Self Heating Coffee

It isn't new, but it's new to me. Self heating coffee.

Apparently it was developed for 10 years and cost $24 million. If you ask me, that's a whole lot of money invested into trying to make coffee hot. How it works is it has an outer layer of plastic containing calcium oxide, that when mixed with the "puck" has as an exothermic reaction. The heating happens in an outer shell so it doesn't affect flavor.

Basically, it's a great idea. I love that fact that I can go anywhere and have a hot cup of coffee, but the coffee itself doesn't taste all that great. It isn't very strong and it's pretty sweet. When will Dunkin Donuts (or someone who makes equally good coffee) get ahold of the patent?

This is pretty awesome. Now if they could just do it with that soup on the go stuff, I'll be set.

I heard about this a long time ago and I've still never seen a can in person. I tend to get excited over new novelty beverages, and this is probably the most fun one could have with one. Still keeping my eye out for it. Whether the coffee is good or not, I can guarantee you that I will drink this at least once. I could imagine keeping one or two of these on hand when going out in winter would be awesome.

But yeah, I guess it's too much to ask that Wolfgang Puck release a "black Dunkin Donuts" flavor. :(

I don't drink coffee, but I can imagine plenty of other uses for a self-heating container.
I wonder how long it will take before somebody figures out a way to make a bomb out of it.

The thought of having self heating food would be great, but it just seems like that would be another thing to give you cancer :\

This is what I was half expecting to see... but an acutal self-heating can is pretty cool.

Whats next? Self cooling soda?

I bought one of these for the novelty. The actual coffee inside is just plain bad.

I wonder if fat people are still waiting for self-heating Hot Pockets.

The military has this for their MRE's (rations). I never used the 'Heating Option' on mine, just ate the stuff, cold, and salty ,but its out there.

I thought it tasted alright, but yeah the novelty of it is what really gets the attention.

It's a good idea. The application of this should be very interesting. Imagine hot chocolate that stays hot. But what I don't understand is how you don't burn the fuck out of your hand. If it's hot enough to warm up coffee and keep it so, then how doesn't it burn your hand?

I assume it's insulated, but maybe you'll need a fuck load of napkins.

How much does it cost?
