the characters and I didn't feel much of any continuity. It wasn't an adventure I could really get sucked into, the only good quality was the battle system IMO, the graphics, etc. were all below my expectations. But I appreciate your comments, I'm relatively new to the whole review thing, so I'm learning with each new one I do.

Eh, I agree with your points, but to me they don't really make a difference. The game relies almost entirely on its battle system, going through dungeons, and doing a myriad of side-quests... the main characters and plot aren't given a great deal of focus. That's why I've said before that this game would go over much better with PC RPG fans, because aside from the initial presentation it doesn't really have much to do with console RPGs. It's something a Wizardry, Bard's Tale (old ones, not the new one) or Icewind Dale fan could get into more than a Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest fan could (at least that's been what I've seen), but it's still judged by the standards of the latter rather than the former due to the look, the company that developed it and the system it came out on.
