DQ8 is very consistent, content-wise. I'd say that if you're not enjoying yourself now, you won't enjoy the rest of the game either.

p.s. It's not that I feel the main character has to talk - after all, a few of my favorite RPGs have silent heroes (both of the Chrono games, for instance) - but for whatever reason it feels really terrible in here.

Most of that is how I felt when I played the demo, so no Dairy Queen 8 for me.

Yeah,it really does play like an older Dragon Warrior game, difficulty and all. As pretty as it is, I'm not so sure its going to sway anyone who wasnt a fan of the original series. I like it, but just like Dragon Warrior 7 ,its a game that I'm going to have to be in a certain mood to play. The interaction between the characters and the beautiful graphics kind of help to spur me on to see more in this game though compared to the previous installments.

Meh, MechDeus invariably turns his nose up at most high calibur games. I don't see why anyone would consider it a deal breaker.

mechdeus - i don't see how you can compare this to dragon quest 1. i mean...there was absolutely NOTHING going on in that game. you were alone with no one to talk to and no back story and...just a bunch of nothing. i tried playing the gbc one and couldn't do it 'cause i couldn't see a point to it really. i just got past the sad castle and decided to take a break from it yesterday. i might play some more during the week and definately over thanksgiving weekend...but i'm still loving it.

Like Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, F.E.A.R., WoW, SOTC, Max Payne, Metroid Prime, Burnout, Street Fighter, MGS, etc.?

I'll plow through a glitchy, broken mess if I'm enjoying the story and characters (*glares at Xenosaga II*) and I'll keep playing a half-assed attempt at writing if the gameplay is fun (FFVIII x2), but DQVIII doesn't do anything better then anyone else. It does a lot of stuff good but there's nothing to compel me to keep playing, it's the same game with the same situation design as a hundred other RPGs I've already played (a lot of which copied off this series, but even just in terms of itself I can't of any series that has evolved this little in that kind of timeframe). I wanted to play DWVII because I thought it had an interesting premise and I liked the sound of the job system but it seems like this game took a few steps backwards.

Oh well, I still have Magna Carta and DDS to finish up anyway.

To an extent. Dragon Quest 8 also has *by far* the best presentaion of any game in the series. This goes beyond music and character design too.. The new true 3D camera system adds a lot to the overworld, to say nothing of the excellent dungeons.

I was never really a Dragon Quest fan until now.

More like Resident Evil 4, God of War, HALO 2, GTA: San Andreas, etc.

Hmm, well guess I was wrong then. Maybe that's all this series needed was a little bit of shine and gloss to make it more noticeable to the American audience,and more of a joy to watch and play. Either way I'm glad Hori handed over the reigns to Level-5, they've created a gorgeous world for the series that I always hoped someone would pull off at some point in time.
